2001-2002 Archives SAINTS HOST 2002 WOMEN'S TENNIS INVITATIONAL
In the A singles, Saint number-one Johnna Nigh went 1-1, winning her first match over Jen Beekman of Ithaca in three sets, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5, (10-4) before losing in two sets to eventual A bracket winner Lauren Stellato of Union, 6-4, 6-2. Liz Kelly also went 1-1 in the A bracket, taking out Meg Vercillo of Union in the first round, 6-4, 4-6, (10-4), before dropping her second round match to the three-seed, Meghan Carroll of Ithaca, 6-2, 6-2. Diana Harmann of William Smith won the B singles bracket when she defeated teammate Kelly Randall, 6-3, 6-3 in the championship. Lara Kimble went 2-1 in the bracket, taking a three set win over Ithaca's Gretchen Fisher in her first round match and then defeating Danna Brumberger of Union in the second round in three sets. Kimble was finally knocked out of the competition in the semifinals as Randall won 6-2, 6-3. Abby Martin lost her second round match to Harmann and then lost a consolation match to Annie Rutter of Union. In C singles, the Saints' Tammy Klein and Virginia Ryan both won their first round matches while Graham Robinson lost in the first round. Klein was victorious over Amanda Bernard of William Smith, dropping the first set 0-6 before taking the last two 7-6 (7-5) and (10-8). Ryan was a winner against Union's Polina Shcherbatov, 6-2, 6-3, before falling against C champion Sarah Muhlbauer of Nazareth. All three St. Lawrence doubles teams suffered defeat in the first round of action in the doubles brackets while William Smith took all three flights. Crystal Cordes and Molly Patterson teamed for the A bracket title, Randall and Lisa Yaguchi took the B flight and Harmann and Laura Maier won the C title. The Saints final action of the school year is this weekend as they travel to the William Smith tournament on Saturday and Sunday. SAINTS COMPETE IN MIDDLEBURY INVITATIONAL (April 8): The women's tennis team joined nine other teams in competing in the 12th Annual Middlebury Invitational over the weekend. Several Saint players competed in both singles and doubles matches throughout the tournament. Johnna Nigh received a first round bye in Flight A singles, but lost in the second round 6-1, 6-0 to Joanna Kahn of the University of Vermont. Wendy Glawischnig suffered an opening round loss in Flight A singles, while Alexa Brazilian and Abby Martin each suffered opening round losses in Flight B singles. In Flight C singles, Meredith Potter earned a first round bye and then defeated William Smith's Erin McNamara 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of play. She lost to Elizabeth Meyers of Middlebury 6-0, 6-0 in the third round. Kate Loring, who also competed in Flight C singles, was defeated in the opening round. In doubles action, Johnna Nigh and Alexa Brazilian were defeated by Mary Moore and Lindsey Hicks of Nazareth in the opening round. The Abby Martin/Meredith Potter duo received a first round bye before bowing to Linda Cappwell and Jane Siegel of Middlebury in the second round. Jen Giller and Kate Loring reached the semifinals in third doubles. They defeated Hamilton's Lizzie Fazio and Sarah Taylor 8-4 in the opening round and went on to defeat Stacey Gordon and Megan McKenna of Cortland 8-4 in the quarterfinal match. In the semifinals, they suffered a 8-3 loss to Middlebury's Whitney MacDonald and Nina Popel. WOMEN'S TENNIS RETURNS FROM MIDDLEBURY TOURNAMENT April 7, 2002-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team competed in the Middlebury Women's Tennis Invitational, an individual tournament, over the past weekend. Johnna Nigh advanced to the second round of A Singles with a three-set win, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, win over a player from Nazareth. Nigh fell in the third round in two sets. Also in A Singles, Liz Kelly dropped her first