2002-2003 Archives KELLY, TERRIEN, JENKINS AND RAPPOLI LEAD SAINTS AT WILLIAM SMITH April 27 - Liz Kelly and Meg Terrien advanced to the semifinal round of singles draws, and Steelie Jenkins and Maddie Rappoli advanced to the championship of the “B” Flight Doubles Draw at the William Smith Tennis Tournament to lead St. Lawrence over the weekend. Kelly defeated Patti Dromms of Brockport 8-1 in the first round, then handled Ithaca’s Angie Tennis 8-3 in the quarterfinals before losing to top-seed Laura Maier of William Smith 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinal round in the “B” Flight Singles Draw. Terrien defeated Union’s Aimee Talleur 8-5 in the first round of the “C” Flight Singles Draw, then beat William Smith’s Kristin Dowling 8-0 in the quarterfinals before losing to No. 2 seed Jennifer Neumann of New Paltz in the semifinals. Jenkins and Rappoli defeated Stephanie Cali and Mallory Schepis of Brockport 8-4, then handled the top seeded duo of Sophie Giret and Megan Crevioserat of New Paltz 8-3 before losing to Union’s Megan Denefrio and Jennifer Lauroesch 8-2 in the “B” Flight Doubles Draw championship match. The Saints have concluded their spring season, and finished with a 5-9 record and several impressive performances in spring tournaments. NIGH AND KELLY TEAM UP TO WIN TOURNAMENT TITLE April 12 - Nazareth won four of the six draws at the five-team St. Lawrence Women’s Tennis invitational on Sunday afternoon. St. Lawrence’s Johnna Nigh and Liz Kelly won the doubles “A” title, beating Cortland’s Kristen Grasso and Laurie Dorscheid 9-7 in the championship round. Dorscheid claimed the singles “A” title with a 6-0, 6-2 win over St. Lawrence’s Courtney Ellis. Nazareth's Carly Slaughter won the “B” championship with a 6-1, 6-3 win over St. Lawrence’s Maddie Rappoli, and Beth Cheluse also won for Nazareth, claiming the “C” singles title. Slaughter and Chelus combined to claim the “B” doubles title, and Angela Tessoni and Robin Medina defeated St. Lawrence’s Graham Robinson and Hannah Kreizel 8-5 to with the “C” doubles draw. SAINTS SWEPT TO CLOSE SPRING TRIP March 21, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team haS returned from their spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. after being swept in their final match over the break. The Saints were defeated by Hope 9-0. Annelise Fox, Priya Malviya, Jennifer Coleman and Kortney DeVito won at singles and doubles for Hope. The women’s team, 5-9 on the season, will face Rensselaer in a dual match this weekend in Troy. SAINTS LOSE SECOND SPRING MATCH TO ILLINOIS WESLEYAN March 19, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team has dodged tornado warnings and driving rain, but did manage to get in a match against Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday as the Titans beat St. Lawrence 7-2. Courtney Ellis led St. Lawrence, winning at second singles 6-3, 6-2 over Deb Bartel. Elizabeth Jenkins and Maddie Rappoli earned the Saints other point with an 8-4 win at first doubles. Erika Herrin, Lindy Wick and Jane Szfranice each won at both singles and doubles for the Titans. The Saints, now 5-8 on the year, were forced to cancel their match with East Stroudsburg, but hope to get a match against Hope in on Friday. SAINTS OPEN SPRING TRIP WITH WIN March 18, 2003 - The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team got off to a good start on their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head with a 9-0 win over Villa Julia on Tuesday morning. Both the men’s and women’s teams had matches postponed due to rain on Monday. Johnna Nigh defeated Lindsay Cole 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, and Nigh and Elizabeth Kelly won at first singles, beating Cole and Allison Yau 8-1. Maddie Rappoli and Meg Terrien were also double winners for the Saints. Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams have five matches scheduled for the Spring Break trip. SAINTS FINISH 11TH AT NYSWCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS October 21, 2002-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team placed 11th at the 2002 New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Tennis Championships this past weekend. Maddie Rappoli advanced to the quarterfinals of fourth singles and teamed with Elizabaeth Jenkins to make it to the semifinals of the third doubles bracket. Rapolli and Jenkins were seeded third in their doubles bracket and showed the competition why. They defeated Avconti and Newbury of William Smith, 9-7, in the first round. The team then rolled by Arohoff and Kravis of Rochester with a n easy 8-2 in to advance to the semifinals. Eventual champions Ubero and Robinette of Vassar knocked off the Saint team 8-1 in the semifinals, but not before they earned four valuable team points. In singles, Rapolli defeated Liz Cole of St. John Fisher 6-2, 6-2, before losing in the quarterfinals to second-ranked Christine Gale of Skidmore, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. SAINTS FINISH SEVENTH IN UCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (October 13, 2002)-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis went into this weekend's Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships seeded seventh, and that's exactly where they finished after losses to Skidmore and Rochester and a win over Union. Vassar, the top seed, won the tournament by defeating Skidmore, the second seeded team, as St. Lawrence also played host. Damp weather plagued the championship, driving every match but one into Newell Field House. St. Lawrence opened the tournament with Skidmore, dropping a 7-0 decision in a match played to decision. The Saints had a chance to rebound against Rochester as they headed into the doubles portion of the match at 4-2. Maddie Rappoli at number four and Meg Terrien at six both registered two set wins in singles, Terrien with a dominating effort to win 6-0, 6-0. Rappoli took her match 6-4, 6-1. However, the Yellowjackets took two doubles, 8-1, to dash the Saint hopes. St. Lawrence headed into the seventh-place match against six-seed Union who had lost their first match to William Smith and then were upset against eighth-seeded Rensselaer. The Saints came out firing, winning in second and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles. Lara Kimble and Courtney Ellis were winners at two, 8-2, while Elizabeth Jenkins and Rappoli teamed at three to win 8-3. Ellis carried the momentum into singles, beating Meg Vercillo at two, 6-2, 6-2. Elizabeth Kelly won at three singles, 6-3, 6-2, against Jen Lauroesch, and Lara Kimble picked a great time to get her first win of the season, taking out Aimee Tallour, 6-1, 6-1, at five singles. Terrien picked up her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-1, decision at six singles against Polina Shcherbatov. The Saints will compete at next weekends New York State Tournament hosted by Cornell. SAINTS SNAP TWO-MATCH SKID WITH WIN OVER PLATTSBURGH CANTON, N.Y. (October 8, 2002)The St. Lawrence University womens tennis team snapped a two-match skid with a 7-2 win over Plattsburgh at Sammis Tennis Center on Tuesday evening. Maddie Rappoli and Elizabeth Jenkins improved their doubles record to 4-1, cruising to an 8-2 win at three-doubles. The match opened with an unusual result at two-doubles. The Plattsburgh team of Kathy Stata and Brit Montmea ended up taking the match over Courtney Ellis and Lara Kimble, but not before the tie-breaker went 38 points, with the Cardinals winning 20-18. Johnna Nigh and Elizabeth Kelly won at one doubles, 8-6, over Katie DeCoursey and Barbara Kosowsky. Jenkins and Rappoli were 8-2 winners over Julie Slattery and Megan Pellam. In singles, St. Lawrence won every match with the exception of four singles. Nigh at one-singles and Meg Terrien at six-singles had the easiest wins. Nigh was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over DeCoursey while Terrien was nearly perfect in a 6-0, 6-1 win against Pellam. Ellis took the two-match, 6-4, 6-2, against Kosowsky while Kelly won 6-3, 6-4 against Stata. Kimble won 6-1, 6-2, against Montmea for her first win of the season at five singles. Slattery was the lone winner in singles for the Cardinals, taking a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Rappoli at number-four. The Saints will host