ANNALDO, HYNES NAMED TO

CARDINAL CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Sept. 10: Sophomore Lauren Annaldo and first-year Nicky Hynes were named to the 2007 Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team for their performances in their games against Plattsburgh and Smith College at the tournament, which was held in Plattsburgh, NY, over the weekend.

Annaldo (left) scored the only goal of the game on Saturday to give the Saints the win over Smith College, 1-0. It was that Hampton, NH native’s third goal of the season and her fourth collegiate career goal.

“I'm very happy with Lauren's performance so far this year,” Head Coach Deb Biche said.  “You can see her gaining confidence with each game, and if she continues to improve, she could have a really good year.”

Hynes (right), a defender from Carleton Place, Ontario, held together the Saints defense in both games, allowing only three shots from Smith College, none of which were on goal.

“Nicky had a solid defensive effort for us this past weekend,” Biche said.  “She does a great job of reading the game and eliminating dangerous situations before they happen.  She was a key component in maintaining the shut out against Smith College.”

The Saints will play SUNY Oswego this Wednesday, September 12th, at 4:00 pm on Sandy MacAllaster Field.

SAINTS DEFEAT SMITH COLLEGE

AT CARDINAL CLASSIC, 1-0

Sept. 8: For the second weekend in a row, sophomore forward Lauren Annaldo led the St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team to victory, scoring the lone goal of the game against Smith College Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinal Classic, held in Plattsburgh, NY.

In the 42 nd minute, sophomore midfielder Susan Garnett sent a through pass to Annaldo. The Hampton, NH native beat two defenders and sent a hard shot past Smith goalkeeper Lauren Bachtel from just inside the box, giving Annaldo her third goal of the season and Garnett her first assist of the year.

Within a minute, Annaldo was back near the goal with possession of the ball, but was unable to score a second goal against a tough Bachtel, who remained strong and made the save to end the period with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Saints.

The second half was only 1:12 old when sophomore forward Becca Townsend had the first shot of the period, helping to keep the momentum going for St. Lawrence. Annaldo had her third shot on goal at 75:46, but Bachtel managed to make what would be the last save of the game, ending an impressive day in goal with ten total saves.

Saints keeper Hayleigh Hochberg saw no action between the posts, despite the four corner kicks Smith College had in the contest. The Pioneers were unsuccessful getting through a tough Saints defense and had only three total shots in the game, none of which were on goal, despite a late surge in the last 20 minutes of the match.

In addition to Annaldo’s three shots on goal, junior midfielder and captain Lauren Sischo had two, as did first-year forward Kaitlyn Fahsel and first-year midfielder Katie McHugh.

The Saints will have their first home game of the season this Wednesday, September 12 th against SUNY Oswego. The game is set to begin at 4:00pm at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

PLATTSBURGH HOLDS OFF SAINTS, 3-1

Sept. 7: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team fell to the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals at the Plattsburgh Cardinal Classic late Friday night. The Saints were able to keep Plattsburgh off the scoreboard for nearly 73 minutes before they scored their first of three goals to defeat the Saints 3-1 at Chazy High School.

The 63 rd minute served to be the first point in the game when a team went up on the scoreboard, as Saint sophomore midfielder Stanzi McGlynn had a corner kick opportunity. The ball caught the foot of junior midfielder and captain Lauren Sischo, who netted the first goal of the game and brought the score to 1-0 in favor of the Saints.

Within 15 minutes, the Cardinals had responded to the goal with two of their own within three minutes of each other, in the 73rd and 76th minute, respectively. They finished off the game with a goal shot from 35 yards out by Cardinal Emily Riley in the 90th minute of play to seal the win for the Cardinals.

During the first half of the game, the Saints and Cardinals appeared to be evenly matched with a number of missed opportunities for each team, one corner kick a piece and Plattsburgh out-shooting the Saints by only one shot, 5-4. Despite the Saints’ seven corner kicks in the second half, the Cardinals controlled the last 45 minutes of the game with nine shots, including five shots in the last 30 minutes and four shots on goal, compared to St. Lawrence’s four total shots, and only one shot on goal.

First year keeper Hayleigh Hochberg had a great game with five total saves, while Plattsburgh’s Kathryn Lind had three saves.

St. Lawrence will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, September 8th in the second round of the Cardinal Classic. The Saints will face Smith College at 2:00pm at SUNY Plattsburgh.
