SAINTS WIN LIBERTY LEAGUE OPENER AGAINST VASSAR

Anne Perry Daniels and Jessie Ziegler picked up key wins at five and six to help St. Lawrence University’s women’s squash team to a 6-3 win over Vassar in the Saints’ first match in the 2007 Liberty League Tournament at the Robie Squash Center on Saturday.

 

The Saints finished third in the tournament, which was won for the second straight year by Hamilton.

 

Daniels traded wins with Vassar’s Courtney Burks at five, finally putting it away with a 9-3 win in game five. Ziegler turned back Lorette Fisher at six as the Saints dominated the lower half of the lineup for the victory.

 

Meg North won 3-0 at one for the Saints and Anna Dunlap, Molly Terrien and Blake Carbone won at seven, eight and nine.

 

Hamilton topped the Saints 9-0 in match two of the tournament, winning eight of ten matches by 3-0 scores. Blake Carbone took Nina Platt to four games in a 3-1 loss at nine and Katie Demakos lost 3-2 to Jane Hannon at ten.

 

The Saints lost their final match to William Smith 8-1, but extended the Herons in several matches.

 

North lost 3-1 against Lucy Ross at one, Laura Dobbs lost 3-1 at four, Ziegler lost a 3-2 decision to Emily Hazenberg at six, Dunlap lost 3-1 at seven and Terrien lost 3-2 at eight. Carbone won 3-0 at nine and Katie Demakos won at ten 3-0.

 

 

SAINTS PLAY EXHIBITION AGAINST TORONTO

Nov. 11: The University of Toronto won eight of ten matches on Sunday, but the Saint women’s team had several highly competitive games against a team which was third in the Ontario Athletic Union last season in an exhibition at the Robie Squash Courts on Sunday.

 

The Saints will officially open their 2007-08 season when they host the Liberty League Championships next weekend.

 

Molly Terrien and Katie Demakos had the match wins for the Saints, Terrien beating Pippa Ross 3-0 at eight and Demakos winning 3-2 after trailing 2-0 against Venus Shyu at ten.

 

Blake Carbone went five games in a 3-2 loss to Rebecca Uuong of Toronto at nine.

 

 

YOUNG SAINTS OPEN WITH TORONTO ON SUNDAY

Nov. 6: A young St. Lawrence University women’s squash team will open its season Nov. 11 against the University of Toronto at the Robie Squash Courts in a tune-up match prior to hosting the 2007 Liberty League Championships Nov. 17-18.

 

The Saints graduated a quartet of four-year regulars from last year’s squad and will feature a lineup which will include several sophomores, a junior newcomer and a rookie among its top ten.

 

Meg North, a sophomore who was 5-11 last season playing primarily at the two and three spots in the lineup will take over as the Saint number one while Jacqueline Barrett, 5-11 at four and five will move up to two, Newcomer Laura Dobbs, who played at the Portsmouth Abbey School is likely to crack the top five along with sophomore Jessica Ziegler, who played at seven and eight last season.

 

Junior Blake Carbone, who played at the Nichols School is another candidate for a top ten spot along with senior returnees Anne Perry Daniels and Anna Dunlap, junior Molly Terrien and sophomores Katie Demakos and Alyssa Smith.

 

Other candidates for a spot in the lineup include first year players Hayes Mott and Patricia Poekel, seniors Sarah Gomer and Erica Peterson, junior Sandy Gates and sophomore Ainslee Fagan.

 

The Saints finished last season with the Epps Cup, going 3-0 in the Howe Cup competition at Yale and are looking forward to the addition of a tenth court to the Robie Squash Center. The new glass-walled court should be ready for play in January.
