2004-2005 Archives FIVE SAINTS NAMED ITA SCHOLAR-ATHLETES August 24: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2005 ITA Scholar-Athletes. Courtney Ellis ’06 and Denise Kyte ‘07 of the women’s team were honored. As were Terran Palmer-Angell ’05, Mike Wiltshire ’06, and Amin Danai ’08 of the men’s team. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year). Over the past six seasons under Head Coach Jeremy Freeman, 15 Saints Tennis student-athletes have earned ITA Scholar-Athletes honors. This marks the second time that five Saints have earned the honor in one season. “St. Lawrence has been very successful over the years in bringing not just athletes but student-athletes to its campus,” said Coach Freeman. “The tennis program is no different. I am extremely proud of these five individuals and the example they set for their teammates and classmates.” Ellis and Kyte are two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete honorees, while Palmer-Angell is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete honoree. Ellis posts a career singles record of 31-35, including a 16-10 mark in 2004-2005. Kyte, after missing the majority of the 2004-2005 season due to injury, posts a career 16-4 singles record. Wiltshire has posted a 41-31 singles record in three seasons, including a 16-11 record last season. Palmer-Angell went 14-21 in singles play during his career with the Saints. In his rookie season, Danai posted a 7-12 singles record. SAINTS RANKED 23RD IN ITA FINAL RANKINGS June 16: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released the final rankings of the 2004-05 season this week. The Saints Women's Tennis Team was ranked 23rd in the Northeast Region. The Saints posted a 12-6 record on the season. MOULIN, LANNON, KELLY EARN NYSWCAA ALL-STATE HONORS Apr. 29: The NYSWCAA named its 2004-2005 Women's Tennis All-State Team today. Sophomore Anne Moulin, freshman Kirsten Lannon and senior Liz Kelly were all named to the team. Moulin earned First-Team All-State honors. Playing at #1 singles, she posted an 8-8 record and a 12-12 mark overall in singles play. She earned Liberty League all-conference honors in the fall and advanced to the quarterfinals at the NYSWCAA Tournament in October and to the semi-finals of the Wilson/ITA Northeast Tennis Championships in September as the No.7 seed. Lannon was earned Second-Team All-State honors. In the fall, she earned honorable mention Liberty League honors in singles and in doubles with Courtney Ellis. For the season, she went 17-7 in singles play, including a 14-3 mark at #2. In the fall, she paired with Ellis and went 11-5, including 9-2 at #2. Moulin and Kelly were named to the Doubles Honorable Mention Team. The pair also earned Liberty League Honorable Mention Doubles honors in the fall with a 10-6 record. Moulin and Kelly were seeded seventh in the doubles draw and also advanced to the semi-finals at ITAs.
SAINTS CAPTURE THREE TITLES AT WILLIAM SMITH TOURNAMENT Apr. 24: Junior Meg Terrien won the C flight singles bracket of the William Smith Tournament Sunday afternoon. Freshman Kirsten Lannon and sophomore Anne Moulin, the second seed, won the A flight doubles bracket and Terrien and freshman Candice Vallejos won the B flight doubles bracket as they Saints Women’s Tennis Team wrapped up its season. In A flight doubles, Lannon and Moulin defeated Kerry Farrell and Eri Yamakawa of New Paltz, 8-6, for the championship. The duo defeated Cohen and Walsh of Ithaca 8-1 in the opening round, then beat Patterson and Ware of host-William Smith, 8-3 to advance to the championship. In the C flight, Terrien and Vallejos handed the Herons an 8-6 loss to take top honors. The pair first defeated Howard and Porter of Geneseo 9-7, then Bermudez and Cali