2006-2007 Stories SAINTS 14TH IN FINAL ITA NORTHEAST RANKINGS June 12: St. Lawrence University’s women’s tennis team, which made its first NCAA tournament appearance this past spring and advanced in the tournament with a win over Plymouth State was ranked 14 th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast rankings for 2006-07.
The Saints, who finished the year 16-3 and had a 12-match unbeaten streak before top-ranked Amherst ended their season in the NCAA tournament, also had two ranked players.
Junior Kristen Lannon was ranked 21 st in the Northeast in singles and Lannon and senior Anne Moulin were ranked 12 th in the region in doubles
SAINTS FALL TO AMHERST IN SECOND ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT May 5: The Amherst College women's tennis team ended St. Lawrence's first NCAA Tournament run in program history with a 5-0 victory over the Saints in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon in Amherst, MA. The Jeffs also snapped the Saints 12-game win streak, as St. Lawrence finishes the season with a strong 16-3 record. The Jeffs, the number one overall seed in the tournament, advance to the third round to take on The College of New Jersey
Amherst swept the doubles round with victories of 8-4, 8-4 and 8-2 to take a commanding 3-0 lead into singles play. Junior Laura Stein wrapped up the #6 singles match in quick fashion with a 6-0, 6-0 victory before first-year Brittany Berckes sealed the deal for the Jeffs by winning 6-3, 6-3 in the #2 match.
In singles action, the Jeffs needed just two wins for the decision. Stein defeated junior Sara Bernier, 6-0, 6-0 at six singles for the first match and Berckes defeated Moulin, 6-3, 6-3 for the decision.
At the time of the decision, Lannon was trailing Menezes, 6-3, 1-1 at one singles, Karam was trailing Snyder 6-2, 4-1 at three singles and Rodriguez was behind, 6-0, 3-5, in her match against Murphy at four singles. At five singles, Gilman trailed Hudson, 6-2, 4-0.
Regardless of today's outcome, the Saints close out one of the most impressive campaigns in program history and will go down in history as the first team to receive a tournament bid. The Saints, won 12 straight matches in the spring season, including a sweep of league opponents.
SAINTS DEFEAT PLYMOUTH ST. TO ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT May 4: Just three days after the St. Lawrence women's tennis team received its first NCAA Tournament bid in program history, the team picked up its first NCAA Tournament win. St. Lawrence defeated Plymouth State Friday afternoon in convincing fashion, 5-0, at Amherst College in Amherst, MA. The match, which was played only to decision, took less than an hour and a half. The win improves the Saints to 16-2.
The Saints will advance to face Amherst College, who is the number one overall seed in the Division III NCAA Championship and received a first-round bye, tomorrow at 10 a.m.
With clear skies and enjoyable tennis weather, head coach Jeremy Freeman said the match was short and sweet.
"The weather here is beautiful and sunny, although the wind was a little tricky, we handled it well," Freeman said. "We closed out points and games well and played great. The ladies are excited to take on Amherst."
The Saints took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play with Plymouth winning only four total games in three matches. The Saints pairs cruised to 8-1, 8-1 and 8-2 victories. The one doubles team of junior Kirsten Lannon and Anne Moulin, ranked No. 10 in the Northeast by the ITA, defeated Joan Kietzman and Meghan Rodier, 8-1. At two doubles, sophomore Liz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman topped Erica Huckins and Briley Boisvert, 8-1 while senior Denise Kyte and sophomore Teresa Rodriguez defeated Denise Huckins and Melissa Castellano, 8-2.
After a 10-minute warm-up period, the fast-paced match resumed with Karam and Gilman picking up wins at #3 and #5 respectively, to make the win official for the Saints. Karam defeated Kietzman, 6-1, 6-0 and Gilman defeated Campbell, 6-0, 6-0.
When the Saints seized the match, all St. Lawrence players were leading their opponents. At one singles, Lannon led Rodier, 5-2 while Moulin was on top of Huckins, 6-3, 2-0. Rodriguez looked to be in good position to take her match with a strong 6-0, 4-0 lead over Boisvert. At six singles, Bernier led Amanda Arponen, 5-3.
Amherst will be a tough opponent for St. Lawrence as the Jeffs own a 14-4 record with a 4-1 mark in the NESCAC.
SAINTS WILL FACE PLYMOUTH ST. IN NCAA TOURNAMENT May 1: The NCAA released its 48 NCAA Tournament bids for the Division III Women's Championships Monday night, handing the St. Lawrence women's tennis team its first bid in program history. The Saints, winners of 11 straight, are 15-2 on the season and ranked No.14 in the Northeast by the ITA.
