SAINTS FINISH 2007-2008 RANKED 17th IN NORTHEAST REGION June 6: The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team, which qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season, finished the 2008 campaign ranked 17th in the Northeast Region of the ITA.
FINN NAMED CONFERENCE'S “CO-ROOKIE OF THE YEAR”; GILMAN AND HUBBELL HONORED May 6: First year student Stephanie Finn has been named the 2008 Liberty League “Co-Rookie of the Year” for her efforts this season. The Goldens Bridge, NY native was also a First Team All-Conference selection, while sophomores Casey Gilman and Chelsea Hubbell were also honored by the conference.
Finn made an immediate impact in her rookie campaign, finishing with a 22-2 overall singles record. She was 17-0 in singles play within dual matches and 14-2 in doubles competition. Finn also received the Liberty League Rookie of the Week award four times and Performer of the Week honors once.
“Stephanie (Finn) was certainly a key asset for us this season, as she played through injury several times to earn wins in both singles and doubles,” said Saints’ head coach Jeremy Freeman. “She’s very deserving of this award and we’re excited for her bright future.”
Finn shared the award with Skidmore’s Rachel Loeb, who was a five-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week selection and played at the No. 1 singles and doubles spot for the Thoroughbreds this season. Both players earned First Team All-Conference singles honors along with Vassar’s Courtney Burks, Elysa Kliman and Nicole Pontee, Skidmore’s Dani Fancher and William Smith’s Chelsea Rauck.
Meanwhile, Gilman and Hubbell earned Honorable Mention Singles honors after solid seasons at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions. Gilman racked up a 17-5 singles record this season, including a 12-2 mark at the No. 3 singles spot. The Gloucester, MA native earned Liberty League Performer of the Week honors twice this season. Hubbell added depth and skill to the Saints’ line-up, finishing with an 8-2 singles record at the No. 5 position. The Montclair, NJ native's overall mark landed at 15-10.
Finn and Gilman, who teamed up primarily at the No. 2 doubles position for the Saints this season, also received Honorable Mention for doubles. The pairing proved to be St. Lawrence's most effective this season, finishing 15-3 overall. The duo racked up a very impressive 15-2 record at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Vassar’s Pontee was selected the Liberty League’s “Player of the Year,” while the Brewers’ head coach Kathy Campbell and her staff were named the conference’s “Coaching Staff of the Year.”
WILLIAMS ENDS SAINTS’ RUN IN 2008 NCAA TOURNAMENT May 3: The St. Lawrence University’s women’s tennis team’s run in the 2008 NCAA Tournament came to an end on Saturday morning, as the Saints fell 5-0 to national-powerhouse Williams in Williamstown, MA. The Ephs, ranked second in the country, swept the doubles matches and cruised into the Round of 16 while the Scarlet and Brown finish the season with an impressive 15-5 record.
Williams (17-3) used a thorough doubles performance to grab a comfortable 3-0 advantage early in the match. Cary Gibson and Annie Schneidman overmatched senior Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell 8-1 at the top doubles spot, while rookie Stephanie Finn and sophomore Casey Gilman dropped only their second No. 2 doubles match of the season to Allie Rottkamp and Grace Baljon, 8-2.
The Ephs made it a clean sweep when Nikki Reich and Annie Hancock took care of business against St. Lawrence’s No. 3 doubles team, co-captains Liz Ronty and Teresa Rodriguez, 8-3.
Reich would prove to be key in the match for the host team, as she came through with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hubbell at the No. 4 singles match to pull Williams to within one point of victory. The match ended at a 5-0 decision when Gilman, playing at No. 2 singles with Finn forced to sit due to injury, dropped a 6-2, 6-0 showdown to Baljon.
“Williams is one of the premier programs in the country, and they have a very good chance at contending for the national title, but I’m proud of the season that we’ve had all that the ladies accomplished,” said St. Lawrence University head coach Jeremy Freeman.
Lannon, playing in her final match for the Scarlet and Brown, was behind Gibson 7-5, 2-2 at No. 1 singles when the match came to a decision. William’s Ashley Parsons also led Rodriguez 6-2, 3-2 at No. 3 and Rottkamp was up in the opening game against rookie Mackenzie Hall at No. 5. The No. 6 singles match between Paige Cohen and Hancock never took to the court.
