Course Overload
In the Fall or Spring semester full-time undergraduate
students may take any four courses regardless of their until value, or five or
six courses that total no more than 4.75 units, without additional tuition charges. An
overload consists of five or six courses totaling more than 4.75 units or more
than six courses. During Summerterm, an overload consists of more than
2 units of credit per term.
Eligibility for Course Overload
Students must be full-time. Students must
have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (except as noted in #2 below). Course
overload registration is by petition and is done during the first seven days
of the Fall and Spring semesters. Course overload during Summerterm must
be approved by the Director of Summerterm. See section below for direction
regarding the cost of additional courses. First-year students and transfer students in their first semester at St. Lawrence are not eligible for a course overload.
Course Overload without additional charges
Full-time students with a 3.2 overall or 3.2
prior semester gpa and making normal progress toward their degree, may register
for up to 5.75 units without additional tuition charges during the fall or
spring semesters. See Guidelines for normal academic progress in the
University Catalog.
Once during their undergraduate career, all
students in good academic standing may take one course as an overload,
with no additional tuition charges.
A student who fails to convert all
incomplete (E) grade to final grades by the end of the drop/add period
may not take the fee overload course privilege when other conditions
are met.
Full-time students registered for more than
six courses or for five or six courses totaling more than 4.75 units
and not meeting criteria for a course overload without additional charges will
be changed an overload fee (currently $4,420 per unit).
Example: If
a student is registered for 5 courses with a total unit value of 5
units and does not qualify for exception 1 or 2 above, the student
will be billed an overload charge of $1,105 ($4420*25%).
Students
taking fewer than four courses or 3.0 units will be billed for full
tuition with the following three exceptions:
1. A second semester senior who needs less than four courses (regardless of number of units) to complete his/her academic program will be billed on a per course basis. A petition requesting less than full tuition must be received within five business days of the course drop/add deadline.
2. Employees and dependents
using tuition remission benefits will be billed on a per course unit
basis.
3. Special situations
for billing on a per course basis may be approved by the Vice President
for Finance.
If
a student elects to take fewer than fours courses or 3.0 units their
financial aid my be reduced. The State of New Your will disallow
TAP for students enrolled in less than 3.5 units.