round match in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. In B Singles, Lara Kimble, who joined the team in the spring semester, dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision in the first round. Abby Martin received a bye in the first round before falling in two sets in the second round. Tammy Klein and Virginia Ryan both lost in two sets in the first round of C Singles. The doubles team of Ryan and Martin defeated the team of Somma and Vegas of Cortland in the first round of C Doubles with an 8-6 win before dropping their match in the second round. Nigh and Kelly lost, 8-5, in A Singles and in B Singles, Kimble and Klein lost in the second round after getting a bye in the first round. DOUBLES TEAM OF NIGH AND KELLY ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS OF STATE TOURNAMENT (October 15, 2001)-Senior Johnna Nigh and freshman Liz Kelly advanced to the semifinals of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships first doubles flight to lead the Saints to a tie for 12th in the state. The University of Rochester laid claim to the championship while the Saints tied with SUNY-Oneonta for 12th place. After a 7-5, 6-2, win in the first round over Geneseo, Nigh and Kelly, unranked in the tournament despite entering with a season record of 7-1, knocked off the doubles pair from RPI with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, win. The Koch/Casey duo from Rennselaer accounted for Nigh and Kelly's only loss of the season, that coming last week in the UCAA Tournament. The Saint pairing met up with the fourth-seeded team of Neider and Shofler in the semifinals. After the Vassar team won the first set, 6-1, and had taken a 4-1 lead in the second set, Nigh and Kelly battled back to force a tie-breaker in the second set. Vassar, however, would end the Saints rally with a 7-2 win in the tie-breaker, but not before Nigh and Kelly made their mark. They were the only unseeded team to make it into the semifinals in the tournament. In singles action, all five Saints players fell in the first round. St. Lawrence finished 13th in last year's championship. SAINTS FINISH SIXTH AT UCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (October 7, 2001)—The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team finished sixth at the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championships hosted by Vassar College after entering the tournament as the eight seed. The Saints went 1-2 at the tournament, beating Hamilton and losing to Rensselaer and host Vassar. The Saints fell in the first round to top-seeded Vassar on a fast indoor surface, 5-0, as all matches at the tournament were played to decision. St. Lawrence won just five games in that first round match-up, but bounced back to beat fifth-seeded Hamilton, a team they lost to, 8-1, in their regular season match. Liz Kelly won 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, at number two singles and Tammy Klein and Graham Robinson won their five and six matches respectively. The doubles team of Johnna Nigh and Kelly improved to 7-0 at number one doubles by pulling out the 8-2 win. Klein and Catherine Woodhead, who has played well in the last couple of weeks, took the third doubles match, 8-6, to give the Saints their five points. St. Lawrence is now 5-9 on the season. SAINTS BEAT CLARKSON; QUALIFY FOR UCAA TOURNAMENT (October 4, 2001)—The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team qualified for the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association post-season tournament by defeating Clarkson University in a play-in match this afternoon at Sammis Tennis Courts. The match was played to decision with the Saints (4-7) securing five points to the Golden Knights (2-6) one. The Saints doubles team of Johnna Nigh and Liz Kelly improved to 6-0 with a win over Maura Tutty and Amy Gurske. Clarkson’s Nicole Mikkelsen