LATE GOAL PUTS #5 HERONS OVER SAINTS, 1-0 Oct. 21: The St. Lawrence women’s soccer team was able to keep nationally-ranked William Smith out of the net until the 90 th minute of play when the #5 Herons scored the lone goal of the game to edge the Saints 1-0 in Liberty League action Sunday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.
With 49 seconds left in regulation, Heron Brelynn Nasypany scored on a 60-yard breakaway off a Saint corner kick and put the ball in the back of the net past Saints keeper Hayleigh Hochberg. It was Nasypany’s 11 th goal of the season.
The Saints held their own against an undefeated Heron squad. Hochberg made eight saves throughout the contest. William Smith’s Alice Binns made four stops for the Herons, including a key save in the 32 nd minute after a shot by Lauren Annaldo, who got the ball off a corner from teammate Stanzi McGlynn.
The Saints defense was a key player in the game, as first years Nicky Hynes and Katie Lacy, sophomore Rachelle Doucette and senior captain Julie Giller all played strong in the back and were able to keep a strong Heron offensive from scoring for the majority of the game..
“Our team played exceptionally well today,” said Head Coach Deb Biche. “The game was one of our best this season. William Smith is a tough team with a number of good forwards who had a lot of great opportunities, but our defense made it difficult to convert them.”
The Saints fell 7-8-0 overall and 2-5-0 in conference play, placing them 6 th overall in the Liberty League for the 2007 campaign. They will go on to face SUNY Potsdam Wednesday Night under the lights in Potsdam, NY. The game is set to begin at 7:00pm.
