Caroline Duda ’07 followed her tour guide’s
footsteps…to a leadership position.
Caroline has always been
interested in English—especially writing. When
she visited St. Lawrence the summer before her senior year of high school, Caroline
spent much of her time talking with her tour guide, Jackie Roy ’04, about
The Hill News, St. Lawrence’s student-run newspaper. Jackie encouraged
Caroline, who had been involved in her high school’s (Corning Painted Post
West, in NY) newspaper, to become a part of The Hill News staff. When Caroline
arrived on campus in fall 2003, Jackie, who was the editor-in-chief at the time, helped
her get involved with the newspaper right away.
An English major and a Gender Studies minor, Caroline
has worked for The Hill News as a writer and an editor since her first
semester at St. Lawrence and is now the editor-in-chief herself. “Being
a part of the newspaper immerses you in campus life,” she
says. “You may not be involved in everything at St. Lawrence,
but working for The Hill News allows you to explore a little bit of
everything.”
Caroline has also found time to reach out and help children
in the North Country by participating in
St. Lawrence’s SLU Buddies Program, as well as the Reading
and Math Tutor Program and Liberty Partnership. “I’ve
always really liked reading and writing, so I wanted to work with
students to give something back in those fields,” she says.
Although she still has a little more time at St. Lawrence, Caroline is
already planning for the future. “I’d like
to go to graduate school, and then hopefully get some kind of
editor’s position, whether it’s for a magazine, a newspaper,
or something else.”
