Registration

A.   For Continuing Students:  Registration for semester courses takes place in the preceding semester:  mid-April for Fall courses and mid-November for Spring courses.

B.   Procedures: The student develops an academic program for the next semester, taking into account such matters as previous courses elected, future SLU academic plans, post-SLU education and career plans, University and departmental requirements, prerequisites for particular courses, prerequisites for future courses, and instructor’s permission where permission is required.            The student discusses course choices with a faculty advisor; together they examine prospective course selection in light of what the student has already done or plans for the future.

A student is not permitted to register: (1) if he or she does not have a faculty advisor, (2) if he or she has the appropriate units and has not declared a major, (3) if he or she is on a financial hold or student financial services office hold, or (4) if he or she lacks immunization or health record.

Access to the online registration system is available for all SLU undergraduate students. All undergraduate students must be cleared by their advisor to make registration requests. If a student has two advisors, either advisor may clear the student to register.

Unless otherwise specified for particular courses, priority in registration is: senior majors, junior majors, senior minors, junior minors, seniors, juniors, sophomores, first-year students, other.

C.   First-Year/New Students:  Fall registration for first-year students and transfers takes place during Orientation.  New students are sent the New Student Guide, which includes guidelines for choosing courses and fuller descriptions of courses available to first-year students.

First-year students are asked at registration to choose only from among those courses normally open to first-year students.  (If they believe themselves qualified to take higher-level courses, they are encouraged to discuss the matter with the appropriate instructor or department chairperson.  They may register during drop/add period if space is available.)

A faculty advisor examines first-year student course selections individually to see if the student’s program is consistent with his or her abilities and preparation as demonstrated by high school records and test scores, but also suitable in terms of balance and level of difficulty, and consistent with future plans insofar as they are known.

D.   Transfers:  Because they have already established a college academic record elsewhere, and because these records differ widely in terms of progress toward a degree, specialized preparation, etc., transfer students wil be advised by the Director of Advising during the summer prior to orientation.

E.   Permission of the Instructor:  Students may enroll in a course requiring permission of the instructor only after such permission has been obtained.  (The instructor signs the registration form.)

A student who wishes to enroll in a course for which he or she lacks the prerequisite must obtain permission of the instructor before registering

Note:  Additional information is given in the University Class Schedule.
