Alcohol Policy Introduction

Alcohol Policy Overview

The alcohol policy that is in effect today at St. Lawrence University has been developed over the years by committees comprised of students, faculty, and administrators. It is a multifaceted policy that includes requirements based on the law, the legal obligations of individuals and the University, the quality of of residential life on campus, and the aims and objections of the University.

Providing Food at Events with Alcohol Present

Providing food at an event with alcohol present

As stated in the University's alcohol policy in the 2010-2011 Student Handbook, "Reasonable amounts of solid food and non-alcoholic beverages must be available [at events]." (p.45). This policy is in effect in order to follow the New York State Alcohol Board policy that food should be available to 'customers', or in this case attendees of the event, for consumption.

Starting a Club/Organization

How do I start a new club/organization?

To start a club, simply collect the names of those interested in being active in your new club and a faculty or staff advisor and fill out the online Club/Organization registration form. This makes the club contact information available online for current and prospective students to see in the Student Club/Organization directory. You will not receive money from SLUSAF by filling out this form.

When to Register an Event

Do I need to fill out an event registration form?

Ask yourself these questions:

Will there be alcohol at my event? (BYOB)

If yes, you need to fill out an Alcohol Event Registration Form – available at the Information Desk – and give to Amy Calapa, Assistant Director, Student Activities & Leadership.

SLUSAF

What is SLUSAF?

The St. Lawrence University Student Activities Fund. This fee, set by the Thelomathesian Society, is paid by all undergraduate students and managed by the SLUSAF Central Treasurer, the SLUSAF Assistant Treasurer.

Club vs. Organization

What’s the difference between a Club and Organization?

A club is a group of SLU students with a common interest that has registered their group with the student activities office. Registration means that your organizations leaders will get formal invitations to programming opportunities. It’s also the first step to becoming a Student Organization.

Food at Events

Do I really have to use Dining Services to cater my event?

Yes. There is a catering policy on campus that requires all University groups to go through Dining Services for any catering/food at University events. Visit the link above to read more about this specific policy.