of Geneseo 8-1 to advance to the final. In the B flight doubles, Courtney Ellis and Liz Kelly, the No. 1 seed, fell to champion Cordes and Maier of William Smith in the semi-finals. In the C flight singles draw, No. 1 seed Terrien defeated the Hawks’ Larson 6-3, 6-0 to earn her second title of the day. On the way to the title, Terrien defeated Bermudez, Fitzpatrick of Union, and Gunderson of Ithaca. In the A flight, No. 3 seed Moulin fell in the second round to Amanda Husson of Cortland. Lannon fell to eventual champion Laurie Dorscheid of Cortland in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals of the B flight singles, St. Lawrence’s Courtney Ellis, seeded third, battled through a tight three-set match with No. 2 seed Tara Ware of William Smith, falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. Liz Kelly, the four seed in the B flight, fell to #1 Ashley Abar of Cortland in the semi-finals. Abar defeated Ware in the finals to take the title. VALLEJOS WINS AT SPRING INVITATIONAL Apr. 17: Freshman Candice Vallejos defeated teammate Sara Bernier to win the “C” singles bracket of the St. Lawrence Women’s Tennis Spring Invitational Sunday afternoon. Angela Tessoni of Nazareth won the “A” singles bracket, while Ashley Abar of Cortland won the “B” singles bracket. Vallejos won the first set against Bernier 7-5, but lost the second 6-4. She rebounded to win the third set and take the match with a 7-5 win in the final set. Bernier defeated Ithaca’s Rachel Gunderson 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. While Vallejos beat Cortland’s Jen Hemedinger 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the all SLU final. In the “A” singles bracket, Tessoni defeated teammate Andrea Gaddis 6-4, 6-3 for the win. In semifinal action, Tessoni defeated Laurie Dorscheid of Cortland 5-7, 6-4 (9-7). Gaddis beat Amanda Husson of Cortland 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the all Nazareth final. In the “B” singles bracket, Abar defeated SLU’s Meg Terrien 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 to win the bracket. Terrien had defeated Ithaca’s Liz Cohen 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. Abar had defeated SLU’s Liz Kelly 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal match. In doubles action, Dorscheid and Husson defeated SLU’s Kirsten Lannon and Anne Moulin 9-7 to win the “A” doubles bracket. In the “B” bracket, Hemedinger and Abar beat Eileen Slifer and Emily McAdoo of Nazareth 8-4 for the win. SAINTS IN SEMIFINAL, FINAL MATCHES AT SPRING INVITATIONALS Apr. 16: Four Saints Women’s Tennis players have advanced to the “B” and “C” semi-final matches of the St. Lawrence Spring Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Sammis Tennis Courts. In the doubles brackets, Kirsten Lannon and Anne Moulin advanced to the finals of the “A” Bracket. Play will conclude in the invitational on Sunday at the Sammis Tennis Courts beginning at 9:00 a.m. In the “A” singles bracket, Laurie Dorscheid of Cortland will face Angela Tessoni of Nazareth in the first semi-final match. In the second match, Andrea Gaddis, also of Nazareth , will face Amanda Husson, also of Cortland . Dorscheid defeated SLU’s Kirsten Lannon 7-5, 6-4 to advance. Tessoni defeated SLU’s Courtney Ellis 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the opening round and then Melissa Walsh of Ithaca , 6-0, 6-1 to advance. Gaddis beat Erin Chapman of Ithaca 6-3, 7-5 to advance. Husson beat SLU’s Anne Moulin 6-2, 6-2 to advance. In the “B” singles bracket, SLU’s Meg Terrien will face Ithaca ’s Liz Cohen in the first semi-final match. Terrien defeated Betsy O’Brien of Nazareth 6-2, 6-1 to advance. Cohen beat Eileen Slifer of Nazareth 7-5, 6-3 to move on. SLU’s Liz Kelly will