SAINTS STORM PAST RENSSELAER, 9-0

April 13: The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team stormed past Rensselaer on Sunday in Liberty League action, knocking off the Red Hawks 9-0 in the Newell Field House. With the win, the Saints improve to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

St. Lawrence took a 3-0 lead in the doubles portion of the match, dropping only two games total. The tandem of senior Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell overmatched Rensselaer’s top-seeded duo of Progga Das and Erica Sherman, 8-1. Sophomore Casey Gilman and rookie Stephanie Finn remained unbeaten at No. 2 doubles, defeating Christine Roe and Andrea Dalton by the same score of 8-1.

Rensselaer did not field a No. 3 doubles team, giving St. Lawrence co-captains Teresa Rodriguez and Liz Ronty a default victory.

The Saints were able to expand their lead in singles play, as Finn, Gilman, Rodriguez and Hubbell each won in straight sets. Finn defeated Roe 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, while Gilman beat Sherman 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 slot. Rodriguez and Hubbell earned wins over Dalton and Kimberly Viles in the No. 4 and 5 slots, respectively, 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1,

6-1.

Though Das was able to force a third set against Lannon at the No. 1 singles position, the St. Lawrence veteran won the third set tiebreaker easily, 10-0. Rookie Mackenzie Hall earned the defaulted point at No. 6 singles, giving St. Lawrence the 9-0 victory.

The Scarlet and Brown will be in action again on Wednesday, April 16 when they visit Cortland State. That

dual-match is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm.

GILMAN AND FINN LEAD

SAINTS PAST HERONS, 7-2

April 12: Sophomore Casey Gilman and first year student Stephanie Finn continued to rack up victories this spring, as the duo improved to 8-0 at the No. 2 doubles position and to 12-2 and 15-2 in singles play, respectively, by sweeping their matches against William Smith on Saturday. The duo’s strong play helped the Saints extend their winning streak to four matches with a 7-2 win over the Herons in Geneva, NY.

After William Smith’s No. 1 doubles team of Chelsea Rauck and Shari Damon tamed St. Lawrence’s senior Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell 8-6, it was Gilman and Finn that responded with a victory to even the match by the same margin over Amanda and Melissa Slack.

The Scarlet and Brown then picked up a critical point when co-captains Teresa Rodriguez and Liz Ronty defeated Gaby Berkman and Meredith Levenson 8-6 at the final doubles slot to give the visitors a 2-1 lead heading to singles play.

“Casey (Gilman) and Stephanie (Finn) have been playing very solid tennis this spring, and they’ve come up with some crucial victories when we needed them most,” said Saints head coach Jeremy Freeman. “After we took a

2-1 lead in doubles, the momentum was on our side and we showed our depth in singles.”

The depth that Coach Freeman was referring to came in the No. 2 through No. 6 positions, as the Saints racked up five points in singles play to lock up a 7-2 victory.

Finn was able to fend off Amanda Slack 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 at the No. 2 position, while Gilman beat Damon in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Rodriguez and Hubbell added straight set wins at the No. 4 and 5 slots, respectively, over Melissa Slack and Berkman, and rookie Mackenzie Hall came from behind to tip Levenson 3-6, 7-5, 10-6.

William Smith’s lone point in singles play came from Rauck, who earned a sweep in her matches with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lannon at the No. 1 spot.

The win moves St. Lawrence to 8-2 this season and 1-0 in Liberty League play, while the Herons fall to 6-5 (1-2). The Saints will look for a weekend sweep when the welcome Rensselaer to the Newell Field House tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 at 11:00am.
