SAINTS GO 2-1 AT YALE TOURNAMENT

Jan. 21: St. Lawrence University’s women’s squash team went 2-1 at the Yale Tournament Saturday and Sunday with their lone loss coming against Tufts, ranked 12 th in the current College Squash Association Rankings.

 

Five Saint players went 2-1 in matches for the weekend with Blake Carbone, playing at number eight, coming close to a perfect weekend after a 3-2 loss against Tufts Simone Grant. Carbone, a junior who is playing collegiate squash for the first time, was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week, while Alyssa Smith was selected as the league Player of the Week.

 

The Saints beat Connecticut College 6-3 on Saturday as the Camels won the first three matches, but the Saints took the rest.

 

Laura Dobbs won 3-2 at four, splitting matches with Laura Robertson before winning the decisive fifth game 9-2. Alyssa Smith won in three at five, A.P. Daniels turned back Lizzie Bailey with two 9-4 wins in games three and four after splitting the first two games and Anna Dunlap won 3-0 at seven. Carbone beat Casey Corn 9-1, 9-2, 9-2 at eight and Jessie Zeigler allowed only three points in a 9-0, 9-0, 9-3 win over Stephanie Timpone at nine.

 

The 12 th-ranked Tufts Jumbos, 6-2 on the season, won nine of ten matches by 3-0 scores, but the Saints were competitive in several of the matches. Erin Hart extended Laura Cullen in a good match at three, and Dobbs, Smith, Dunlap and Ziegler also had good matches in addition to Carbone’s match against Grant. Carbone won game one 9-3, Grant came back with 9-4 and 9-2 wins in games two and three, but Carbone forced a fifth game with a 9-2 win in game four. Grant eventually prevailed 10-8 in the fifth game to win the match.

 

The Saints bounced back on Sunday with a 6-3 win over Franklin and Marshall. Meg North won 3-1 at one, coming back from a 9-7 opening game loss to Davina Buckley to win with 9-3, 9-7 and 9-7 game scores. Smith won in three at five, Daniels took three straight at six, Dunlap allowed just three points in a 3-0 win at seven and Carbone won in three straight at eight. Ziegler beat Sara O’Neil 3-1 at nine, coming back from an opening game loss to win in three straight and Molly Terrien won 3-0 at ten.

 

The Saints will return to action at the Maine round robin Friday through Sunday.
