ROCHESTER SQUEAKS PAST SAINTS, 5-4

Apr. 9: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team fell behind by the score of 2-1 after the double's matches and were unable to make up the point as the Rochester Yellowjackets topped the Saints 5-4 on Sunday afternoon in the Newell Field House.

In double's play, the top St. Lawrence duo of Anne Moulin and Kirsten Lannon continued their impressive play by downing Rochester's top team of Cross and Perry by the score of 8-3. However, the Yellowjackets won the next two double's points, including a down-to-the-wire match between Rochester's No. 2 team of Grieshaber and Baker versus St. Lawrence's Teresa Rodriguez and Liz Karam. The visitors battled their way to a 9-7 win in a match that easily could've gone either way.

Trailing 2-1 entering the single's round, the Saints knew they'd need to make their move and they would get solid wins from Lannon, Karam, and Rodriguez. Lannon was a straight set winner over Prabhakar (7-6, 6-3), as was Rodriguez over Grieshaber (6-1, 6-2). Karam dropped the first set to Perry 3-6, but stormed back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-0 for the win.

Unfortunately for St. Lawrence, they were unable to tally that coveted final point, as Cross bested Moulin at the No. 1 spot 6-2, 6-3, followed by a win for the Yellowjackets from Beckmann, who topped Candice Vallejos

6-1, 6-4 at No. 6. In an exciting match at the No. 4 spot, Rochester earned the winning point as Della defeated senior Meg Terrien after dropping the opening set 6-0, coming back to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The loss completed the Saints' dual-match season, as the team finished with a 14-4 overall record. Head coach Jeremy Freeman and his squad will now prepare for the St. Lawrence University Spring Invitational, which is set to run from April 15-16.

SAINTS TOO MUCH FOR NAZARETH,

TOP GOLDEN FLYERS 9-0

Apr. 8: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team improved to 14-3 on the season with a convincing 9-0 win over the Nazareth Golden Flyers of the Empire 8 conference on Saturday in the Newell Field House.

The Saints win was truly a team effort, as only one set was dropped the entire day by the home team. Junior Anne Moulin teamed with sophomore Kirsten Lannon to defeat Rachel Leonard and Stephanie Parvan 8-3 at the top spot in double's competition. Although they won the opening point, the pairings of Teresa Rodriguez with Liz Karam and Meg Terrien with Candice Vallejos were also solid, winning their doubles matches to give

St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead heading into the single's matches.

Although the Golden Flyers would battle hard in the single's bracket, the Saints were too strong top-to-bottom, sweeping the remaining points to shut out Nazareth. Moulin topped Leonard at No. 1 in straight sets, followed by Lannon at No. 2, who came back after dropping the first set to Parvan to win the match 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.

Karam defeated Emily McAdoo in the No. 3 hole for the Saints, while Terrien took care of Besy O'Brien in straight sets as well 6-2, 6-4. Rodriguez and Vallejos completed the scoring, as Rodriguez bested Kathryn Cross 6-0, 6-0 and Vallejos, in her first match this spring, topped Danielle Carinci 6-3, 6-1.

The women's tennis team will not have time to celebrate their victory, however, as they must prepare for a Liberty League showdown with the University of Rochester on Sunday. The match will again be played in the Newell Field House.

NO.23 SAINTS READY TO MOVE UP IN
2005-2006

August 25: The No. 23 ranked Saints Women’s Tennis team is ready to move up the ITA rankings this season and improve on their 12-6 record from a year ago.

Losing just one senior, Liz Kelly, to graduation, the Saints return an experienced team in 2005-2006. Kelly, who captained the team last season, played at the No.4 singles spot and posted a 18-9 record. In doubles play, she paired with Courtney Ellis at No.2 and went 4-2; and with Anne Moulin at No.1 with a 10-6 record. Six seniors return for Head Coach Jeremy Freeman to help fill the leadership void left by Kelly’s graduation.

The senior class of Courtney Ellis, Hannah Kreizel, Emily Leibowitz, Kristie Martin, Meg Terrien, and Majken Tranby, has led the Saints to a 30-18 record over the last three seasons and brings experience and leadership to the team. Also returning for the Saints are juniors Denise Kyte and Anne Moulin, and sophomores Sara Bernier, Candice Vallejos, and Kirsten Lannon.

Ellis posts a 31-35 career singles record, including a 16-10 mark at No.3 in 2004-2005. Splitting time at No.5 and No.6, Terrien went 19-5 last season, and has a career singles record of 38-12. Moulin posted a 12-12 record at No.1 last season and has a career record of 31-18. Lannon jumped into the No.2 spot in her freshman season and posted a 17-7 mark.

Of the 14 players on the roster, nine players with singles experience return for the Saints. While carrying 14 players is more than usual for Coach Freeman, there is strength throughout the team. Among those 14 are three newcomers, Elizabeth Karam, Annalise Bricca, and Lindsay Abramo, with specific doubles experience. All three played in their state tournaments, with Karam twice winning the Pennsylvania Class AA doubles title. The potential of the first year players to help the Saints at doubles is strong.

The Saints, who finished 23 rd in the ITA Northeast rankings last season, are looking to make a move up in the rankings this season with a strong showing. The Liberty League is once again strong, with the Saints particularly looking forward to the match-ups with Hamilton and William Smith. Last season, St. Lawrence fell to both schools by 5-4 margins and are looking to avenge those losses.