and Katie Baldwin took number-two doubles with an 8-1 win over Abby Martin and Virginia Ryan to secure the Golden Knights lone point while Tammy Klein and Catherine Woodhead teamed to win third doubles, 8-2, against Kathryn Cyr and Nicole Smith. St. Lawrence’s Kelly, Klein and Graham Robinson all tallied singles wins to guarantee the win for the Saints. Three matches, all of which With the victory, the Saints earn the right to face top-seeded Vassar in the UCAA Tournament on Saturday, October 6, at 8:30 am. Vassar College will host the event on Saturday and Sunday. SAINTS WOMEN'S TENNIS LOSES TWO OVER WEEKEND September 29, 2001-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team dropped two matches over the weekend, 8-1 to Hamilton on Friday and 7-2 to William Smith on Saturday, falling to 3-6 on the season. Johnna Nigh had a part in all three of the Saints points on Friday and Saturday, teaming with Liz Kelly to win two doubles matches and then winning at number-one singles on Saturday. The doubles win over Hamilton was impressive as they defeated the team of Lindsay Schantz and Ana Venturas. A week ago, Schantz and Venturas finished in second at the ITA Northeast Championships, but fell to the Saints duo, 9-8, on Friday. Nigh and Kelly won again in doubles on Saturday and Nigh took the number-one singles match, 6-4, 6-2, against William Smith. The Saints next match is scheduled for Wednesday, October 3, as they travel to Plattsburgh for a 4:00 pm match. SAINTS WOMEN’S TENNIS BREEZES BY POTSDAM (September 25, 2001)—The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team cruised to a 9-0 win over SUNY-Potsdam this afternoon to improve to 3-4 on the season. The Bears fall to 1-7 with the loss. St. Lawrence swept all three doubles points. At one-doubles, Johnna Nigh/Liz Kelly teamed to defeat Lauren Wielkiewicz/Teshia Hutt 8-0. Abby Martin and Virginia Ryan downed the team of Jamie Sico and Mariana Strait 8-2 while Tammy Klein and Graham Robinson came up with an 8-3 victory at third singles. The rain came as the players finished up their first set during singles action causing the match to be moved indoors to Leithead Fieldhouse. The Saints managed to come up with all of the singles points with two-set victories in each match. Nigh improved to 6-3 at first singles with a 7-6 (4), 6-2. Kelly won 6-2, 6-2, at second singles and Martin won 6-1, 6-2 in the number-three game. Ryan won, 6-4, 6-4, Klein took a 6-2, 6-1, victory and Robinson came up with a 6-1, 6-2 win. The Saints next match is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26 as they travel to Plattsburgh for a 4:00 pm start. KELLY ADVANCES TO THIRD ROUND AT ITA CHAMPIONSHIPS (September 23, 2001)-St. Lawrence University freshmen Elizabeth Kelly advanced to the third round of the women's Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Region Tournament this weekend hoseted by William Smith College. The event featured more than 70 student-athletes from 16 colleges and universities. Kelly defeated William Smith's Diana Harmann in the first round with a three-set, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, win. She then dispatched of New York University's Tess Coverman with a 6-4, 6-4 straight set win. Kelly's run was stopped by Joanna Toke of Rochester, the tournament's number-one seed and eventual winner, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Johnna Nigh won here first round match over Tara Pajoohi of Rochester, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, before losing to #9-seed Debra LaPorte of SUNY-Plattsburgh, 7-5, 6-3. Abby Martin and Virginia Ryan both lost in the first round of the tournament, both as singles and then as a doubles team. Toke teamed with Rachel Sandler to defeat Lindsey Schantz/Ana Venturas of Hamilton to take the doubles championship draw as well, securing both victories for the University of Rochester.
