GOLDEN FLYERS SCORE EARLY,

BEAT SAINTS 2-1

Sept. 29: The St. Lawrence women’s soccer team fell behind early and was unable to catch up to a speedy Nazareth College Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Flyers edged the Saints 2-1 in non-conference play at MacAllaster Field. It was the Saints’ first home loss this season.

The Golden Flyers controlled the ball through much of the first half and out-shot the Saints 11-6, 7-4 in shots-on-goal. The first goal of the game was a cross to the far post by Nazareth’s Caroline Parsons, who sent it to teammate Kelly Finn. Saints keeper Hayleigh Hochberg came just beyond the posts, leaving Finn the perfect opportunity to tuck the ball into the back left corner at 11:08 to bring the score to 1-0 in favor of Nazareth.

That didn’t stop the Golden Flyers from continuing to pour the pressure on the Saints, and their second goal came only 90 seconds later as Caity Richardson got the ball from teammate Taryn Bilodeau and kicked it high from just outside the 18 and sent it sailing just out of Hochberg’s reach, giving the Golden Flyers a 2-0 lead after less than thirteen minutes of play.

While Nazareth continued to maintain possession of the ball throughout much of the period, a foul called against them in the 43 rd minute proved to be a great scoring opportunity for the Saints as sophomore Stanzi McGlynn took a direct kick with only 2:25 remaining in the first half. The midfielder, who hails from Montoursville, PA, powered the ball past Nazareth keeper Hillary Simon and into the top back of the net to bring the score to 2-1 to end the first half. The goal was McGlynn’s first of the season.

Saints first-year forward Lizzie Bogosian made a great attempt in the 25 th minute, when the Manlius, NY native had a one-on-one chance with Simon, but the ball sailed just high of the goal. First year Emily Buckley-Matura also had an impressive game, using her speed to power past the Golden Flyers’ defenders twice and take two shots on Simon in the first half, who was able to get to both of them before they crossed between the posts.

The second half proved to be scoreless for both teams but was filled with a number of missed opportunities for the Saints and Golden Flyers. The teams shared possession of the ball a bit more in the second half, as St. Lawrence continued to increase the amount of pressure they put on the Golden Flyers. Nazareth only out-shot the Saints 10-7 in the last 45 minutes and only edged them 6-5 in shots on goal. Sophomore forward Megan Howard had three shots in the contest, including two close ones on Simon, both in the last ten minutes of play.

McGlynn had a chance to tie the game with her second direct kick with 3:20 remaining in the game, but the shot was saved by Simon, her eighth and final save of the game. Hochberg made 11 saves for the Saints.

The Saints, now 7-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Liberty League, return to conference action against Union College on Friday, October 5 th at Sandy MacAllaster Field. The game is set to begin at 4:00pm.
