2000-2001 Archives SAINTS COMPETE IN MIDDLEBURY INVITATIONAL (April 8): The women's tennis team joined nine other teams in competing in the 12th Annual Middlebury Invitational over the weekend. Several Saint players competed in both singles and doubles matches throughout the tournament. Johnna Nigh received a first round bye in Flight A singles, but lost in the second round 6-1, 6-0 to Joanna Kahn of the University of Vermont. Wendy Glawischnig suffered an opening round loss in Flight A singles, while Alexa Brazilian and Abby Martin each suffered opening round losses in Flight B singles. In Flight C singles, Meredith Potter earned a first round bye and then defeated William Smith's Erin McNamara 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of play. She lost to Elizabeth Meyers of Middlebury 6-0, 6-0 in the third round. Kate Loring, who also competed in Flight C singles, was defeated in the opening round. In doubles action, Johnna Nigh and Alexa Brazilian were defeated by Mary Moore and Lindsey Hicks of Nazareth in the opening round. The Abby Martin/Meredith Potter duo received a first round bye before bowing to Linda Cappwell and Jane Siegel of Middlebury in the second round. Jen Giller and Kate Loring reached the semifinals in third doubles. They defeated Hamilton's Lizzie Fazio and Sarah Taylor 8-4 in the opening round and went on to defeat Stacey Gordon and Megan McKenna of Cortland 8-4 in the quarterfinal match. In the semifinals, they suffered a 8-3 loss to Middlebury's Whitney MacDonald and Nina Popel. SAINTS WRAP UP SEASON AT NYSWCAA TOURNEY Oct. 13- St. Lawrence finished the fall season by tying William Smith and Plattsburgh for 11th place at the NYSWCAA Tournament this weekend. Abby Martin and the doubles team of Johnna Nigh and Claire Spollen each collected opening round victories to earn the Saints four team points. Martin's victory came in fourth singles. She defeated Anne Matusiak of Brockport 6-3, 6-3 before losing to a Vassar opponent 6-2, 6-3. Nigh and Spollen picked up their opening round win in first doubles. They posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Danielle Webster and Jen Adelman of Brockport before losing to an RIT duo by default. All other Saint players were eliminated in opening round play. The team finishes the season at 4-11 overall. They will play a non-traditional schedule in the spring. SAINTS LOSE TWO AT UCAA TOURNEY Oct. 7- The women's tennis team was swept by number one seeded Skidmore College, as well as number four seeded Union College in the opening round of the UCAA Tournament on Saturday. With the two losses, they fall to 4-10 overall. The Saints will play Rensselaer in Sunday's consolation match. ANOTHER SWEEP FOR ST. LAWRENCE Oct. 5- The Saints capped their second consecutive sweep in one week over arch-rival Clarkson University on Thursday afternoon. The team improves to 4-8 overall and will compete in the UCAA conference championship this weekend as a result of the victory. Johnna Nigh defeated Tara Fornaro 6-2, 6-1 in first singles. Claire Spollen notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Maura Tutty in second singles. Alexa Brazilian edged Katie Baldwin 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in third singles. Abby Martin took a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Julia Sartogatta in fourth singles and Mary Anne Patterson finished things off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jen Connolly in fifth singles. The sixth singles match, as well as all three doubles matches were forfeited. SAINTS SWEEP POTSDAM Oct. 3- The women's tennis team posted a 9-0 sweep over visiting Potsdam College on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints are now 3-8 overall and will play Clarkson at 4:15 on Thursday in their final match of the regular season. The site will be determined by the weather. Johnna Nigh earned a 6-0, 6-0 skunk over Natalie Govanlu in first singles. Claire Spollen nearly posted the same results in second singles. She defeated Kristy O'Donoghue 6-1, In doubles action, it was Nigh and Spollen with a 8-1 win over Govanlu and Eggiman. Brazilian and