This was the second straight season that St. Lawrence earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament, won an opening round game but lost in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Williams will take on either Wellesley University or Tufts University tomorrow.
SAINTS ADVANCE TO NCAA TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND WITH WIN OVER NEW PALTZ WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – St. Lawrence University head coach Jeremy Freeman knew that today's match in the NCAA’s would be much tougher than when his Saints met SUNY New Paltz at St. Lawrence at the end of March, especially with his number two singles player Stephanie Finn limited to just doubles play.
Although St. Lawrence prevailed in the regular season match up 8-1, the tournament atmosphere had the chance to change things, or so Freeman thought. "We expected New Paltz to be a little stronger than they were in March and with Stephanie [Finn] limited to just doubles play we knew we needed some players to step up," said Freeman.
Step up is exactly what the Saints did as they swept doubles play and won two singles matches to record the final margin of 5-0. In NCAA Tournament play matches are only played until determination (when a team reaches five wins).
The closest doubles match was at number one where Kirsten Lannon and Chelsea Hubbell of St. Lawrence outlasted Dana Lim and Eri Yamakawa 9-7. Finn and sophomore Casey Gilman won at No. 2 for the Scarlet and Brown, while co-captains Liz Ronty and Teresa Rodriguez made it 3-0 with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles the Saints got victories at number three and four. Rodriguez won at three in straight sets and at four Chelsea Hubbell won in three sets. Two of the singles matches were halted at one set each and St. Lawrence led at number five 4-1. The six singles match never got on the court due to the availability of just four indoor courts.
With the win St. Lawrence improves to 15-4 on the year and SUNY New Paltz closes out the year at 9-9.
St. Lawrence advances to play host Williams tomorrow morning at 9:00 am. "I'm happy with where we are and where we're heading," said Freeman. "We're looking forward to tomorrow's competition against a very successful Williams team."
SAINTS TO FACE NEW PALTZ IN OPENING ROUND OF 2008 NCAA TOURNAMENT April 28: The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Tournament on Monday evening as the Division III Women’s Tennis Committee announced the field for this year’s championship. This is the second straight year the Saints have earned a bid to the National Tournament, as they will take on SUNY New Paltz in the first round at William College on Friday, May 2.
The Saints solidified their berth into this year’s tournament with a tight 5-4 victory over William Smith on Sunday in the Liberty League Tournament’s Third Place match. Other teams from the Liberty League that will be playing in the 2008 NCAA Tournament include Vassar and Skidmore.
“I’m very proud of the way the ladies handled this season, as we’ve reached one of our goals by qualifying for the NCAA Championships,” said Saints’ head coach Jeremy Freeman. “We’ve battled through injuries, had ups and downs, and I’m looking forward to our opening match against New Paltz on Friday.”
St. Lawrence (12-3) faced New Paltz (8-2) earlier this spring on March 30, handing the Hawks an 8-1 defeat in the Newell Field House. The winner of the opening round match between the two teams will earn a date with nationally-seeded No. 3 Williams on Saturday, May 3.

GILMAN AND FINN LIFT NO. 17 SAINTS TO CRUCIAL 5-4 WIN OVER NO. 22 HERONS April 27: The No. 17 St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team picked up a crucial 5-4 victory over No. 22 William Smith on Sunday in the 2008 Liberty League Third Place match in Geneva, NY. Sophomore Casey Gilman and first year student Stephanie Finn each won twice, helping the Saints earn a win that puts them in position to earn an NCAA Championship bid.
St. Lawrence (14-4) jumped out to a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match against the hosting Herons (11-7). Senior Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell handed William Smith’s Chelsea Rauck and Shari Damon an 8-5 loss, while Gilman and Finn were simply too much for Amanda and Melissa Slack at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-0.
In what proved to be a crucial point, St. Lawrence’s co-captains Teresa Rodriguez and Liz Ronty were able to hold off Erinn Cain and Meredith Levenson at No. 3 doubles 8-5 for a solid 3-0 advantage.