face Cortland ’s Ashley Abar in the second semi-final match after defeating Katie Dempsey of Ithaca 6-1, 6-0. Abar beat Kelly’s teammate, Denise Kyte, 6-1, 6-0. In the “C” singles bracket, SLU’s Sara Bernier will face Ithaca ’s Rachel Gunderson in the first semi-final match. Bernier defeated Ithaca ’s Megan Keenan 7-6(7-4), 6-2 to advance. Gunderson defeated Kathryn Cross of Nazareth 6-0, 6-0 to move on. SLU’s Candice Vallejos will face Jen Hemedinger of Cortland in the second semi-final match. Vallejos beat Leah Leavitt of Ithaca 6-4, 6-1 to move on. Hemedinger beat Ellen Austin of Nazareth , 6-4, 6-4 to move on. In doubles action, Ellis and Kelly met Dorscheid and Husson in the first semi-final match of the “A” Bracket after defeating Tessoni and Kucheryavenko of Nazareth 8-3. Dorscheid and Husson won the match 9-8(3) to advance to the finals. In the second semi-final, Lannon and Moulin defeated O’Brien and Gaddis 8-5 to advance. In the “B” Bracket, Keenan and Dempsey faced Slifer and McAdoo in the first semi-final after beating SLU’s Terrien and Bernier 8-4. Slifer and McAdoo won the semi-final match 8-6 and will face Hemedinger and Abar in the finals. Hemedinger and Abar defeated Kyte and Vallejos 8-6 in the semi-finals. SAINTS SWEEP WEEKEND Apr. 9: The Saints Women’s Tennis Team defeated Rochester 5-4 and Nazareth 9-0 to sweep its weekend of play. The Saints improve to 10-4 on the season. Against the Yellowjackets on Friday afternoon, the Saints won at #2, 4,5, and 6 singles in addition to a victory at #2 doubles to take a 5-4 win in the match. Kirsten Lannon defeated Shivani Kumar at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-3 for the Saints. Liz Kelly, Meg Terrien and Denise Kyte won at 4, 5, and 6 singles for St. Lawrence. In doubles action, Kelly and Courtney Ellis won at #2 over Alexa Perry and Tessa Baker, 8-5 to lead the Saints to victory. On Saturday, the Saints swept Nazareth to take a 9-0 win. Anne Moulin defeated Andrea Gaddis 6-2, 6-4 at #1 singles. Lannon beat Angela Tessoni 1-6, 6-4 (10-4) to win at #2. Ellis defeated Ann Kucheryavenko 6-2, 4-6 (10-8) at #3. At #4, Kelly defeated Betsy O’Brien 6-4, 6-2 and Terrien won at #5 Eileen Slifer 6-1, 6-0 at #5. At no. 6 singles, Kyte defeated Emily McAdoo 6-4, 6-1 for the win. In doubles action, Lannon/Moulin won at #1 over Gaddis/O’Brien 8-5. Ellis/Kelly won at #2 over Kucheryavenko/Kathryn Cross 8-4. Kyte and Candice Vallejos defeated McAdoo/Ellen Austin 8-0 at #3 doubles. SAINTS GO 2-2 IN SOUTH CAROLINA Mar. 23: The Saints Women’s Tennis Team (10-6) went 2-2 on their annual trip to Hilton Head, S.C. over spring break. St. Lawrence earned wins over Transylvania and the College of Wooster. In their first match outdoors since last fall, the Saints fell to Calvin College 7-2. Freshman Kirsten Lannon won at #2 singles for the Saints 6-3, 7-5. Candice Vallejos and Courtney Ellis paired for a win at #3 doubles 8-4 over Logan/Bennett. The Saints responded with a 9-0 win the next day over Translyvania. Coach Jeremy Freeman was pleased with the strong showing from every player on the team. St. Lawrence then faced a strong Denison team, ranked eighth in the nation by the ITA. Once again it was a good showing by the team, especially from junior Meg Terrien. Playing at the #6 spot, Terrien took her opponent to a superbreaker before losing the match. The Saints closed out their trip with a 6-3 win over the College of Wooster. The match had to be spread out over two days due to the number of courts. The women played at the same time as the men on just four courts. They were able to play #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 singles before calling it a day. Lannon, Ellis and Liz Kelly won at #2, 3, and 4 respectively. Terrien won