The Diana B. Torrey '82 Health and Counseling Center has seen a significant number of students with gastrointestinal upset this week, including a small number of severe cases. St. Lawrence County Health Department staff are reporting similar cases at nursing homes and public schools. We will continue to monitor the situation, work with county health officials, and report updates as they are available.
Most gastrointestinal upsets are caused by Norovirus infection, sometimes called viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning and calicivirus. It is mistakenly called "stomach flu," and is preventable with good hygiene practice, especially frequent and thorough hand-washing. The most important action, if you have a Norovirus infection, is to rest and keep hydrated.
More information is available through this Department of Health Fact Sheet.
