Regular Counseling Center Hours:

After regular clinic hours, students’ medical care is available at
the Canton-Potsdam Hospital After Hours Clinic located in the E.J. Noble Building
in Canton or by the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Emergency Department located in Potsdam.
If
a student experiences a serious illness or injury during hours when
the Health Center is closed, campus security should be called immediately
(229-5555).
The
Counseling Services office is also available at the Center. Students
may call the center for an appointment. After hours, Security will contact a counselor
on call in an emergency.
The health service maintains a limited pharmacy. Students
are billed through the student financial services office for any medications
dispensed at the Health Center. If a required medication is not stocked
at the Health Center pharmacy, a prescription is given for purchase at a local
pharmacy.
The health and counseling
information of persons over age 18 is protected by a variety of state
and federal laws. The Health and Counseling Center staff
encourages students to share their health information with their families but
can not release information to parents, guardians, or other University staff
except in extreme situations. Any concerns regarding the confidentiality
of health and counseling information should be discussed with the health and
counseling center director.
The University recognizes that students will occasionally
have significant medical illnesses or injuries that prevent them from
attending classes or completing assignments or exams. The student is responsible
for contacting the professors and advisor concerning any make-up work, withdrawals,
extensions or incompletes that might be necessary. With the student’s
permission, the Health Service will verify these prolonged absences. The
Health Service does not notify professors and advisors about minor illnesses
(that will resolve within a few days). Students will be expected to contact
their professors directly about these brief days of missed course work.
Verification of medical illness
notes are not given to document visits to the Health Service.
The
health service will store and administer allergy serums for students
who provide the materials and a schedule for their administration from
the prescribing physician.
St. Lawrence University, through Niagara National www.niagaranational.com, representing Markel Insurance Company provides a comprehensive Student Health Insurance Plan, including prescription coverage, for all participating St. Lawrence University students. This policy runs from August 15, 2007 through August 14, 2008 and the cost is $1,350. Specific plan and cost information can be found at www.stlawu.edu/sfs. The health insurance coverage is worldwide and will provide benefits at the University, at home, while traveling or while participating in sports, including Intercollegiate sports. Medical evacuation, repatriation and travel assistance is also provided to all participating students. All students, undergraduate and graduate, are eligible for this plan, and, if needed, dependent coverage can be added.
All full-time students are automatically enrolled in this program. If a student already has equivalent comprehensive coverage, a waiver form must be completed at www.slustudenthealthinsurance.com to eliminate this charge from the student account. More information about the insurance coverage and waiver processing can be found at www.stlawu.edu/sfs.
The New York State Health Department mandates that all entering students show proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella if their birthday is on or after January 1, 1957. They also require that each student be given information related to meningococcal disease and immunization and sign a statement indicating immunization status. A student is not permitted to register for classes if the Health Center does not have these immunization records.
Health and Counseling Services is the primary sources for the treatment of students but it is more than that. Students can make appointments to discuss health and counseling concerns, preventive medicine, exercise programs, etc. Pamphlets are available covering a wide range of health topics. The Health and Counseling Center is committed to providing students with the information and tools necessary for a healthy life.
