PLATTSBURGH HOLDS OFF SAINTS, 3-1 Sept. 7: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team fell to the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals at the Plattsburgh Cardinal Classic late Friday night. The Saints were able to keep Plattsburgh off the scoreboard for nearly 73 minutes before they scored their first of three goals to defeat the Saints 3-1 at Chazy High School.
The 63 rd minute served to be the first point in the game when a team went up on the scoreboard, as Saint sophomore midfielder Stanzi McGlynn had a corner kick opportunity. The ball caught the foot of junior midfielder and captain Lauren Sischo, who netted the first goal of the game and brought the score to 1-0 in favor of the Saints.
Within 15 minutes, the Cardinals had responded to the goal with two of their own within three minutes of each other, in the 73rd and 76th minute, respectively. They finished off the game with a goal shot from 35 yards out by Cardinal Emily Riley in the 90th minute of play to seal the win for the Cardinals.
During the first half of the game, the Saints and Cardinals appeared to be evenly matched with a number of missed opportunities for each team, one corner kick a piece and Plattsburgh out-shooting the Saints by only one shot, 5-4. Despite the Saints’ seven corner kicks in the second half, the Cardinals controlled the last 45 minutes of the game with nine shots, including five shots in the last 30 minutes and four shots on goal, compared to St. Lawrence’s four total shots, and only one shot on goal.
First year keeper Hayleigh Hochberg had a great game with five total saves, while Plattsburgh’s Kathryn Lind had three saves.
St. Lawrence will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, September 8th in the second round of the Cardinal Classic. The Saints will face Smith College at 2:00pm at SUNY Plattsburgh. |
