What Sara Bernier ’08 enjoys most about St. Lawrence is the chance she has to interact with students, faculty, staff and alumni. Sara, a
math and economics combined major from Alpharetta, Ga., first came to St. Lawrence during Family Weekend 2003 and found the people to be friendly and inviting. “
I felt like I’d be part of a community by coming to St. Lawrence,” says the graduate of
While her mother, Kendall Wehrle Bernier ’80, and sister, Meg ’07, tried to convince her to attend, Sara found her own reasons for coming to St. Lawrence. “What made me decide to come was the number of
opportunities for students to get involved,” Sara says. “I knew I wouldn’t be just a number here.”
When Sara arrived in fall 2004, she tried out for and made the
women’s tennis team. She’s now its captain. “As captain, I’ve learned how to be a leader and what it means to be a leader,” she says. “I’ve also learned what it means to work together as a team to reach a common goal.”
Sara was an Orientation Leader in fall 2006. “A lot of my friends had been ‘OLs’ before and encouraged me to do it with them,” she explains. “
I loved being able to help first-year students adapt to college life, and it made me see how essential the
First-Year Program is and how much work goes into it.”
Sara is a student delegate to the Alumni Executive Council. “I went to a mocktail party sponsored by the Council last February and each person I met was so passionate about St. Lawrence; I knew I wanted to be a part of that,” she says.
“I love being able to share my passions about St. Lawrence with others while hearing why they are so passionate about it themselves,” Sara says. “I’ve learned through my work with the
Alumni Council what it means to be an active alum and how important they are to this University and how much they’re willing to help other students.”
