UNDERCLASSMEN LEAD SAINTS TO 3-2 WIN OVER RPI Sept. 21: First-year forward Kaitlyn Fahsel scored her first collegiate game-winner and had an assist in the St. Lawrence women’s soccer team’s Liberty League opener against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY Friday afternoon, where the Saints squeezed past the Redhawks to take the win, 3-2.
RPI went up on the board first in the 38 th minute with an unassisted goal scored by Redhawk Amanda Nicklin. The Saints refused to back down and within three and a half minutes, had a corner kick where they took full advantage of the opportunity in front of them. Sophomore midfielder Stanzi McGlynn had the corner kick and got it to first-year midfielder Katie Oram, who headed it in for her first goal of her college career, tying the score at a goal a piece.
The Saints were determined to leave the field at halftime ahead in the game. Fahsel had possession and saw sophomore forward Lauren Annaldo ready to score. Fahsel crossed the ball to Annaldo, who tucked it in behind Redhawk keeper Meghan White with only 48 seconds remaining in the first period. This was the Hampton, NH native’s fifth goal of the season, and gave the Saints a 2-1 lead at the half.
The Saints repeated their first goal of the game in the 68 th minute as McGlynn had another successful corner kick, but this time got it to Fahsel, who headed it past White at the back post to bring the Saints to a 3-1 lead in the middle of the second half. Despite Rensselaer’s goal less than two minutes later by Redhawk Sarah Briggs that brought the score within a goal, the Saints were able to hold off the Redhawks for the win.
“Overall, we had a very positive performance,” Head Coach Deb Biche said. “We did a good job when we had possession of the ball, and we took advantage of a few of our attacking opportunities, although I’d like to see us put away some more of those, and I know this team can do that.”
The Saints outshot Rensselaer 19-8 and were able to contain the Redhawks to only three shots in the first half. White had a great game in goal for the Redhawks as she tallied nine saves between the posts. Keeper Hayleigh Hochberg had two saves in goal for the Saints.
St. Lawrence, now 6-1-0 (1-0-0), will battle against Vassar College in another tough Liberty League contest Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, NY. The game is set to begin at 2:00pm.