at #6 the following day. In doubles action, Anne Moulin and Lannon won at #1 doubles (8-5) and Vallejos and Ellis won at #3 (9-7) SAINTS CONTINUE SUCCESS IN 2004 After starting the season 5-1, including a five-match win streak, the Saints women’s tennis team finished the fall season with an 8-4 record. St. Lawrence earned a fifth seed at the Liberty League Tournament and wrapped the season with wins over Union and Rochester at the Tournament. The Saints held six of their opponents scoreless this season, including nearby Potsdam and Clarkson. Head Coach Jeremy Freeman, in his sixth season with the Saints, earned his first-ever win over Ithaca, when the Saints defeated the Bombers 6-3 on the road. Another key win for the Saints was a 5-4 victory at Cortland, the day after beating Ithaca. The Saints will have a nontraditional season in the spring as they begin working towards the 2005 season. MOULIN, ELLIS, KELLY, LANNON EARN LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS Nov. 17: Sophomore Anne Moulin earned Liberty League All-Conference Singles honors on Wednesday. Playing at the #1 spot, she was 6-4, with an overall record of 9-6. Freshman Kirsten Lannon was named to the Liberty League Honorable Mention Singles team. She posted a 9-2 record at the #2 singles spot for the Saints. Overall, Lannon posted a 10-4 record. Moulin and senior Liz Kelly and Lannon and junior Courtney Ellis were named to the Liberty League All-Conference Honorable Mention Doubles Team. Moulin and Kelly posted a 8-4 record at the #1 doubles spot and an overall record of 10-6. Lannon and Ellis finished at 9-2 in the #2 spot, with an overall record of 11-5.
Oct. 16: Sophomore Anne Moulin, junior Courtney Ellis and senior Liz Kelly fell in the quarterfinals of the NYSWCAA Women's Tennis Championships Saturday afternoon. Moulin lost to Debbie Sharnak of Vassar, the #2 seed in the first singles flight, 6-2, 6-1. Ellis fell to Shalini Sudarsanan of Geneseo 6-4, 7-5 in the second singles flight. Kelly was beaten by the #4 seed, Ashely Abar of Cortland, in the quarterfinals of the third singles flight, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles action, Ellis and freshman Kirsten Lannon, seeded fourth in the second doubles flight, fell to Burks and Will of Vassar 8-0. Juniors Kristie Martin and Meg Terrien lost to fourth-seeded Abar and Hemedinger of Cortland in the third doubles flight. MOULIN, ELLIS AND KELLY ADVANCE AT NYSWCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Oct. 15: Sophomore Anne Moulin, junior Courtney Ellis and senior Liz Kelly all won their opening round matches at the NYSWCAA Women's Tennis Championships to advance to the quarterfinals. Competition continues on Saturday at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y. Moulin, playing in the first singles flight, defeated Jennifer Sussman of NYU 6-3, 6-1. She will meet the #2 seeded Debbie Sharnak of Vassar in the quarterfinals. Freshman Kirsten Lannon, seeded fourth, fell in the opening round of the second singles flight to Kelly Farrell of New Paltz 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. Ellis beat Ann Kucheryavenko of Nazareth 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the opening round of the third singles flight. She will face Shalini Sudarsanan of Geneseo in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Anne Moulin and senior Liz Kelly won 8-6 over Colleen Cross and Alexa Perry at the #1 doubles position. Freshman Kirsten Lannon and junior Courtney Ellis followed up with an 8-4 win over Shivani Kumar and Dana Sall at the #2 spot. Juniors Meg Terrien and Kristie Martin wrapped up the doubles play with a 9-7 win over Tessa Baker and Jaymi Della at #3. In singles action, Ellis downed Perry at the #3 spot 