Martin took a second doubles win over O'Donoghue and Autovino by a score of 8-4. Patterson and Jenkins capped things off with a 8-1 win over Anderson and Kristine Peck in third singles. SAINTS TO PLAY CLARKSON PRIOR TO UCAA TOURNEY The Saints will play Clarkson University in a lead-in match to the conference championship at 4:15 p.m. this Thursday. Weather permitting, the match will be played at Clarkson. Otherwise, the Saints will host the contest. HERONS SWEEP SAINTS The William Smith Herons posted a 9-0 sweep over host St. Lawrence on Saturday. The Saints fall to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the UCAA conference with the loss. Johnna Nigh came close to pulling off a win in first singles for the Saints. She went up one set (6-1) over Brighda Daugherty of William Smith. But Daugherty edged Nigh 6-4, Nigh and doubles partner Claire Spollen were also close to victory over Daugherty and Diana Harmann. They lost just 8-6 in first doubles. The Saints will host Potsdam at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday in their final match of the regular season. SAINTS DOWNED BY HAMILTON Hamilton posted a 8-1 victory over host St. Lawrence on Friday afternoon. The Saints drop to 2-7 overall with the loss. The Continentals swept all three doubles matches, losing only in fourth singles to the Saints. Abby Martin picked up the lone win for St. Lawrence. She defeated Jen Lynch 6-2, 6-3 for her second consecutive victory this week in fourth singles. Steelie Jenkins nearly pulled off a victory in sixth singles for the Saints. She was edged by Sarah Taylor of Hamilton (5-7, 6-3, 6-4). The Saints will host William Smith tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CARDINALS DEFEAT SAINTS The women's tennis team dropped to 2-6 overall on Wednesday with a 7-2 loss to visiting Plattsburgh. The Cardinals swept all three doubles matches in addition to claiming first, third, fifth and sixth singles. Claire Spollen and Abby Martin were the only two Saints to earn a victory. Spollen went down one set (6-2) to Barbara Kosowsky of Plattsburgh before bouncing back to win the next two in a row, and the match (6-2, 6-3) in second singles. Martin defeated Plattsburgh's Julie Slattery (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) in fourth singles. The Saints will host Hamilton at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and William Smith at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. NIGH, SPOLLEN COMPETE IN OPENING ROUND Johnna Nigh and Claire Spollen were two of just four Saint tennis players to qualify for the Rolex Tournament at William Smith College this weekend. In opening round play on Friday, Nigh and Spollen suffered defeat in first and second singles respectively, and took a 1-1 split in first doubles. Nigh played Hamilton's Lindsay Schantz in the top half draw of first singles and lost 6-0, 6-3. In consolation play, Cortland's Shannon Kavanagh defeated Nigh 6-4, 7-5. Spollen faced Dawn Penniston of Skidmore in the bottom half draw of second singles and lost 6-0, 6-1. She then played Hamilton's Ginger Pearson in the consolation round and fell by scores of 6-3, 6-3. Nigh and Spollen paired up to compete in first doubles and were victorious over William Smith's Kelly Randall/Lisa Yaguchi duo in the opening round. They then faced number two seed Heather Wood and Amy Wachenheim of Skidmore however, and fell by a score of 8-0. The Saints will host Plattsburgh at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. SAINTS SWEEP GOLDEN KNIGHTS IN UCAA MATCH The Saints snapped a five-game losing streak on Thursday by posting a 6-0 victory over arch-rival Clarkson University. The Saints swept first through third singles, as well as all three doubles matches en route to the victory. The fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches were suspended. Johnna Nigh took a 6-2, 6-1 win over Clarkson's Tara Fornaro in first singles. Claire Spollen defeated Maura Tutty of the Golden Knights (6-4, 6-0) in second singles and Alexa Brazilian won third singles (6-1, 6-0) over Clarkson's Katie Baldesin. In first doubles action, it was Nigh and Spollen