St. Lawrence will take on Plymouth St., from Plymouth, N.H., at 10 a.m. Friday at the regional site of Amherst College in Amherst, MA.. The winner of the match will advance to take on Amherst College, who received a first-round bye, on Saturday. The teams will a play single-elimination tournament, with first, second and third rounds played at regional sites. The quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds of the team championship will be played May 15-17 at the University of Mary Washington Battleground Complex hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
Head coach Jeremy Freeman said he was extremely proud of the ladies' accomplishments.
"I am so proud of what we have achieved this year," Freeman said. "To finish the regular season on the 11 game win streak shows the focus and hard work the women have put in all year. To receive the first NCAA bid in women's tennis history at St. Lawrence is a great accomplishment and we look forward to our first round match."
Automatic qualification for the championship is granted to the 32 conference champions while eight teams are selected from independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions, like St. Lawrence. The remaining eight teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that do not win their conference's automatic qualifier.
Plymouth State, who won the Little East Conference Championship, received an automatic bid as a conference champion. The Panthers, who compete during the fall for their regular season, actually won the conference championship last fall and with it the Little East's first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
The Panthers have seen little action on the court this spring, competing in only two matches. Members of the Panthers team that will compete in the NCAA Championship are senior co-captains Erica Huckins and Brittany Campbell, juniors Briley Boisvert and Joan Kietzman, sophomore Meghan Rodier, and freshman Amanda Arponen, Melissa Castellano and Denise Huckins. Erica Huckins and Kietzman won the LEC singles titles last fall at three and five, respectively, and Kietzman and Rodier team up to win the two doubles championships.
The Saints, will use the line-up that has brought them success this season. Junior Kirsten Lannon, the No. 24 ranked player in the Northeast, will play at one singles, with senior Anne Moulin at the two spot. Sophomore Liz Karam will play at three singles, while sophomore Teresa Rodriguez will compete at four singles. Freshman Casey Gilman, who owns an 11-1 record on the season, will compete at five singles with junior Sara Bernier competing at #6.
In doubles action, Lannon and Moulin, ranked No. 10 in the Northeast by the ITA, will play at one doubles, with Karam and Gilman at #2. Senior Denise Kyte and Rodriguez will square off at three doubles.
Hunter College and Wilkes University are also part of the Saints four-team bracket. Those two schools will compete with the advancing team to face The College of New Jersey on Saturday.
SAINTS FINSH SEASON STRONG April 28: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team closed out the regular season on an 11-game win streak after topping Union College, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
The win moves the Saints to 15-2 on the season as they wait for the NCAA to hand out its tournament bids on Monday, April 30.
On Saturday, the Saints defeated Union convincingly collecting the sweep. In doubles action, junior Kirsten Lannon and senior Anne Moulin defeated Jennie Werts and Jessica Meola, 8-3, in one doubles. Sophomore Liz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman topped Hallie Mabrey and Brittany Miller, 8-3, while sophomore Teresa Rodriguez and senior Denise Kyte won, 8-1, over Marla Feldman and Sarah Stiles.
At one singles, Lannon topped Werts, 7-6, 6-3 and Moulin won at two singles, 6-3, 6-0, over Mabrey. At three singles, Karam defeated Miller, 6-3, 6-3. Rodriguez topped Kathleen Rucci, 6-0, 6-0 and Gilman moved to 11-1 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Abby Cable. Sara Bernier rounded out the sweep for the Saints with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Meola.
Head coach Jeremy Freeman said the win caps off a strong season for the Saints.
"The ladies performance today was admirable," Freeman said. "They have worked hard to do all that they can to make us a viable selection for an NCAA Tournament bid. We will see what happens Monday."
SAINTS TOP HAMILTON April 18: St. Lawrence moved to 14-2 after defeating Hamilton, 7-2, Wednesday at Newell Field House in Canton, NY. The Saints who were ranked No. 24 in the Northeast Region in the ITA's midseason rankings, have just one match left before the NCAA Tournament field is selected on April 30.
St. Lawrence swept Hamilton in doubles action as junior Kirsten Lannon and senior Anne Moulin, who were ranked No. 10 in the Northeast Region by the ITA, defeated Laura Brantley and Emily Poe, 8-4, at one doubles. Freshman Casey Gilman and sophomore Liz Karam topped Elizabeth Goheen and Ashley Pardoe, 8-0, at two doubles. Sophomore Teresa Rodriguez and senior Denise Kyte rounded out the doubles sweep for the Saints with an 8-1 win over Elizabeth McDonald and Mary Wilder.
