General Information

Jewish students make up approximately 4-6% of the student body. There is no Hillel chapter at St. Lawrence but there is a Hillel affiliate at Clarkson University in Potsdam, about 10 miles away. Congregation Beth El (also in Potsdam) has Sabbath services almost weekly and during the High Holy Days students and faculty attend services there.

On campus there is a Jewish Student Union as well as a group of faculty who act as Jewish Advisors and assist with programs related to Jewish life on campus.

Over the course of an academic year we offer a variety of programs celebrating Jewish life. These campus-wide events are open to all and include: a Bagel Brunch during Family Weekend, a Chanukah party with latkes, a Tu B’Shevat seder, the reading of the Megillah at Purim, enjoyed while eating hamentaschen and a Passover seder, a high point of our year.

Funding for these events comes from the Chaplain’s budget as St. Lawrence has a commitment to support activities for all religions.

Joan Larsen, our Coordinator of Jewish Life, is happy to answer any questions and provide other information. Her e-mail address is jlarsen@stlawu.edu
