Pass/Fail
Within the first 25 class days after the beginning
of fall and spring semesters and eight class days after the beginning of each
summer session, students have the option to select the pass/fail grade option. The
pass/fail option requires written consent of the instructor. Pass/fail encourages
students to explore new areas of study in which they are interested but have
little or no background. It is not offered to justify reduced effort
in the course.
During the four years in college a student is
permitted up to 4 semester course units of work, including SPLS 100,
to be graded pass/fail. The pass/fail option may not be used for courses
in the major and minor fields once the major and minor has been declared. Distribution
and graduation requirement may be satisfied with courses taken with
the pass/fail option. No more than one optional pass/fail option
may be taken in any one semester. Forms are available from the
Registrar’s office. The
pass/fail option requires the written consent of the instructor.
Students
should be aware that transcripts with pass/fail grades may disadvantage
them in application to some graduate schools, or medical and professional
schools. Students should also be aware that although a grade of “P” is
not calculated in the grade point average, a failure is posted as 0.0
and is calculated in the grade point average.
