Social Function Policy
The primary commitment of St. Lawrence University is to the intellectual
development of each student. This primary commitment is complemented by a recognition
of students as whole persons. Social experience is an integral aspect of the
learning process. Students are expected to act responsibly and are treated
accordingly. Social responsibility requires both tolerance and a willingness
to maintain standards in the best interest of all persons in the University
community.
Restrictions placed upon an individual’s social freedom originate
from a responsibility to insure the rights of others and are based on the premise
that academic commitment at St. Lawrence University retains highest priority. Consequently,
social events must be scheduled to prevent interference with academic pursuits
on either an individual or collective basis.
All social functions at St. Lawrence University must meet the following
criteria:
1. Be in accordance with the
New York State and St. Lawrence University alcohol regulations and
local fire and safety guidelines.
2. Major events, such as dances,
open houses, and concerts must be scheduled one week prior to the event
with the office of Student Activities and Leadership and coordinated
with the Director of Security & Safety. This is primarily
for informational purposes and seeks to prevent the scheduling of two
events that may interfere with each other. In the case of a
conflict between two groups wishing to schedule events, the office
of Student Activities and Leadership will
suggest alternate dates and places.
Any social function held in University residential commons rooms or
lounges must be scheduled with the Residential Coordinator, who must
also be informed of those students responsible. Individual room
parties may also be subject to registration as determined by the residential
coordinator.
3.
In the case of an infringement of an individual student’s rights
or privileges by his or her fellow students, a student should follow
the procedure outlined in the Student Handbook under “Conflict
Resolution.”
