Incomplete Courses
The Catalog is
authoritative.
There are two kinds of incompletes; one indicated
by “E” and the other by “X”. They have
different purposes.
“E” is awarded when unusual circumstances
such as illness prevent a student from completing work in a course
before the end of the term. “E” is not expected to
be given casually nor should students accept it casually, since it
means that in the new semester they will have an “incomplete” to
finish as well as new courses to contend with.
It is expected that incompletes
will be made up by the sixth (6th) week of the semester. After
that time, the grade reverts to 0.0 (“F”) unless an additional
extension is granted by the dean of academic affairs until the end
of the semester. A request
for extension is made by the faculty member in writing.
The instructor
assigning “E” has the
right, within the limits outlined above, to determine what work is
required and dates by which it must be completed. A letter of
understanding helps to prevent misunderstanding.
“X” is awarded in certain designated
courses. It is a temporary indicator used to show that the work of a course
has not been and was not originally meant to be completed by the end of the semester
in which work was initiated. All students eligible for “X” grades
must be certified by the department and their names sent to the registrar by
mid-term of the initial semester. The work must be completed the following semester
at which time the “X” is replaced by the appropriate grade. A student
must complete work for all “X’s” or “E’s” to
graduate.