The Herons, who lost a 7-2 contest to the Saints earlier this month, did not go away quietly in the singles portion of the match though. The home team picked up a straight set win at the No. 1 singles spot when Rauck beat Lannon 6-3, 6-1. They then added wins at each of the final three singles matches to pull to within one point of the victory, as Melissa Slack beat Hubbell at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3, Gaby Berkman rallied past Mackenzie Hall 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, and Cain defeated rookie Paige Cohen at No. 6 singles.
With the tables turned, the Saints needed wins from both Finn and Gilman at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Gilman would do her part, turning in a thorough 6-1, 6-1 win over Damon. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Amanda Slack, Finn would battle back to take the second set 7-5.
St. Lawrence was soon able to breathe a sigh of relief as Finn went on to beat Slack in the third set 6-2, improving to 14-0 at No. 2 doubles this season, and giving the Scarlet and Brown a critical 5-4 win.
No. 2 seeded Vassar College won the 2008 Liberty League Championship over Skidmore, 7-2, in the earlier match. The Brewers eliminated the Saints on Saturday with a 5-1 win.
The Liberty League Championship Tournament concludes the women’s tennis team’s 2008 regular season. The Saints must now wait to see if their efforts this season warrant a bid to the 2008 NCAA Championships.
SAINTS TO FACE WILLIAM SMITH IN 2008 LIBERTY LEAGUE THIRD PLACE MATCH April 26: The No. 3 St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team earned a spot in the 2008 Liberty League Tournament Semifinals with a 7-2 victory over No. 6 Union. However, the Saints fell to No. 2 Vassar College 5-1, sending the Scarlet and Brown to the third place match where they will face off against No. 4 William Smith on Sunday at noon.
St. Lawrence defeated Union for the second time in a week by the same margin of 7-2. The Saints held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as senior Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell defeated Union’s Hallie Mabrey and Jess Meola 8-3 at the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Casey Gilman and rookie Stephanie Finn swept Lyndsey Wehrum and Libby Johnson 8-0.
The Dutchwomen scraped out a point with a tight 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles as Kathleen Rucci and Roni Brumberger held off sophomore co-captains Teresa Rodriguez and Liz Ronty 9-7.
The Saints asserted themselves in singles play, though, winning five of the six matches. Lannon overmatched Mabrey at the No. 1 slot 6-1, 6-1, while Finn did the same to Rucci 6-4, 6-0. Gilman came from a set behind to knock off Brumberger at No. 3, 4-6, 7-6, 10-2, as did Hubbell at No. 5, rallying against Wehrum 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
First year student Mackenzie Hall handled Johnson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 6 singles spot. The only point for Union in singles play came at No. 4, as Rodriguez was forced to default against Meola. Though Rodriguez’s inability to play in singles against Union was inconsequential in the 7-2 final, her absence was key in the semifinal match-up against Vassar College.
The team of Lannon and Hubbell again got St. Lawrence off on the right foot with an 8-2 win over Vassar’s Nicole Pontee and Jamison Steele at No. 1 doubles. However, Kelly Barnett and Courtney Burks won a key point for the Brewers against Finn and Gilman, 8-6, and Elizabeth Anderson and Alexis Jacobson put Vassar in front 2-1 with an 8-1 win over Ronty and new doubles partner Paige Cohen.
With Hubbell, Hall and Cohen having to play up a spot in singles due to Rodriguez’s absence, Vassar took advantage and went on to a 5-1 victory. Pontee logged a point for the Brewers against Lannon 6-4, 6-1 at the top-seed, while Burks disposed off Hall at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1. Jacobson recorded the fifth point for Vassar with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Hubbell at No. 4 singles.
Finn led Barnett at No. 2, 6-1, 4-1 while Gilman trailed Krista Romita 6-2, 3-3. Steele and Cohen finished only one game at No. 6 singles before the match came to a decision.
Vassar College will take on top-seeded Skidmore at 9:00am in the 2008 Liberty League Championship match, followed by the Saints and Herons at noon in the third place showdown.
NO. 17 SAINTS RALLY PAST NO. 19 HAMILTON, 5-4 April 22: The No. 17 St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team battled through the absence of No. 1 singles player Kirsten Lannon to defeat No. 19 Hamilton College 5-4 in a non-conference dual-match on Tuesday evening in Clinton, NY. The Saints (12-3) picked up an important pair of wins from rookie Paige Cohen, and received solid play from co-captains Teresa Rodriguez and Liz Ronty.
