Susan R. Johnson
I have been working as a counselor in the Diana B. Torrey ’82 Health & Counseling Center since 2006. I am a New York State licensed mental health counselor. I received my master’s degree in school counseling from Lynchburg College, and bachelor’s degree in psychology from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, both located in my home state of Virginia. In 2004, I returned to school for an associate’s degree in health sciences. I completed internships in both school and community-based settings, and my professional experiences include working with families of special needs students in grades Pre-K through 12, providing home-based services for court-ordered adolescents, working with adolescents in substance abuse prevention and intervention programs, and coordinating volunteer services for a chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I consider my position at St. Lawrence University to be one of my favorite as I have immensely enjoyed working with the students at SLU. I value their willingness to explore their thoughts and feelings, identify their strengths, and define and work toward their goals. I also appreciate the challenge of helping them to confront aspects of their lives that may be inhibiting them from attaining their goals. The challenge of managing winter in the North Country is not so appreciated. Summers, however, offer terrific weather for my favorite activities of fishing, gardening, fishing, kayaking, and fishing!