the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association tournament this weekend, entering with a record of 3-5. SAINTS FALL TO WILLIAM SMITH (October 5, 2002)-Williams Smith took every match except for six single on their way to an 8-1 win in UCAA women's tennis action at Sammis Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Meg Terrien was the Saitns lone winner, taking K. Dowling at six singles, 6-4, 6-2. Every other match went just two sets as the Herons rolled to the win over the Saints. St. Lawrence's next action will be on Tuesday, October 8, as they host Plattsburgh in a 4:00 p.m. match. HAMILTON HOLDS OFF SAINT RALLY (October 4, 2002)The St. Lawrence University womens tennis dropped a 6-3 decision against Hamilton at Sammis Tennis Courts in Canton on Friday evening. The Saints fell behind after doubles 2-1, but rallied to make it a one-point game, 4-3, with two games remaining. However, the Continentals slowed the St. Lawrence momentum and took those final two points to escape with the 6-3 win. Liz Kelly improved her season record to 3-4, defeating Jen Lynch at three singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Maddie Rappoli, improved to 3-5 with a win at four singles over Elizabeth Fazio, 6-3, 6-0. The doubles team of Courtney Ellis and Hannah Kreizel won their three doubles match, 8-3. In singles, Lindsey Schantz outlasted the Saints Johnna Nigh at one singles, 6-0, 6-2 while Continental Kaitie Donovan took out Ellis, 6-1, 6-0, at two singles. Lara Kimble lost in a super tie-breaker at five singles to Kate Borne, 6-7 (3), 6-3, (10-8) and Saint Meg Terrien fell in two sets, 6-2, 6-4, to Callen Sterling. At one doubles, Schantz and Donovan were winners over Nigh and Kelly, 8-3, while Lynch and Borne took out Rappoli and Jenkins, 8-1. The Saints next match is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, October 5, as they host William Smith at 1:00 p.m. THREE SAINTS ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND OF ITA CHAMPIONSHIP September 29, 2002-Elizabeth Kelly, Johnna Nigh and Maddie Rappoli all advanced to the second round of singles action at the 2002 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Regional Championship hosted by William Smith. Kelly took an 8-3 win over Amy Orapello of Brockport State in the top half of the draw. In the bottom half, Nigh won 8-2 over Heather Spann of Ithaca while Rappli won against Meredith McCaslin of Cortland State, 8-6. All three lost their second round matches with Nigh falling to Megan Hayes of NYU in three sets. Nigh won the first set, 2-6, but lost the second set 6-1 and the super tie-breaker 10-7. Courtney Ellis lost her first round match to Meghan Carroll from Ithaca. In doubles, Kelly and Nigh fell in the first round to Dolan and Fuleihan of Skidmore 8-4 while Rappoli and Jenkins had a tough draw, playing the number-two seed of Kunigiel and Penniston of Skidmore, 8-1. SAINTS SWEEP NORTH COUNTRY RIVAL CLARKSON September 25, 2002St. Lawrence University won every point on the way to a 9-0 sweep of Clarkson University in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association tennis match at Sammis Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints improve to 2-3 with the win and are 1-2 in the UCAA this season. The Saints started the match with a sweep of the doubles action. Johnna Nigh and Elizabeth Kelly won at one doubles, 8-4, Elizabeth Jenkins (above, left) and Maddie Rappoli won at two doubles, 8-1, and the team of Courtney Ellis and Hannah Kreizel won at the three doubles 8-3. The Saints dominance continued into singles where Ellis, Kelly, Rappoli and Meg Terrien won in two sets and none lost more than two games in a set. Nigh took three sets to knock off Maura Tutty at number-one, eventually winning 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. Jenkins also needed three sets to win over Kathryn Cyr at number-six singles, coming back after losing the first 4-6, to win the next two 6-0 and a super tie-breaker 10-8 for the third set. St. Lawrence will head to the ITA Tournament this weekend hosted by William Smith. SAINTS FALL IN A TIGHT MATCH AGAINST ITHACA September 15-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team