SKIDMORE SWEEPS SAINTS
Powerful Skidmore College swept the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team in its season opener on Saturday, but Saint coach Jeremy Freeman came away encouraged.

"We played pretty good tennis," said Freeman. "We won't see a lot of teams that strong the rest of the way, and if we play like we played on Saturday, we'll win our share."

Amy Wachenheim of Skidmore beat Stacy Eyth at first singles 6-1, 6-2, Heather Wood beat SLU's Claire Spollen 6-2, 6-0, Lisa Powers beat Britta Waters of SLU 6-2, 6-0, Lynn Erickesen of Skidmore beat Beth Carr 6-1, 6-1, Dawn Penniston of Skidmore won 6-2, 6-1 against Wendy Glawischnig and Sarah Sharpe of Skidmore beat Abby martin 6-0, 6-0 to complete the singles sweep.

St. Lawrence University's women's tennis team got a taste of competition on Saturday at the Cortland Tournament, but will wait until Friday for real competition. "The format wasn't exactly what we had expected," said first-year tennis coach Jeremy Freeman. "It gave us a chance to hit against some different people, but it was just one set per pairing, so it doesn't count toward individual records." The Saints won most of their sets in both singles and doubles despite some nagging injuries and will officially open the season with Friday and Saturday home matches against Ithaca (4 p.m.) and Skidmore (1 p.m.)