The Continentals (5-10) took a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match, with their No. 1 and 2 teams winning. Kara and Marni Powers edged out a 9-7 win over first year student Stephanie Finn and sophomore Casey Gilman at the top spot, while Ashley Pardoe and Laura Brantley defeated sophomore Chelsea Hubbell and Rodriguez 8-5.
Cohen and Ronty would provide St. Lawrence’s first point of the match with a hard-fought 8-5 victory over Caroline Greenberg and Maile Thayer at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Having cut the deficit in half, the Saints took the momentum into singles play where they rattled off four wins in six matches to steal the 5-4 victory. Finn earned some redemption with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Kara Powers, while Hubbell knocked off Marni Powers in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) at the No. 4 spot.
Hamilton picked up wins at the No. 2 and 5 slots, where Barany came from behind to defeat Gilman 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 and Pardoe beat rookie Mackenzie Hall 6-2, 6-3 to get the home team to within one point of the victory.
Rodriguez, playing up a spot due to Lannon’s absence, came through in the clutch for the Scarlet and Brown at the No. 3 position where she handed Brantley in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. That put the final point in the hands of Cohen, and the Liberty League’s reigning “Co-Rookie of the Week” did not disappoint. The Pittsburgh, PA native came held off Julia Houlden for a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win that gave St. Lawrence the non-conference triumph.
St. Lawrence will look to carry their momentum into the 2008 Liberty League Championship Tournament, which begins on Saturday, April 26 hosted by William Smith College.
COHEN AND FINN LEAD NO. 17 SAINTS TO 7-2 WIN OVER UNION April 20: The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team, ranked 17 th in the ITA Northeast poll, picked up a 7-2 Liberty League victory on Sunday against Union College. First year students Paige Cohen and Stephanie Finn were key as both won each of their two matches against the Dutchwomen.
St. Lawrence (11-3) carried a 2-1 lead into singles play after winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Finn, alongside sophomore partner Casey Gilman, defeated Roni Brumberger and Kathleen Rucci 8-1, while sophomore co-captain Liz Ronty joined with Cohen in defeating Lyndsay Wehrum and Libby Johnson by the same margin of 8-1.

Hubbell, rookie Mackenzie Hall and Cohen then followed with straight set wins in the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions against Meola, Wehrum and Johnson, respectively.

Finn teamed with sophomore Casey Gilman to pick up St. Lawrence’s lone point in doubles competition against TCNJ, as the duo defeated Amanda Berg and Sarah Roser 8-3 at the No. 2 slot.
However, the Lions rebounded with wins at both No. 1 and 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. Jackie Shtemberg and Christina Contrafatto defeated senior Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell 8-5 at the top spot, while Stefanie Haar and Haley Kutner beat St. Lawrence’s co-captains Teresa Rodriguez and Liz Ronty at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
Finn would again provide the only point for the home team in singles play, this time knocking off a ranked individual in the Northeast region. The Goldens Bridge, NY native outplayed Berg, 6-2, 6-2 to continue her great play this spring and improving to 11-2 overall in singles play this season.
The College of New Jersey was simply too much for St. Lawrence, however, winning the remaining five singles matches in straight sets to hand the Saints their second consecutive loss.
Shtemberg earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lannon at No. 1 singles, while Contrafatto defeated Gilman at the No. 3 slot, 6-1, 6-2. Haar and Kutner swept their matches on the day with wins over Rodriguez and Hubbell, respectively, while Roser defeated rookie Mackenzie Hall at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
“Stephanie (Finn) has been playing at a very high level, and I’m very proud of the effort we put forth today against one of the best teams in the nation,” said Saints head coach Jeremy Freeman. “However, we have a very important match against SUNY New Paltz tomorrow, and we’ll need to match our intensity from today’s match to win it.”
St. Lawrence will take on the Hawks from SUNY New Paltz tomorrow, Sunday, March 30 in the Newell Field House.