In singles action, Lannon, who was ranked No. 24 in the ITA's midseason rankings, defeated Brantley, 6-4, 6-3 at one singles. Moulin defeated Poe, 6-3, 6-2 at two singles. Karam added a win at three singles, topping Horn 6-2, 6-3, while Gilman won, 6-1, 6-1, over Goheen at five singles.
Hamilton took wins at four and six singles as Pardoe defeated Rodriguez, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 at four singles and McDonald won, 6-1, 6-1 over senior Sara Bernier.
The Saints are off this weekend and will spend next week on the practice court before wrapping up their regular season April 28 when they host Union College.
SAINTS RECEIVE THREE TOP 25 RANKINGS IN NORTHEAST REGION OF ITA April 17: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its 2007 mid-season standings yesterday, ranking the St. Lawrence women’s tennis team 14 th in the Northeast Region of the ITA.
The Saints, who were previously ranked 24 th, defeated their Liberty League opponent, Skidmore, on April 1 to jump ahead of the Thoroughbreds receive a No. 15 ranking. Middlebury received the No. 1 mid-season ranking with Williams College at No. 2. Amherst received the No.3 ranking while Bowdoin and Tufts rounded out the top five at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. The College of New Jersey, who defeated St. Lawrence on February 17, received the No. 7 ranking.
Head coach Jeremy Freeman said the women’s success is a product of their diligence at practice.
“Receiving the ranking of 14 in the Northeast Region represents the hard work the team has done to achieve this goal,” Freeman said. “The ladies have worked extremely hard this spring and have won nine straight matches against really tough competition.”
The ITA ranked St. Lawrence senior Kirsten Lannon the No. 24 player in the Northeast Region. Lannon is one of five Liberty League singles players to be represented in the top 25, confirming the strength of the league.
Achieving a top 25 ranking in the Northeast Region is a significant accomplishment, Freeman said. “Having Kirsten listed in that elite group is a tremendous achievement, especially in the Northeast Region where there are many top singles players,” Freeman said.
Lannon and her doubles partner, senior Anne Moulin, broke the top 10 in the doubles rankings. Set at No. 10 in the Northeast Region, Lannon and Moulin are the second-highest ranked doubles team in the Liberty League. Debbie Sharnak and Kelly Graham of Vassar College were ranked No. 8 while Chelsea Rauck and Tara Ware of William Smith received the No. 14 ranking.
With two dual matches remaining in the season-the Saints will take on Hamilton College tomorrow and Union College on April 28, the Saints are focused on receiving an NCAA Tournament big, announced April 30. The NCAA Tournament will begin May 5.
SAINTS TOP CORTLAND; WIN NINTH STRAIGHT April 15: Put another W in the win column for the St. Lawrence women's tennis team. The Saints swept Cortland, 9-0, Sunday afternoon in Syracuse, NY to move to 13-2 on the season and win their ninth straight match.
The Saints win was convincing as Cortland won just one game in all three doubles matches and the Saints took all of the singles win in straight sets.
In doubles action, junior Kirsten Lannon and doulbes partner, senior Anne Moulin, improved their record to 9-1 on the season, defeating Andrea TerBush and Meg Cole, 8-1, at one doubles. In two doubles, sophomore Liz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman defeated Natalie Fernandes and Amanda McElroy, 8-0, making them a perfect 10-0 on the season. Senior Denise Kyte and sophomore Teresa Rodriguez completed the doubles sweep for the Saints with an 8-0 win over Merchon Brower and Dayna Brent.
In singles play, Lannon defeated TerBush, 6-3, 6-1 at one singles while Moulin topped Fernandes, 6-1, 6-1, at two singles. At three singles, Karam won over Cole, 6-2, 6-4. Rodriguez earned another win for the Saints at four singles, defeating Erinlee Huggard, 6-2, 6-0. Gilman improved to 9-1 on the season, the best record among the Saints, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over McElroy at five singles. Senior Sara Bernier completed the sweep for the Saints with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Brent.
The Saints now have just two dual matches before the NCAA Tournament beginning May 5. The Saints will take on Hamilton on Wednesday and Union on April 28.
SAINTS DEFEAT ITHACA April 14: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team moved to 12-2 on Saturday night with a 7-2 win over Ithaca College.
