FINN EARNS LIBERTY LEAGUE'S "ROOKIE OF THE WEEK" AFTER RUN AT ITA's Sept. 24: First year student Stephanie Finn, making her collegiate tennis debut last weekend with the St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team, advanced to the quarterfinals in both the Championship Singles and Doubles draws. Her outstanding efforts have landed her the Liberty League’s “Rookie of the Week” award.
Finn came from behind in her first round singles match against Skidmore’s Caroline Sherman, defeating her opponent 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The Goldens Bridge, NY native quickly disposed on Ithaca’s Devra Reiman 6-3, 6-2 and topped Stevens Tech’s Whitney Bender in a fantastic match, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Though her Championship Singles run ended with a 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 loss to #2 seed Amanda Berg from the College of New Jersey, it was not the only impressive tennis that Finn played. She and junior Teresa Rodriguez also battled to a pair of victories in the Championship Doubles draw before again running into Berg and her partner Stef Haar in the quarterfinals.
Rodriguez had a solid ITA Championship of her own, as the Saints co-captain came from behind to top Samantha Schraeter from William Smith 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 before losing to the #14 seed Dana Bacalla of Stevens Tech 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore Casey Gilman also picked up a first round victory in the Championship Singles draw, as she knocked off New Paltz’s Lindsay Lovinger in style, 6-1, 6-0. She and doubles partner Elizabeth Karam also earned a first round win in the Championship Doubles flight, defeating Union’s Brumberger and Ricci 8-3. However, Gilman would drop her second round singles match to NYU’s Stephanie Tu and the duo dropped their second round doubles match as well.
Sophomore Chelsea Hubble also competed for St. Lawrence at ITA’s, dropping her first round Championship Singles match to Ithaca’s Melanie Cohen, 7-6, 6-1.
The Championship Singles bracket was eventually won by the top-seed, Jackie Shtemberg from the College of New Jersey, without dropping a single set. Shtemberg and her doubles partner Christina Contrafatto also took the Championship Doubles draw.
The Saints will look to carry their momentum from ITA’s over to their first dual-match of the 2007-08 season when they visit North Country rival Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, October 2nd at 4:00pm.