SAINTS WOMEN'S TENNIS DOWNED BY UNION, 8-1 (September 16, 2001)-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team dropped a 8-1 decision to the Union Dutchwomen at Sammis Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-4 on the season. Union took all three of the doubles points and won all but number-two singles where St. Lawrence's Liz Kelly came up with the win, 6-1, 7-6 (7). With the win, Kelly earned the Saints only point on the day. The Saints next match is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, as they travel to take on North Country nemesis Clarkson at 4:00 pm. SAINTS DENIED BY ITHACA, LOSE 6-3 (September 15, 2001): The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team lost to Ithaca 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Sammis Tennis Courts. Graham Robison led the Saints with wins at third doubles and sixth singles. Robinson teammed up with Catherine Woodhead to defeat Alison Hagenbuch and Emma Jones 8-5 in doubles, then beat Jones in singles 6-3, 7-6 (11). Johnna Nigh came back after losing the first set to win at first singles for the Saints over Paige Watkins 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. In other singles matches, Ithaca's Jen Beekman beat Liz Kelly in second singles 6-3, 6-2, while Meghan Carroll defeated Abby Martin 6-3, 6-1 to earn a point for the Bombers in third singles. Heather Spann beat the Saints' Virginia Ryan 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles, and Alison Hagenbuch defeated Tammy Klein 6-4, 6-2 to win the fifth singles for Ithaca. Watkins and Spann outlasted Kelly and Klein in first doubles 8-5, and Beekman and Carroll beat Martin and Ryan 8-4. The Saints, now 1-3, will face Union at home on Sunday at 11 a.m., while the Bombers will play Nazareth on Wednesday at 4 p.m. SAINTS OUTLAST CORTLAND, 5-4 (September 9, 2001): The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team won their first match of the season with a 5-4 win over SUNY-Cortland on Sunday afternoon at Sammis Tennis Courts. The Saints won four of six singles matches to erase the Red Dragon’s 2-1 lead after the doubles action. Liz Kelly and Tammy Klein won the lone doubles point for the Saints with a 9-8 (5) win at second doubles. Cortland’s Kristen Gross and Stephany Kranz teamed up to win first singles 8-1 while Karen O’Sullivan and Megan McKenna won at three doubles, 8-4. In singles action Johnna Nigh won, 7-6 (5), 6-2, at first singles over Grosso, to improve her record to 2-1 on the season. Kranz earned her second point of the afternoon with a win over Kelly at second singles while teammate Gaby Somma defeated Kim Roberts at third singles, 6-2, 6-0. However, the Saints’ Virginia Ryan and Klein won at five and six singles- Klein with a three-set 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win- to knot the team score 4-4 with only the four singles match still being played. The number-four match featured St. Lawrence’s Abby Martin and Cortland’s Stacy Gordon. After Gordon won the first set 7-6, Martin came back with a 7-5 win in the second set. With both teams watching, Martin outlasted Gordon in the third and deciding set with a 6-3 win to earn the Saints their first victory of the season. St. Lawrence is now 1-2 on the season. Their next match is scheduled for Friday, September 14 at 4:00 pm as they play host to Union.
SAINTS SWEPT BY SKIDMORE (September 8)— The St. Lawrence University women’s tennis team was downed by Skidmore, 9-0, at Sammis Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Saints fall to 0-2 on the season. Skidmore won all three of the doubles points with 8-0 wins. St. Lawrence won just 15 games in all. Tammy Klein had the Saints best chance to win her match as she fell at six-singles, 6-4, 6-4. The Saints will host Cortland tomorrow afternoon at 11:00 a.m. WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS SHORT AGAINST HARTWICK (September 2, 2001)-The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team dropped it's opening match of the 2001 season, 5-4, to Hartwick on Sunday afternoon at Sammis Tennis Courts on the campus of St. Lawrence. Hartwick took two of the three doubles points and held on to win three singles matches for the win. Liz Kelley and Tammy Klein took the lone doubles point for the Saints, beating Christina Giambrone and Lexi Foreman, 8-5. Johnna Nigh won easily, 6-, 6-2, at first singles of Cathy Paolucci for her first win of the season. Kelley gave the Saints another point with a 6-0, 6-3, win at number-two singles over Jenny Scarano. Klein rounded out the Saints scoring with a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1, win at five-singles over Carolyn Kanigowski. Hartwick's Christina Giambrone, Hope Hamling and Stacey Viebrock accounted for singles wins, while the teams of Paolucci/Scarano and Kanigowski/Lauren Kronche each won in doubles. St. Lawrence is now 0-1 on the young season. Their next match is scheduled for Saturday, September 8, as they play host to Skidmore for a 2:00 p.m. match. SCHEDULE CHANGES ANNOUNCED (August 28): There have been several changes made to the St. Lawrence University women's tennis schedule for the fall semester. The Saints home match against Ithaca on September 7 has been changed to Saturday, September 15, when St. Lawrence will host the Bombers for in a 1:00 pm match. The Saints added a match for Sunday, September 9, as well. Cortland will visit Canton for a 11:00 am match on that day.
