SISCHO AWARDED ALL-STATE HONORS

Dec. 11: Junior captain Lauren Sischo was named to the 2007 All-NYSWCAA Women’s Soccer State Team on Friday. The Rodman, NY native was one of 12 midfielders in New York to be chosen for the team.

Sischo (left) had another outstanding season for the Scarlet and Brown, as she started in all 17 games and led the 2007 team in goals for the third year in a row, tallying six goals and totaling 12 points for the season. She also netted two game-winners and was named Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week once throughout the season after a six-point weekend that included the game-tying and game winning goal against Oswego State. Sischo was also named to the 2007 Liberty League All-Academic Team and was first team conference selection for her performance throughout the season.

“Lauren is the engine of the team,” Saints’ head coach Deb Biche said. “She is a consistent, reliable, and an all-around great player who is technical and can visualize where the ball needs to go. She generated key goals for us this season when we needed them.”

The midfielder led the Saints team this season to a 7-9-1 overall record and a 2-5-0 record in the Liberty League. “As a young team, we gained valuable experience during the course of the season playing in one of the toughest leagues in the country for Division III soccer,” Biche said. “Few teams face the competition we do throughout our season and this year was no exception. Playing consistently at this level will be the goal for next year.”

St. Lawrence had a number of key players in 2007 in addition to Sischo, including sophomores Megan Howard and Lauren Annaldo. Howard, (right) who was also named to the conference’s All-Academic Team earlier this year, tallied a career high ten points after scoring five goals, the second-highest number of goals scored by any player on the team. She also netted a game-winner against North Country rival and Liberty League opponent Clarkson University. Her last two goals both came in the Saints' final game of the season against Cortland State, earning her Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week honors.

“Megan is a fast forward with good one-on-one ability who found her goal scoring niche later in the season,” Biche said.

Annaldo (left) also had the best season of her career as a Saint thus far, scoring 10 points in the 16 games she played in during her sophomore campaign. The Hampton, NH native was tied with Howard as the second highest point scorer on the team with five goals, and led the Saints to wins against both Smith College and Elmira College, as she netted the game-winner in each contest. She earned Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week honors after she scored two goals during the Lotto Tournament in early September.

“Lauren is a quick-footed technical forward who found the back of the net early in the season to help us start off with an early run of wins,” Biche said.

As the Saints look ahead to the 2008 season, they will be missing a key component to the team as senior captain Julie Giller will graduate in May. The Bellingham, WA native played in 59 games throughout her career and netted 16 points in her four years as a Saint. The forward was also named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team three consecutive years.

Despite battling an ankle injury her senior year, Giller found her way back into the lineup midway through the season. “Julie’s been a tough athlete who would throw herself into physical challenges with reckless abandonment and usually come up with the ball,” Biche said. “She has great intensity that will be greatly missed by the team.”
