Active: A fully initiated member of a sorority or a fraternity.
Alumna/Alumnus: A graduated member of a sorority or a fraternity.
Bid: A formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority.
Chapter: The local group of the larger international/national organization, represented by a special Greek letter name.
College Panhellenic Association: The cooperative campus organization of collegiate members of NPC sororities, commonly referred to as Panhellenic Council or Panhel.
Continuous Open Bidding (COB): Also known as open bidding and informal membership recruitment.
Greek 100: An information session held at the end of the spring semester, particularly geared toward current first-year students who are thinking about Greek life and will be eligible to participate in recruitment as sophomores the following fall.
Greek 101: A required information session for those who wish to go through Greek recruitment. Greek 101 is held prior to recruitment in the fall and spring semesters and is mandatory for anyone who wishes to join a sorority or fraternity. First-year students are not eligible to attend, but may attend Greek 100 at the end of the spring semester.
Greek Council: A student-run leadership and programming body for the fraternities and sororities at St. Lawrence.
Greeks: Sorority or Fraternity members.
Greek Week: A series of events typically held during the spring semester for the St. Lawrence community to celebrate the accomplishments of Greek Life and participate in fun events sponsored by the sororities and fraternities. Past events have included games and a casino night. All events are open to the campus community unless otherwise specified.
Initiation: A ritualistic ceremony where the new member is brought into full membership and receives lifelong membership privileges.
Intentional Single Preference: When a potential new member lists only one sorority or fraternity on his or her preference card.
Legacy: A woman or a man who is the daughter, son, sister, brother or grandchild of an initiate of the same Greek organization.
Local: A sorority or fraternity without any guidance from or affiliation with a national organization.
Membership Recruitment: A designated membership recruitment period during which a series of organized events are held by each chapter. Membership recruitment for sororities is organized by the College Panhellenic Association (Panhel). Fraternity membership recruitment is organized by the co-recruitment chairs of Greek Council.
New Member: A woman or man who has accepted a bid but is not yet initiated.
New Member Education: A period of time between Bid Day and Initiation during which new members are taught the history and rituals of their organization.
Panhel/Panhellenic Council: See College Panhellenic Association.
Potential New Member (PNM): A man or woman who is registered for recruitment and is attending recruitment functions.
Preference Card: A form that potential new members fill out on the final night of recruitment indicating their top choices for membership.
Silence: The period of time at the close of recruitment where there is no communication between potential new members/recruits and sorority members.
Recommendation: A letter signed by an alumnus recommending an individual for membership.
