CARBONE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, FOUR MAKE ALL LEAGUE March 17: Blake Carbone, who went 11-9 for the St. Lawrence women’s squash team in her first season of intercollegiate competition was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year and was one of four Saints named first team All League.
She was joined on the Liberty League first team all star team by Anna Dunlap, Meg North and Jessica Ziegler.
CARBONE, ZIEGLER GO 2-1 AT TEAM NATIONALS Feb. 24: Junior Blake Carbone and sophomore Jesse Ziegler each went 2-1 for the weekend at the Howe Cup competition at Princeton, but the Saint women’s team was 0-3 in the Walker Division and finished 24 th nationally.
The Saints lost their opening match of the tournament to 18 th-ranked Middlebury 9-0 on Friday and lost in the consolation semifinals to George Washington, 5-4. Wellesley took the 23 rd place match by a 7-2 score on Sunday afternoon.
Ziegler and Katie Demakos, playing in the exhibition match at ten, were the only Saint players to win a game against Middlebury in the Friday opener. Ziegler and Abby Hoerschler split games one and two with Ziegler winning 9-7 in game two, before Hoerschler went on to 9-1 and 9-7 wins to take the match. Demakos won games one and two against Olivia Kerr, but Kerr came back to win three straight.
George Washington beat the Saints 5-4 for the second time this season in the consolation semifinals. A.P. Daniels also won her match by a 3-2 score at six as she and Kara Popowisk split 10-8 games to open the match. Popowisk went up 2-1 with a 9-0 win in game three, but Daniels came back to win 9-6, 9-6 to close out the match. Carbone won in four, coming back from one down to Molly Ward with 9-6, 10-8 and 9-6 wins and Ziegler won in straight games at nine.
Carbone, who finished her first season of intercollegiate squash with a 11-9 record, beat Ashley Stevens of Wellesley, 9-2, 9-2, 9-7 for her second win of the tournament in the 23 rd place match and Ziegler won game five 9-6 to win a seesaw match with Sam Chu at nine. Demakos also won in the exhibition match, beating Laura Stevens 3-1. |