The Saints took wins at one and two doulbes as junior Kirsten Lannon and senior Anne Moulin defeated Erin Chapman and Alyssa Jaffe, 8-4, at one doubles. Sophomore Liz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman topped Natalie Jenereski and Stephanie Racine, 8-0, at two doubles. One of only two slip-ups by the Saints came at three doulbes where sophomore Teresa Rodriguez and senior Denise Kyte fell to Rachel Gunderson and Devra Reiman, 8-4.
At one singles, Lannon defeated Chapman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, while Moulin topped Gunderson, 6-3, 6-2. Karam came-from-behind to win at three singles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 over Jaffe. Gilman defeated Sarah Hollis, 6-2, 6-1 at five singles and senior Sarah Bernier rounded out the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 win over Racine at six singles. The Saints only singles loss came at four singles where Ithaca's Jenereski defeated Rodriguez 7-6 (2), 6-4.
The Saints, who have won eight straight matches, will take on Cortland tomorrow afternoon.
SAINTS TOP ROCHESTER April 8: The Saints made it a clean sweep for the weekend of April 7-8 with a 9-0 win over Rochester on Sunday in Rochester, N.Y. The Saints, who defeated Nazareth, 8-1, on April 7, moved to 11-2 on the season and collected their seventh win in a row.
The Saints were strong from top to bottom, winning convincingly in two and three doubles and taking all singles matches in straight sets. The Saints only struggles came in one doubles when junior Kirsten Lannon and senior Anne Moulin had to orchestrate a come-from-behind victory to seal the 9-8 (4) win over Alexa Perry and Victoria Wells. In two doubles, sophomore Kiz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman defeated Deborah Katz and Michelle Desrosiers, 8-2, and in three doubles sophomore Teresa Rodriguez and senior Denise Kyte defeated Brittany Bowman and Kristen Shaw, 8-1.
St. Lawrence swept through its singles matches taking six convincing victories. In one singles, Lannon defeated Perry, 6-3, 6-4. Moulin beat Bowman, 6-4, 6-4, in two singles and Karam continued the Saints success with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Wells in three singles. Rodriguez posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Shaw in four singles while Gilman turned in a 6--0, 6-0 victory at five singles. Sara Bernier completed the sweep for the Saints with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Katz.
With just one loss in the spring season and seven straight under their belts, the Saints have four more dual matches remaining before the NCAA Tournament on May 5. Head coach Jeremy Freeman said the Saints remained focused on postseason play.
"The women continue to work hard and I think this weekend's matches reflect that," Freeman said. "With four dual matches left, we are hoping to finish strong to put ourselves in the best possible position for an NCAA Tournament bid."
The Saints will be back on the court on April 18 when they travel to Ithaca.
SAINTS DEFEAT NAZARETH April 7: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team moved to 10-2 with an 8-1 win over Nazareth on Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.
The Saints played strong from top to bottom, taking all three doubles matches and five of six singles contests. In doubles action, junior Kirsten Lannon and senior Anne Moulin defeated Stephanie Parvan and Rachel Leonard 8-3. In two doubles, sophomore Liz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman defeated Danielle Carinci and Kathryn Cross, 8-0, moving them to 7-0 on the season. Meanwhile sophomore Teresa Rodriguez and senior Denise Kyte topped Emily McAdoo and Betsy O'Brien 8-6 in three doubles.
Lannon turned in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Parvan in one singles to get the Saints off to a strong start and Karam defeated O'Brien in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in three singles. In four singles, Rodriguez defeated Martinez, 6-2, 7-5. Gilman beat McAdoo, 6-1, 6-1, and senior Sara Bernier defeated Ellen Austin, 6-2, 6-1, to close out a strong match for the Saints.
Nazareth's only win came in two singles when Rachel Leonard defeated Moulin in a thrilling match 7-5, 1-6, (10-6).
The Saints will waste no time getting back on the court as they will take on Rochester tomorrow afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
SAINTS SEIZE KEY VICTORY IN LIBERTY LEAGUE PLAY April 1: It was a match-up that pitted two of the top teams in the region as the No. 24 ranked Saints took on the No. 15 ranked Thoroughbreds on Sunday in Saratoga Springs, NY. The Saints pulled out the key victory, 5-3, in a tight match in both doubles and singles action.
The win over the Thoroughbreds, who were coming off a strong win over No. 9 ranked Connecticut College on March 17 in Orlando, FL., marks only the second time in eight years the St. Lawrence women's tennis team has defeated Skidmore.
