CORNERS LIFT SAINTS PAST CLARKSON, 3-0

Sept. 27: A substantial advantage in corner kick opportunities proved to be all the difference for the St. Lawrence women’s soccer team Thursday afternoon, as they were able to use their 9-0 edge in corners to propel themselves past the Clarkson Golden Knights in Liberty League action, winning the game 3-0 at Clarkson Field.

Before the first goal was scored at 22:08, the Saints were able to contain Clarkson to only one shot, while St. Lawrence took six. It wasn’t until sophomore midfielder Stanzi McGlynn’s third corner kick that the Saints would scramble in front of the goal and score. First year midfielder Katie Oram took a shot which was initially stopped by Clarkson keeper Meagan Emlaw, but sophomore forward Megan Howard was prepared was able to hit a low groundball that was just out of Emlaw’s reach. Howard’s second goal of the season brought the Saints to a 1-0 lead.

Nearly seven minutes later as the game just turned 30 minutes old, McGlynn had another corner kick opportunity and got the ball to the foot of junior midfielder and captain Lauren Sischo, who slid it past Emlaw for her sixth goal of the season and the Saints second goal of the game.

In the second half, McGlynn continued to power the ball from the corner and get it where it needed to be. The Montoursville, PA native took her eighth corner of the contest in the 61 st minute and gave sophomore forward Becca Townsend a chance to use her head to get the ball over Emlaw for the third goal. The Stockton, NJ native’s first goal of the season brought the Saints to a comfy 3-0 lead. McGlynn’s two assists were her fifth and sixth of the season.

“Clarkson was a strong team, and I’m glad we were able to pull this one off,” said Head Coach Deb Biche. “We had a high level of play today, and I’m excited about this win.”

Despite being out shot 10-3 in the first half, the Golden Knights, who are now 1-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference, came out ready to attack in the second half as they had the same number of shots in the last 45 minutes of play as the Saints with six. Clarkson poured on the heat in the 80 th minute and gave St. Lawrence a scare with three shots, two on Saints first-year keeper Hayleigh Hochberg and one that hit the crossbar, all within fifteen seconds of each other.

“Hayleigh made a couple of key saves to shutout the game,” Biche said. Hochberg had four saves, all in the second half, earning her fourth shutout of the season.

The Saints, who improved to a 7-2-0 record and 2-1-0 in the Liberty League, will play the Nazareth Golden Flyers Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field in non-conference action. The game is set to begin at 2:00pm.
