ST. LAWRENCE FALLS TO VASSAR, 1-0 Sept. 22: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team put up a tough fight against the Vassar Brewers Saturday afternoon at Prentiss Field in Poughkeepsie, NY, and battled until the end, but found themselves just short of a second conference win as the Brewers scored the lone goal of the game and won 1-0.
Neither team had a clear advantage in the contest as both St. Lawrence and Vassar shared possession evenly throughout the entire match. St. Lawrence out-shot the Brewers 13-12 with six shots on goal, while Vassar had seven. The only goal of the game came in the 33rd minute from Brewer Jordan Hynes who crossed the ball to sophomore Anna Robinson. The ball rolled across the goal face, drawing keeper Saints keeper Hayleigh Hochberg just out of position. Robinson, the Brewers’ leading scorer, took advantage of the open net, sending the ball home for what proved to be the game-winning goal. St. Lawrence continued to fight for the remaining time and battled with the Brewers defense to get near the goal.
The last ten minutes of the game, St. Lawrence gave a final push to try and score, and with less than two minutes remaining, a loose ball in front of Vassar’s net gave first-year forward Emily Buckley-Matura ( Brooklyn, NY) a point-blank shot on goal. However, Brewer keeper Anne Hutchinson came out of the goal to block the shot. Junior midfielder and captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY) collected the rebound with Hutchinson still on the ground, but her shot was high and sailed over the open net.
Both Hochberg and Hutchinson had impressive games in goal, having six saves a piece.
St. Lawrence, now 6-2-0 and 1-1-0 in the Liberty League, will play Clarkson University Thursday, September 27th, in Potsdam, NY in another conference contest. The game is set to start at 4:00 pm.