The Saints got off to a strong start in doubles action, taking two of three matches. Junior Kirsten Lannon and senior Anne Moulin defeated Kate Hugo and Danielle Fancher, 8-4 at one doubles. Sophomore Liz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman topped Laura Attley and Kyra Travis 9-8 (7) in two doubles before sophomore Teresa Rodriguez and senior Denise Kyte fell to Stephanie Abrams and Jenny Grabler in three doubles.
Singles play was back and forth between the two league foes. At one singles, Lannon defeated Fancher 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. Karam topped Abrams, 6-3, 6-4, at three singles while Rodriguez fell to Grabler, 6-2, 6-4. At six singles, Bernier fell to Travis 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
With two matches remaining, two and five singles, the Saints needed just one win to seize the victory while Skidmore needed both. Just as poor weather was about to turn worse, Gilman won her match against McEvoy, 6-1, 7-5, to give the Saints the win. Moulin's match against Attley at two singels did not finish as the weather became too poor to compete in.
The Saints will take the court again when they travel to Nazareth on April 7.
SAINTS DEFEAT ALLEGHENY; REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN HILTON HEAD, S.C. March 22: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team defeated Allegheny, 9-0, on Thursday in Hilton Head, S.C., moving their record to an undefeated 27-0 during the spring break trip. The Saints, who did not drop a match during the trip to Hilton Head, swept through both singles and doubles play Thursday afternoon for the convincing win over Allegheny.
Kirsten Lannon defeated Amanda Bolger 6-0, 7-5 in one singles action while Anne Moule defeated Tamara Prairie 6-0, 6-3. In three singles, Liz Karam topped Jackie Conrad, 5-7, 6-0 (10-1) while Teresa Rodriguez took Meggie Oravec in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Casey Gilman and Sarah Bernier rounded out the singles sweep for the Saints. Gilman defeated Molly Findley 6-2, 6-0 and Bernier topped Yina Wyss 6-2, 4-6, (10-4).
In doubles action, Lannon and Moulin defeated Bolger and Conrad, 8-3, in one doubles. Gilman and Karam beat Findley and Wyss 8-0 and Denise Kyte and Chelsea Hubbell defeated Prairie and Oravec, 9-7.
SAINTS PLAY STRONG AGAINST COLLEGE OF WOOSTER March 20: It was another perfect day for tennis in Hilton Head, S.C. as the St. Lawrence women's tennis team competed in the second of three matches during its spring trip. The Saints, who swept Principia College yesterday afternoon, met the College of Wooster this afternoon. The Saints captured their second sweep in as many days, defeating College of Wooster, 9-0.
The women started the day strong, taking all three doubles matches to open play. Junior Kirsten Lannon and senior Anne Moulin defeated Joanna Tysko and Elissa Lauber 9-7 in one doubles action. Sophomore Liz Karam and freshman Casey Gilman topped Wooster's number two doubles team, Brenna Hart and Erin Bauer, 8-0, to give the Saints their second win of the afternoon while freshman Chelsea Hubbell and senior Denise Kyte rounded out the doubles sweep for the Saints with an 8-2 win over Eden Kovacik and Kimee Rankin.
In singles action, the Saints took wins in all six matches to seize the comfortable win. Lannon defeated Tysko 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 in one doubles action while Moulin defeated Lauber in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. In three sinlges play, Karam took a win over Hart, 6-0, 6-0. In four singles action, sophomore Teresa Rodriguez defeated Rankin, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Casey Gilman and junior Sara Bernier rounded out the match sweep for the Saints with wins over Erin Bauer and Sarah Suddendorf respectively. Gilman defeated Bauer 6-0, 6-0 and Bernier topped Suddendorf 6-0, 6-1.
The Saints will be back on the court March 22 for a match against Allegheny, its final of the spring trip.
SAINTS SWEEP OPENING MATCH IN HILTON HEAD, S.C. March 19: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team played its first of three matches scheduled during its spring break trip Monday, defeating Principia College 9-0. The Saints, who travelled to Hilton Head Friday March 16, will take on Wooster on Tuesday and on March 22.
Monday epitomized perfect tennis weather, head coach Jeremy Freeman said. With the sun shining and a slight breeze on the courts, the Saints enjoyed the first match of their spring trip.
