Weapons Policy
The New York State Legislature adopted the following legislation regarding
firearms on campus:
Section 265.01(3): “Any person who knowingly has in his
possession a rifle, shotgun or firearm in or upon a building or the grounds,
used for educational purposes, of any school, college or university without the
written authorization of such educational institution, is guilty of a Class A
Misdemeanor, and is guilty of a Class D Felony if he has previously been convicted
of any crime.”
Section 265.06: “It shall be unlawful for any person age sixteen
or older to knowingly possess any air-gun, spring-gun or other instrument or
weapon in which the propelling force is a spring, air, piston or co2 cartridge
in or upon a building or grounds, used for educational purposes, of any school,
college or university, without the written authorization of such educational
institution.
In accordance with this law, rifles, shotguns, BB guns,
pellet guns, hunting bows, knives, swords, martial arts weapons, sling
shots, and other weapons, as well as ammunition associated with these
weapons, are prohibited on campus. Unusual or special exceptions
are made only with the permission of the director of security and safety. Violations
result in referral to the Student Judiciary Board, confiscation and possible
loss of item in violation, and may be suspect to arrest in accordance
with Section 265.01(3) or Section 265.06 as described above. |
