SAINTS DOMINATE NORWICH TO WIN LOTTO CLASSIC, 3-0 Sept. 2: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team, coming off a close win Saturday, was able to keep Norwich scoreless in the Lotto Classic title game Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cadets 3-0.
The Saints (2-0-0, 0-0-0) were in control of the ball from the beginning of the championship game, but were scoreless until the 32nd minute. First-year student Kaitlyn Fahsel took her defender on a one-on-one on the wing and got the edge on her for a cross. Norwich keeper Alecia Wright got her hands on it but gave up a rebound. Junior Zoë Bludevich took a rebound shot that deflected off the Norwich defender onto the foot of sophomore Megan Dumka, who was waiting on the back post. The Watertown, NY native buried the shot past Wright, scoring the first goal of the game for St. Lawrence.
Within five minutes, the Saints were back near the Wright and the Cadets’ goal and sophomore Shellie Brzoska passed the ball in behind the Norwich defenders for first-year Lizzie Bogosian, who beat the Norwich defender. She served the ball across the six, where it slipped through the hands of the Wright onto the head of Saints forward sophomore Lauren Annaldo and into the goal, giving the Saints a 2-0 lead as they headed into the half.
The Saints were able to carry the excitement from the first half into the second and the Scarlet and Brown defense were able to prevent any scoring attempts for the Cadets in the second half of the game. First-year player Emily Buckley-Matura used her speed to beat her defender on the dribble in the 69th minute of play, and the Brooklyn, NY forward cut the corner and slotted a ball for Annaldo, who turned quickly and finished beating a defender and Wright for the insurance goal and her second goal of the game.
The Saints dominated the Cadets in the offensive categories, having impressive advantages in both shots (20-2) and corners (9-1) by the end of the game. First-year keeper Hayleigh Hochberg had one save for the Saints, which gave the Croton, NY native her first shutout of her collegiate career.
Four Saints were named to the 2007 North Country Classic All Tournament team: junior midfielder and captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY), sophomore forward Meg Howard (Shelburne, VT), sophomore midfielder Stanzi McGlynn (Montoursville, PA), and sophomore defender Rachelle Doucette (Cumberland, ME).