6-3, 6-3. And Terrien won at #5 over Baker 6-2, 6-1. The Saints return to action next weekend at the NYSWCAA Tournament hosted by Cornell. SAINTS SPLIT AT LIBERTY LEAGUE TOURNAMENT Oct. 9: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team (7-4) was seeded fifth for the Liberty League Tournament this weekend. The Saints squared off against fourth-seeded William Smith in the quarterfinals. William Smith prevailed in the match 5-3. Freshman Kirsten Lannon and junior Courtney Ellis won the lone doubles match for the Saints at the #2 spot. They defeated Crystal Cordes and Laura Maier 8-4. In singles action, Lannon and junior Meg Terrien won the lone singles matches for St. Lawrence. Lannon dispatched of Karen Newbury at the #2 spot 6-2, 6-2. Terrien won at the #5 spot over Katie Campbell 7-5, 6-2. The Saints then moved to the consolation bracket where they faced the number eight seed, Union Dutchwomen. St. Lawrence shutout Union 5-0. Freshman Anne Moulin and senior Liz Kelly downed Jennie Werts and Meg Vercillo 8-5 at the #1 doubles position. Lannon and Ellis won their second doubles match over Risa Dubow and Lisa Keary 8-4. Juniors Kristie Martin and Terrien won at the #3 position 8-3 over Stiles and Elizabeth Johnson. In singles action, Lannon and Kelly won their matches at #2 and #4 respectively. Lannon defeated Vercillo 6-1, 6-3 and Kelly downed Dubow 6-1, 6-0. SAINTS BLANK PLATTSBURGH, 9-0 Oct. 5: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team improved to 6-3 on the season with a 9-0 blanking of Plattsburgh Tuesday afternoon. This marks the Saints fourth shutout this season. Anne Moulin and Liz Kelly dominated at the #1 doubles spot in a 8-0 win over Brit Montmeat and Angela Roy. Kirsten Lannon and Courtney Ellis disposed of Megan Pellam and Amanda Oliver 8-1 at the #2 doubles spot. At the #3 doubles spot, Meg Terrien and Kristie Martin easily defeated Ashley Smith and Julie Salar 8-1. In singles action, the Saints won all six matches without losing a set. At the #1 spot, Moulin bested Smith 6-0, 6-1. Lannon won against Montmeat 6-3, 7-6(6). Ellis won at the #3 spot, beating Roy 6-0, 6-2. Kelly defeated Pellam at the #4 without surrendering a game, 6-0, 6-0. Terrien won easily at the #5 spot over Oliver, 6-0, 6-1. And at the #6 spot, Candice Vallejos shutout Salar 6-0, 6-0. The Saints return to action this weekend at the Liberty League Championships hosted by the University of Rochester. Competition begins on Saturday and will continue on Sunday. SAINTS LOSE TO WILLIAM SMITH, 4-5 Oct. 2: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team lost another heartbreaker today at home against William Smith, losing 4-5. With the loss, the Saints move to 5-3 on the year. Courtney Ellis and Kirsten Lannon were the only Saints to win a doubles match today, winning 9-8 (7-5). Anne Moulin and Liz Kelly teamed in a loss of 8-2; Meg Terrien and Candice Vallejos lost 8-4. Moulin, Lannon, and Ellis all won singles matches at 7-6, 6-0; 7-5, 6-3; and 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, respectively. Kelly, Terrien, and Kristie Martin all lost singles matches today with scores of 6-1, 6-3; 6-3, 6-2; and 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, respectively. The Saints will be back in action Oct. 5th versus Plattsburgh at home at 4:00 p.m. SLU DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO HAMILTON, 4-5 Oct. 1: Anne Moulin and Liz Kelly combined to beat the number one pair from Hamilton Friday night 8-3. Courtney Ellis and Kirsten Lannon lost 9-5, and Kristie Martin and Hannah Kreizel were defeated 8-2. In singles play, Lannon, Ellis, and Meg Terrien were all successful, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-4; 6-2, 6-0; and 