won all three doubles matches against Ithaca on Saturday afternoon, but got only one win in singles action falling to the Bombers, 5-4. Three of the singles matches could have went either way, but home court advantage won out for Ithaca. St. Lawrence jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the doubles matches. The team of Johnna Nigh and Elizabeth Kelly went up 7-2 at the one-doubles match before closing ith with an 8-6 win. At number two doubles, Courtney Ellis and Lara Kimble took an 8-3 win while Elizabeth Jenkins and Maddi Rappoli took three singles by the same score to improve to 3-1 this season. However, in singles Meg Terrien was the only Saint who managed to take a point, winning 6-3, 6-1 at six-singles over Angela Tennis. Nigh fell at one singles, 6-1, 6-3 to Meghan Carroll and Elizabeth Kelly fell victim to Gretchen Fisher, 6-1, 6-2, at three singles. Ellis played tough at two-singles falling 6-4, 6-4, as did Rappoli and Kimble at three and five-singles. Rappoli fell 6-4, 6-3, while Kimble suffered a 6-3, 6-4, loss. St. Lawrence falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss. Their next match is scheduled for Wednesday, September 25, when they host North Country rival Clarkson University in a 4:00 p.m. match. SAINTS TAKE OUT POTSDAM FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON September 11--The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team notched their first win of the fall season, knocking off North Country rival Postdam 5-4 at Sammis Tennis Courts on Wednesday evening. The match was originally scheduled to take place at Potsdam, but due to weather it was switched to St. Lawrence. The Saints took two of the three doubles matches and split the singles matches with the Bears, three matches each. Saint Junior Johnna Nigh teamed with first-year student Courtney Ellis to defeat Potsdam's Rachel Nesenoff and Teshia Hutt, 8-5, in first doubles. Junior Elizabeth Jenkins and first-year student Maddie Rappoli won at two doubles, 8-4, over Kristina Koncewicz. Lauren Olivari and Jamie Sico took out the Saints team of seniors Abby Martin and Virginia Ryan, 8-6. In singles action, St. Lawrence won the 4-6 matches to take the match 5-4. first-year student Meg Terrien got her first collegiate win, 6-0, 6-1, at four singles over Hutt while Jenkins and Ryan both registered 6-0, 6-2, wins at four and five singles, respectively. Nigh led her match at one singles, 6-4, 5-4, before having to retire due to injury, giving Olivari and Potsdam the point. Nesenoff prevailed in a three-set marathon at two singles over Ellis, 7-6 (3), 4-6, (10-8). Koncewicz won at three singles, 6-4, 6-4. With the win, St. Lawrence improves to 1-2 on the young season while the Bears fall to 0-3. The Saints next match is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, as they travel south on I-81 to take on Ithaca in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match. SAINTS DROP TWO ON OPENING WEEKEND September 8, 2002-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team dropped a pair of conference matches to open the season, falling at Union, 6-3, and Skidmore, 8-1. The Saints featured a young lineup with three first-year students in the lineup on the weekend. On Friday at Union, the Saints took an early match lead, winning two of three doubles matches. Courtney Ellis, on of the first-year students, teamed with sophomore Lara Kimble to win at number-two doubles, 9-7. Sophomore Elizabeth Jenkins and first-year student Maddie Rappoli took the three-doubles match by the same score. In singles action against the Dutchwomen, Ellis registered the only Saint point, beating Steph Middleton, 6-0, 6-2. Rappoli went three sets against Megann Denefrio in her match at four-singles, eventually dropping the match, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. On Saturday, perennial UCAA and NCAA power Skidmore handed St. Lawrence an 8-1 loss. Jenkins and Rappoli earned the Saints lone point, taking third-doubles 9-7. The Saints are now 0-2 on the season. Their next match is slated for Wednesday, September 11 as they travel down Route 11 to take on Potsdam at 4:30 p.m.
