SAINTS DEFEAT SMITH COLLEGE

AT CARDINAL CLASSIC, 1-0

Sept. 8: For the second weekend in a row, sophomore forward Lauren Annaldo led the St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team to victory, scoring the lone goal of the game against Smith College Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinal Classic, held in Plattsburgh, NY.

In the 42 nd minute, sophomore midfielder Susan Garnett sent a through pass to Annaldo. The Hampton, NH native beat two defenders and sent a hard shot past Smith goalkeeper Lauren Bachtel from just inside the box, giving Annaldo her third goal of the season and Garnett her first assist of the year.

Within a minute, Annaldo was back near the goal with possession of the ball, but was unable to score a second goal against a tough Bachtel, who remained strong and made the save to end the period with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Saints.

The second half was only 1:12 old when sophomore forward Becca Townsend had the first shot of the period, helping to keep the momentum going for St. Lawrence. Annaldo had her third shot on goal at 75:46, but Bachtel managed to make what would be the last save of the game, ending an impressive day in goal with ten total saves.

Saints keeper Hayleigh Hochberg saw no action between the posts, despite the four corner kicks Smith College had in the contest. The Pioneers were unsuccessful getting through a tough Saints defense and had only three total shots in the game, none of which were on goal, despite a late surge in the last 20 minutes of the match.

In addition to Annaldo’s three shots on goal, junior midfielder and captain Lauren Sischo had two, as did first-year forward Kaitlyn Fahsel and first-year midfielder Katie McHugh.

The Saints will have their first home game of the season this Wednesday, September 12 th against SUNY Oswego. The game is set to begin at 4:00pm at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