The Saints swept through the singles matches winning all six contests by convincing margins. Junior Kirsten Lannon defeated Kathyrn Pomeroy 6-0, 6-1 in the number one singles match while senior Anne Moulin topped Cory Sprague, 6-2, 6-1, in the number two singles match. Liz Karam added a victory for the Saints at the number three singles position defeating Juliana Ko, 6-2 6-4. Sophomore Teresa Rodriguez kept the Saints undefeated in singles action with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ashley Ragnow. At the number five singles position, freshman Casey Gilman got a win over Heather Ruszczyk 6-0, 6-0. Sara Bernier kept the Saints undefeated in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over KC Gahlon.
In doubles action, Lannon and Moulin defeated Pomeroy and Sprague 8-0, while Karam and Gilman topped Ko and Erwin, 8-2. Rodriguez and Kyte kept the Saints undefeated with an 8-3 win over Ruszczyk and Furbush in three doubles action.
"This was a great match to build confidence in moving towards conference play," Freeman said. "But we still have to stay focused for tough matches against Wooser and Allegheny."
The Saints will match up against Wooster tomorrow in Hilton Head, S.C.
SAINTS TOP WILLIAM SMITH March 4: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team played its first home match of the 2007 season Sunday defeating William Smith, 6-3.
The two teams were even through singles play. William Smith's Chelsea Rauck, who finished the fall season ranked 16th in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated junior Kirsten Lannon in the number one singles match. Williams Smith added another win to their score when Tara Ware defeated sophomore Liz Karam at the number two singles position.
Senior Anne Moulin and sophomore Teresa Rodriguez evened the score at two matches a piece after Moulin defeated Meghan Kelley 6-4, 6-1 and Rodriguez topped Shari Damon, 6-2, 7-5, both in straight sets.
William Smith's Sam Schraeter edged out freshman Casey Gilman 3-6, 5-7 to give the Herons a one-match edge over St. Lawrence in singles play. Junior Sara Bernier responded for the Saints however, defeating Cory Turner 2-6, 6-4 (10-7) to give each team three wins in the singles competition.
With the results of the match pending on double play, the Saints dominated, sweeping all three doubles matches.
Lannon and Moulin defeated Rauck and Ware 8-5 in the number one doubles match and Gilman and Karam took the number two doubles match with an 8-4 win over Kelley and Campbell. Senior Denise Kyte and Rodriguez completed the sweep for the Saints with an 8-2 win over Schraeter and Turner.
The Saints will travel to Hilton Head, S.C. for their spring trip before returning back to Liberty League competition when they play at Skidmore April 1.
SAINTS FALL TO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY, 8-1 Feb. 17: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team opened the 2007 half of their season at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. Feb. 17. The Saints fell to the No. 29 ranked TCNJ, 8-1.
In the number one singles match, TCNJ freshman Jackie Shtemberg picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over junior Kirsten Lannon. Ranked number 9 nationally, Shtemberg is now 17-3 on the season. At the number two singles position, TCNJ's Christona Contrafatto defeated Anne Moulin 6-1, 6-2 while Haley Kutner defeated Liz Karam 6-2, 6-2 at the number three singles position. At the number four spot, sophomore Teresa Rodriguez fell to Kristen Turturiello 6-2, 6-0 while TCNJ's Stefanie Haar defeated Casey Gilman 6-4, 6-1. At the number six spot, Sara Bernier fell to Sarah Roser 6-4, 6-2.
Shtemberg teamed up with Christina Contrafatto to best the Saints top pair of Lannon and Moulin 8-1. The Saints only win of the day came at the number two double position when Karam and Gilman beat Kutner and Haar, 8-3. TCNJ's Turturiello and Roser defeated Chelsea Hubbell and Rodriguez 9-7 in number three doubles.
The Saints will be back on the court March 3 when they host the Icebreaker Tournament.
WOMEN'S TEAM RANKED 24TH OUT OF 110 BY ITA Nov. 28: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released their rankings for the fall season on Tuesday morning as the St. Lawrence women's tennis was ranked 24th out of 110 schools in the Northeast section. The ranking comes after the Saints short fall season, where the team competed in just five matches going 4-1.
The majority of the Saints matches will take place in the Spring seaon when they will have the opportunity to face more of their Liberty League foes.
KARAM/GILMAN FALL IN SEMIFINALS OF NYSWCAA CHAMPIONSHIP Oct. 22: The Saints number one doubles team of Liz Karam and Casey Gilman fell to Colleen Cross and Cassandra Webster from Rochester 9-8 (4) in the semifinals of the one doubles draw at the NYSWCAA on Sunday. Cross and Webster went on to defeat Debbie Sharnak and Kelly Graham 9-8 (8) in the Sunday's final to win the bracket.