FINN RECEIVES WEEKLY CONFERENCE ACCOLADES Mar. 25: Rookie Stephanie Finn was named Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week on Mondayafter leading the St. Lawrence women’s tennis team to a 2-1 week during their Spring training trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Finn (Golden Bridges, NY/John Jay High) finished with a perfect 6-0 record last week. The Goldens Bridge, NY native defeated each of her opponents from Richard Stockton, Mississippi College and Hope College at No. 2 singles in straight sets. Finn and her partner also breezed through their matches at No. 2 doubles, never allowing their opponents to win more than four games.
The Saints return to action Saturday, March 29 as they host The College of New Jersey in Newell Fieldhouse, with matches scheduled to begin at noon.
HOPE COLLEGE HANDS SAINTS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON, 6-3 Mar. 20: The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team suffered their first loss of the season in dual-match play, as the Saints dropped their match with Hope College by the score of 6-3 on Wednesday in Hilton Head, SC. The Scarlet and Brown are now 4-1 on the season.
The Flying Dutch came out of doubles play with a 2-1 lead, with St. Lawrence earning one point at the No. 2 slot. Sophomore Casey Gilman teamed with rookie Stephanie Finn to defeat Christine Garcia and Danielle Werley 8-4.
However, Hope won at both No. 1 and 3 doubles, as Lucy Himes and Sammi Stille beat senior Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell 8-1 and Katherine Garcia and Nicole Spagnuolo knocked off rookie Kelley Jenkins and sophomore Liz Ronty, 8-2.
Stille continued to play well for Hope College as she beat Lannon at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1 to extend her team’s lead. However, Finn and Gilman would even things up at 3-3 with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Finn beat Christina Garcia 6-2, 6-4, while Gilman finished off Werley by the same score.
The Flying Dutch would capture the win behind their depth, though, as they swept the final three singles matches to earn the 6-3 victory. Marissa Kooyers defeated Hubbell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, while Himes topped Hall 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot. Katherine Garcia would then hand rookie Paige Cohen a 6-2, 6-2 loss to conclude the match and give Hope College the win.
“Today’s loss is a learning lesson, as the season is very young and we see a few areas we need to work on as we move forward into conference play,” said Saints’ head coach Jeremy Freeman. “We fought hard and put in a good effort.”
Wednesday’s match was the Saints’ last in Hilton Head, SC, as they finish the trip 2-1. The Scarlet and Brown will be in action again next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 29 and 30 in the Newell Field House when they take on The College of New Jersey and New Paltz, respectively.

SAINTS REMAIN UNBEATEN WITH 6-3 VICTORY OVER RICHARD STOCKTON Mar. 17: The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team received solid performances at the top of their singles line-up on Monday en route to an important 6-3 victory over Richard Stockton in Hilton Head, SC. The Saints picked up wins from senior Kirsten Lannon, first year Stephanie Finn and sophomore Casey Gilman at the top-three singles spots to pick up the win.
"This was an important win for the women today,” said St. Lawrence University head coach Jeremy Freeman. “ Stockton is another school in the independent pool for selections to the NCAA. This win puts us one step closer to repeating our run last year."
Despite dropping the No. 1 doubles match, St. Lawrence was able to carry the doubles portion of the match by winning at both the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Finn and Gilman dominated Richard Stockton’s duo of Kelli Williams and Jess Victor, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Liz Ronty and first year student Kelley Jenkins defeated Shelly Sai and Ana Estevez, 8-5.
Richard Stockton’s lone point from doubles play came from Christina Phillips and Christy Alexander, who knocked off St. Lawrence’s top pairing of Lannon and sophomore Chelsea Hubbell, 8-5.
The trio of Lannon, Finn and Gilman would put the match out of reach by sweeping the top three spots of singles play to ensure the Saints’ victory. Lannon defeated Phillips 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Finn beat Alexander 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2. Gilman then continued her impressive string of victories with a 6-1, 6-1 trouncing of Williams.
Though Victor and Sai would take their singles matches at No. 4 and 5, respectively, over Hubbell and first year student Mackenzie Hall, rookie Paige Cohen would put the finishing touches on St. Lawrence’s win with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Estevez.
St. Lawrence will look to stay unbeaten in dual-matches this season when they take on Mississippi College on Tuesday, March 18 in Hilton Head, SC.