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-5, respectively. Moulin, Kelly, and Martin were defeated 6-0, 6-0; 7-5, 5-7, 6-2; and 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, respectively. The Saints return to action Saturday, October 2nd at 1:00 p.m. versus William Smith. MOULIN ADVANCES IN SINGLES AND DOUBLES AT ITA Sept. 23: Sophomore Anne Moulin and senior Liz Kelly have been seeded for the ITA Northeast Regional this weekend at William Smith College. Moulin, who is 4-2 this season, has been seeded seventh in the singles bracket. Her only two losses this season have been to Whitney Dolan of Skidmore and Laura Dorscheid of Cortland. Dolan is seeded second and Dorscheid is seeded sixth. Moulin will meet Sara Goldstein of SUNY New Paltz in the first round. Moulin and doubles partner Liz Kelly earned a seed in the doubles bracket. They are listed as a seven seed, but the fifth through the eighth seeds were too close to distinguish, so they were listed alphabetically. Moulin and Kelly are 4-2 this season at the #1 spot. Their two losses have been to Pauli/Dolan of Skidmore and Arjomand/Chapman of Ithaca. Pauli/Dolan are ranked second in the doubles bracket. Arjomand/Chapman is competing, but are not seeded. Moulin and Kelly will meet Salierno/Tomesko of Montclair State. Also competing for St. Lawrence will be Courtney Ellis and Kirsten Lannon. Ellis will meet Yamazaki of the College of New Jersey in the first round. Lannon will square off against K. Mizgala of Brockport. Ellis and Lannon, 4-1 this season in doubles, will meet Cross/Perry of Rochester in the first round of doubles action. Sept. 22: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season with a dominating 9-0 win over host-Clarkson Wednesday afternoon. After starting out the season with a loss to Skidmore, the Saints have won five straight. St. Lawrence started out strong with three doubles wins. Anne Moulin and Liz Kelly defeated Shannon Hopkins and Katelyn Hendryx at the #1 spot 8-4. Kristi Martin and Hannah Kreizel won at the #2 spot over Meghan Jones and Rebecca Riner 8-2. And at the #3 spot, Candice Vallejos and Emily Leibowitz shutout Kristen Phillipson and Elena Babichenko 8-0. In singles action, the Saints continued their domination. Moulin defeated Hopkins at the #1 spot 6-2, 6-3. Kirsten Lannon surrendered just one set to Hendryx at the #2 spot, winning 6-1, 6-0. Courtney Ellis defeated Jones at the#3 spot 6-2, 6-0. Kelly, Meg Terrien and Martin won the final three matches without losing a set to their opponents. Kelly blanked Riner at #4 6-0, 6-0. Terrien repeated the feat at #5, beating Phillipson 6-0, 6-0. And at the #6 spot, Martin bested Babichenko 6-0, 6-0. The Saints return to action this weekend at William Smith for the ITA Northeast Regional. Competition begins on Friday, September 24 and continues through Sunday, September 26. ELLIS, KELLY RALLY, SAINTS TIP CORTLAND 5-4 Sept. 11: Courtney Ellis and Liz Kelly both came back from first set losses for three-set victories in key matches as the Saint women's tennis team completed a 3-0 week with a 5-4 victory at Cortland State on Saturday. Ellis lost the first set to Andrea Terbush 3-6, but came back with 6-1 and 6-2 wins and Kelly dropped a 2-6 first set against Meredith McCasin, but rallied to win the match with 6-1 and 6-4 wins in the next two sets. Meg Terrien added a 6-0, 6-1 win at fifth singles and Kristie Martin won 6-1, 6-3 at sixth singles as the Saints won four of the six singles matches to go with a doubles win by Kelly and Anne Moulin for the overall match victory. Kelly amd Moulin beat Laurie Dorscheid and Amanda Husson 8-6 at first doubles, but Cortland came back with wins as Meredith McCaslin and Andrea TerBush beat Ellis and Kirsten Lannon 8-4 at second doubles