Vassar College won the state crown convincingly, finishing the tournament with 62. Rochester finished in second place with 38 points while New York University came in third place with 30 points. The Saints finished the state tournament in a four-way tie for twelfth place with six points.
KARAM/GILMAN TO COMPETE IN SEMIFINALS OF NYSWCAA CHAMPIONSHIP Oct. 21: Liz Karam and Casey Gilman will play in tomorrow's semifinals at the NYSWCAA Championships in Ithaca, NY. Karam and Gilman defeated Chelsea Rauck and Shari Damon of William Smith College 8-3 in Saturday's quarterfinals.
In the second doubles draw, Chelsea Hubbell and Candice Vallejos faced Jaclyn Manning and Hayley McLaughlin from New York University. The Saints number two doubles team fell to NYU 8-1.
SAINTS TRAVEL TO ITHACA FOR NYSWCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Oct. 20: Six members of the women's tennis team are competing in the NYSWCAA Tournament Oct. 20-22. The tournament is flighted so that competition exists between players of the same seed. Each match is worth two points.
Elizabeth Karam, playing in the number one singles draw, faced Plattsburgh's number one player, Ashley Abar, at 8:30 Friday morning. Karam lost 6-2, 6-1. Abar will advance to the second round. In the second singles draw, Chelsea Hubbell fell to Meghan Kelley of William Smith College 6-3, 6-3.
In the third singles draw, Casey Gilman lost to Andrea TerBush of Cortland 6-3, 6-2. Candice Vallejos, playing at the fourth position, got edged out by Ashley Smith of Plattsburgh 6-2, 2-6, 10-7. Sara Bernier, competing in the fifth singles draw, lost to Emily McAdoo from Nazareth 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. Liz Ronty, playing in the sixth singles draw, fell to Sarah Hollis from Ithaca College, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Saints number one team of Liz Karam and Casey Gilman defeated Jessica Meola and Jennie Werts from Union College, 8-6. The Saints number one team will take on Shari Damon and Chelsea Rauck from William Smith College in the quarterfinals. Hubbell and Vallejos, the Saints number two doubles team, defeated Allcia Kaucher and Megan Peters from St. John Fisher, 8-4. They will face Jaclyn Manning and Hayley McLaughlin from New York University. The Saints third doubles team of Sara Bernier and Denise Kyte fell to Charlotte Kaplan and Michelle Pelersi from Rensselaer 9-8 (1).
SAINTS TAKE FIFTH PLACE AT LIBERTY LEAGUE TOURNAMENT Oct. 8: St. Lawrence's women's tennis team fiinished Liberty League Tournament play with a convincing 6-3 win over William Smith College. With the win, the Saints finished fifth place in the tournament.
The Saints started out strong in doubles play as Kirsten Lannon and Liz Karam defeated Chelsea Rauck and Shari Damon 9-7. The Herons rallied in the second doubles match as Meghan Kelley and Erinn Cain topped Chelsea Hubbell and Candice Vallejos 9-7. The Saints doubles team of Denise Kyte and Sara Bernier defeated Alex Connell and Ali Haseotes 8-6.
In singles play, the Saints took four of six matches. Lannon fell to Chelsea Rauck and Hubbell lost to Damon 6-4, 6-4. Karam defeated Kelley 6-2, 6-1, Gilman topped Schraeter 6-3, 6-1, Vallejos defeated Cain 6-2, 7-5 and Bernier outlasted Levenson 7-5, 6-4.
Vassar College won its fifth straight Liberty League Tournament with an 8-1 win over Skidmore while Hamilton College beat Rochester 6-3 to take third place. Union took seventh place with a 5-4 win over RPI.
SAINTS TO PLAY FOR FIFTH PLACE IN LIBERTY LEAGUE TOURNAMENT Oct. 7: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team fell to Rochester 5-2 in the first round of the 2006 Liberty League Tournament. Rochester swept St. Lawrence in doubles play as their number one team of Colleen Cross and Cassandra Webster topped Kirsten Lannon and Liz Karam 8-6. The Yellowjackets team of Alexa Perry and Melinda Beckmann defeated Chelsea Hubbell and Candice Vallejos 8-3 while Megan Mears and Victoria Wells beat Denis Kyte and Sara Bernier 8-2.
