Saint Facilities, Talent Among the Best

St. Lawrence University's women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams have been among the top programs in New York State for the past several years and will continue to excel with one of the finest collegiate indoor and outdoor track facilities in the nation.

The Merrick-Pinkard track complex (top left) was the host site for the 2003 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and has been the site of New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference Championship meets as well as Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association and Liberty League championship meets. Newell Field House (right), which opened in the fall of 2001, includes an 8-lane 200 meter track and is home for the Saint indoor program. It has also been the site of NYSCTC and UCAA championship meets. Most recently, St. Lawrence hosted the 2007 NYSCTC Championships.

The Saints enjoyed tremendous success on the indoor track in 2007, winning both the Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championship and the ECAC Indoor Championship. The Saints also reached a No. 14 ranking nationally by the NCAA Power Rankings. Saints head coach Mike Howard and his staff were named Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year for the Saints success in 2007.

The Saints have been one of the top teams in New York State for several years and enter their second decade as a varsity team with 15 conference team championships, two New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference titles, and an ECAC Indoor Championship to their credit. They have also had a number of second place finishes both indoors and outdoors in the NYSCTC. The Saints dominated the UCAA on the outdoor track from 1997-2004, winning eight consecutive UCAA Outdoor Championships. The Saints also won seven Indoor Championships in eight years from 1996-2003. Most recently, the team added a 2005 Liberty Leauge Outdoor Championship and a a 2007 Liberty League Indoor Championship. St. Lawrence finished second at the 2007 Liberty League Outdoor Championships in April of 2007.

The Saint women's track and field program has produced five All America athletes representing eight All America performances. Current assistant coach Deb Danehy Lyndaker was the first woman to earn All America honors in cross country and track when she was a cross country All America in 1994. She went on to earn All America in the 1500 in track in 1997, one of four All America performances by the Saints that year. Karen Lamora won the first national championship for a Saint woman in track when she won the 400 hurdles in 1997 and was also All America in the 400 dash. Reili Liiva joined Lamora and Danehy as All America in the heptathlon in 1997 and repeated in 1998. Kate DePuy, a 2003 graduate, was All America in the long jump both indoors and outdoors in 2003. Most recently, freshman Alyssa Pirinelli was named All America in the women's shot put in 2007.