with a 8-1 victory over Fornaro and Tutty. Brazilian and Abby Martin took a 8-3 win over Julia Santogatta and Jen Connolly in second doubles. Mary Anne Patterson and Steelie Jenkins closed out the sweep for the Saints with a 8-6 win over Baldesin and Brianna Salek of Clarkson. The Saints are now 2-5 overall. Nigh, Spollen, Brazilian and Martin will compete in the Rolex Tournament this weekend. FOUR SAINTS QUALIFY FOR ROLEX TOURNEY The women's tennis team will have four representatives at the Rolex Tournament this weekend. Johnna Nigh, Claire Spollen, Alexa Brazilian and Abby Martin have qualified for first through fourth singles respectively. Nigh and Spollen will pair up to compete in first doubles, while Brazilian and Martin will take on second doubles. The tournament times are yet to be announced. SAINTS LOSE AT CORTLAND The Saints were swept by host Cortland on Sunday afternoon, dropping their overall record to 1-5. They remain 1-2 in the UCAA conference. Cortland advances to 4-2 overall with the victory. Steelie Jenkins put up a fight in sixth singles, losing to Cortland's Stacy Gordon by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Jenkins and partner Mary Anne Patterson were also the only Saints to come within reach of a victory in doubles action. They lost in third doubles to Mattea Weinstein and Lynnea Schurkamp of Cortland 8-5. The Saints will host arch-rival Clarkson at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. UNION VICTORIOUS OVER SAINTS The women's tennis team lost to host Union College by a score of 8-1 on Friday afternoon. Claire Spollen was the only Saint player to earn a victory. She defeated Union's Jen Wagner 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) in second singles. The Saints fall to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the UCAA conference with the loss. HARTWICK MATCH POSTPONED The Saints were scheduled to play at Hartwick College today, September 12th, at 3:30 p.m., but that match has been postponed. It will be rescheduled for a date that is yet to be determined by both schools. SKIDMORE DEFEATS SAINTS Host Skidmore College posted a 9-0 sweep of the Saints on Saturday afternoon, giving them a second loss on the road this weekend. The Saints are now 1-3 overall. They will travel to Union and Cortland on Friday and Sunday for 4:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. matches respectively. SAINTS FALL TO ITHACA, BUT NIGH CONTINUES TO ROLL The Saints lost to host Ithaca College on Friday afternoon, but freshman Johnna Nigh collected her third straight victory in second singles. Now 3-0 individually, Nigh defeated Susan Nguyen 6-3, 6-2 and was the only Saint player to record a win, as the Bombers won the match by a score of 8-1. Nigh and teammate Claire Spollen nearly pulled off a second victory for the Saints in first doubles, but fell in the tie breaker (9-8, (7-4)) to Nguyen and Brook Basile of Ithaca. The Saints are now 1-2 overall and will face host Skidmore at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. SAINTS FIGHT OFF INJURY, TAKE SPLIT IN SEASON OPENER With six of eight players on the St. Lawrence women's tennis roster plagued by some degree of injury, the team managed to pull off a win in their season opener on Saturday. The Saints defeated Geneseo by a score of 5-4, before falling to Oneonta (8-1) to kick off the 2000 season with a 1-1 record. Johnna Nigh defeated Geneseo's Jennifer Armstrong (1-6, 6-4, 6-0) in second singles, while Mary Anne Patterson and Steelie Jenkins collected wins in fifth and sixth singles respectively for the Saints. Patterson defeated Ariana Munari of Geneseo 6-2, 3-6 (7-5). Jenkins swept Geneseo's Kate Ringer (6-2, 7-5). Nigh and Claire Spollen took a 8-5 victory over Gena Tallarini and Sarah Lindner in first doubles. In second doubles, it was the Saint duo of Alexa Brazilian and Abby Martin over Munari and Sue Storie by a score of 8-6. Nigh was the only Saint player to collect a win in the Oneonta match. She defeated Rachel Martin (6-0, 6-1) in second singles. The Saints will travel to Ithaca on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. match.