In singles play, Webster defeated Karam 6-2, 6-1 and Perry topped Hubbell 7-5, 6-0 to clinch the victory. The Saints got wins from Bernier, who defeated Wells 6-1, 6-3 and Casey Gilman, who outlasted Beckmann 6-1, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, the Saints defeated Union 5-1. They will face William Smith Sunday at 10:30 a.m. for fifth place in the tournament.
SAINTS DEFEAT PLATTSBURGH Oct. 3: The Saints remain undefeated in their fall season, beating Plattsburgh 7-2 Tuesday night. The Saints went 2-1 in doubles play as the number one doubles team of Kirsten Lannon and Liz Karam defeated Ashley Abar and Ashley Smith 8-4, and the Saints number three team of Sara Bernier and Denise Kyte beat Angela Roy and Katelyn Rogers 8-0. Chelsea Hubbell and Candice Vallejos, the Saints number two doubles team, fell to Tiarra Garrow and Valerie Papi 8-3.
The Saints took five of six singles matches. Lannon defeated Abar, 7-6, 6-0 and Karam swept Papi, 6-0, 6-0 in the first two matches. Chelsea Hubbell struggled with Garrow, falling 6-0, 6-0. The Saints however, took the next three matches. Casey Gilman swept past Smith, 6-0, 6-0, Vallejos defeated Angela Roy 6-2, 6-1 and Sara Bernier outlasted Danielle Circelli 6-3, 6-0.
The match was a good warm-up for this weekend's Liberty League Tournament, hosted by St. Lawrence, said Saints head coach Jeremy Freeman. He said the Saints got off to a slow start in doubles, but played better in singles play.
"We started a little slow," Freeman said. "But the ladies responded nicely in the singles. We are glad we came out with a win before a big tournament this weekend."
SAINTS COMPETE IN ITA TOURNAMENT Sept. 24: Four St. Lawrence women's tennis players particpated in the singles bracket of the ITA Tournament Sept. 23 and 24 while two doubles team competed. Leading the Saints singles players was Kirsten Lannon, the number five seed in the tournament. Lannon advanced to the third round, defeating Leigh Bryson from RIT 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and Blake Leeser of Manhattanville 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. Lannon fell to Stefanie Harr from College of New Jersey 6-3, 6-2 in the third round.
Also competing for the Saints was Liz Karam, Casey Gilman and Chelsea Hubbell. Karam lost to Laura Atley from Skidmore 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Golman and Hubbell also fell in the first round. Paisley Coats of Manhattenville defeated Golman 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 and Laura Hale of St. John Fisher defeated Hubbell 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
In doubles play, the Saints top team of Lannon and Karam advanced to the quarterfinal round. They fell to Eri Yamakawa and Dana Lim from College of New Jersey 8-6. The Saints doubles team of Chelsea Hubbell and Candice Vallejos defeated Maria Carroll and Michelle Gbelama 8-3 before falling to Shari Damon and Chelsea Rauck 8-2 in the second round.
Jackie Shtemberg from College of New Jersey defeated Dana Bacalla of Stevens in the Championship match 6-0, 6-0. Shtemberg and her partner Christina Contrafatto defeated Dana Bacalla and Eri Yamakawa from New Paltz State 8-3 to capture the doubles title.
SAINTS DEFEAT POTSDAM STATE IN SEASON OPENING MATCH Sept. 19: The Saints got off to a strong start to their fall season on Tuesday night beating Potsdam State 9-0. The Saints dominated in both singles and doubles play as the Saints number one doubles team of Kirsten Lannon and Elizabeth Karam defeated Christina Collins and Danielle Otto 8-0, their number two team of Chelsea Hubbell and Candice Vallejos defeated Erika Brown and Erin Hogan 8-2 and Denise Kyte and Sara Bernier beat Jessica Castaneda and Jennifer Barke 8-1.
St. Lawrence carried that momentum into singles play as Lannon swept Otto 6-0, 6-0, Karam defeated Brown 6-0, 6-1 and Hubbell topped Hogan 6-2, 6-0. In the bottom three singles matches, Gilman swept Collins 6-0, 6-0, Vallejos beat Castanenda 6-0, 6-1 and Bernier topped Barke 6-1, 6-1.
Head coach Jeremy Freeman was pleased with the poise and confidence of his team in their first match.
" I though we had great focus and consistent play from top to bottom," Freeman said.
The top four singles players and two doubles teams from St. Lawrence were selected to play at the ITA Tournament this weekend.
