CORTLAND EDGES SAINTS IN CLOSE 3-2 GAME Oct. 27: Sophomore Megan Howard netted two goals for the St. Lawrence University’s women’s soccer team in their final game of the season against the Cortland Red Dragons Saturday afternoon on Sandy MacAllaster Field. The Red Dragons were able to maintain their early led and held off the Saints, 3-2.
Cortland scored early on in the match at 12:10 after Red Dragon Natalie Sloboda passed the ball to Andrea Marino, who headed the ball from just inside the six past Saints keeper Hayleigh Hochberg.
Cortland continued to put the ball between the posts in the 52nd minute with a cross from Mandy Womelsdorf, where the ball landed in front of the goal and deflected off a Saints defender, where Sloboda saw the opportunity and took it, putting the ball past Hochberg, bringing the score to 2-0 early in the second half.
Howard’s first goal came towards the end of the 57th minute of the game where first year Kaitlyn Fahsel had the ball at the top of the 18 and got it to the Shelburne, VT native, where she took a touch and scored at the near post to give the Saints their first goal of the contest and bring the score within one goal, 2-1.
The Red Dragons were not going to let the Saints take the lead, and scored in the 70 th minute off a pass from Kayla Sweet to Kelsey Allen, to give Cortland a 3-1 lead.
Howard’s second goal at 86:09 was off a play that began with a corner kick from sophomore Stanzi McGlynn, where Cortland tried to keep the ball out of the 18 but junior Zoe Bludevich served it back in to Howard, who powered a low ball into the back corner of the net to bring the score to 3-2. Howard’s two goals gave her five for the season, a career high.
The Saints out shot the Red Dragons 21-13, but Cortland’s Megan Thayer had an outstanding day in goal with 14 saves for the Red Dragons, insuring the win for Cortland.
“We played really well and had some great opportunities, but Megan [Thayer] had amazing saves for them, especially near the end of the game,” said Head Coach Deb Biche.