and Jen Hemedinger and Stephanie Reynolds beat Martin and Terrien 9-8 at second doubles. Dorscheid beat Moulin 6-1, 6-3 at first singles and Husson beat Lannon 6-3, 6-3 at second singles before the Saints swept the remaining singles matches. The Saints improved to 4-1 on the season with their fourth straight win while Cortland, now 2-1, sustained its first loss. SAINTS DEFEAT BOMBERS 6-3 Sept. 10: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team improved to 3-1 with a 6-3 win over the Ithaca Bombers (0-1) Friday night. This is the first win for the Saints over Ithaca under Head Coach Jeremy Freeman, now in his sixth season. The Bombers are ranked 15th in the Northeast by the ITA, just ahead of the 16th ranked Saints. The Saints started out slow, losing two of three doubles matches but rebounded to win five of six singles matches to earn the win. St.Lawrence surrendered points to an opponent for the first time in three matches, having won the last two by 9-0. Freshman Kirsten Lannon and junior Courtney Ellis won the lone doubles match for St.Lawrence at the #2 spot. The duo defeated Melissa Walsh and Elizabeth Cohen 8-1. Sophomore Anne Moulin and senior Liz Kelly fell 8-3 at the #1 spot and freshmen Candice Vallejos and Sara Bernier lost at #3 8-1. In singles action, Moulin defeated Narguess Arjomand 6-1, 7-5 at #1. Lannon won at #2 over Walsh 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Ellis dispatched of Erin Chapman 6-0, 6-1 at #3. Kelly downed Cohen at #4, 6-4, 6-0. Terrien blasted Katie Dempsey 6-1, 6-0 at #5. Kristie Martin fell at #6 6-7, 6-4, 10-3 to Megan Keenan. The Saints return to action Saturday morning at Cortland (2-0). SAINTS DOMINATE IN 9-0 WIN OVER POTSDAM Sept. 8: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team (2-1) dominated the Potsdam Bears (0-1) 9-0 in a match moved into Newell Field House in Canton, N.Y. because of the weather. This marks the second straight match the Saints have won by the score 9-0. Sept. 5: The St. Lawrence women's tennis team (1-1) opened its 2004 season with a split, falling to Skidmore 8-1 and then rebounding by blanking Union 9-0. Against Skidmore on Saturday, junior Courtney Ellis and freshman Kirsten Lannon paired at the #2 doubles spot defeated Jill Damon/Jenny Grabler 8-2 to score for the Saints. Sophomore Anne Moulin and senior Liz Kelly fell at the #1 spot 8-1 to Whitney Dolan/Maddie Pauli. Juniors Meg Terrien and Kristi Martin lost at the #3 doubles spot to Gabby Rosenthal/Kyra Travis 8-1. The Saints bounced back on Sunday to shutout the Union Dutchwomen 9-0. Moulin/Kelly downed Jennie Werts/Lisa Keary 8-6 at the #1 doubles. At #2, Lannon/Ellis downed Meg Vercillo/Jen Lauroesch 8-2. Martin/Terrien prevailed over Kelly Fitzpatrick/Liz Johnson 8-5 at #3. In singles action, Moulin defeated Werts 6-3, 6-2 at #1 and at #2 Lannon downed Keary 6-1, 6-0. Ellis dispatched Vercillo 7-5, 6-1 at #3 and at #4 Kelly downed Lauroesch 6-4, 6-2. Terrien won at #5 against Risa Dubow 6-0, 6-0 and Martin won at #6 against Alex Valentie 6-2, 6-0. St. Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday, September 8 at Potsdam. KURVINK JOINS SAINTS TENNIS STAFF Aug. 26: David D. Kurvink has joined the St. Lawrence University coaching staff as an assistant coach for the men's and women's tennis teams. Kurvink is a 2003 graduate of Moravian College and was a four-time all-conference tennis player. He was named team MVP and captain in both his junior and senior seasons and posted the second highest win total in school history with a record of 50-17. After spending a year at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy, Kurvink is now a USPTR teaching professional and has worked extensively in a variety of international training academies.
