SIX SAINTS EARN CONFERENCE

ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS

Feb. 16: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team had six players named to the Liberty League All-Academic team, including senior Zippy Podhaizer, junior Julie Giller, and sophomores Kristen Bednar, Whitney MacClaren, Zoe Bludevich, and Lauren Sischo.

Podhaizer has been a consistent name on the conference’s All-Academic squad, earning the award for the fourth time in her career. The Essex Junction, VT native had an outstanding career, scoring her first career goal on a penalty kick against Vassar this season. One of the team’s captains in 2006, Podhaizer started in every game while at St. Lawrence, and was a two-team 2nd Team Liberty League selection.

Giller started in four games as a junior, serving the Saints on both ends of the field. She has now started in 27 games during her career, scoring seven goals and notching a pair of assists for 16 points. The Bellingham, WA native will be the team’s lone senior in the fall.

The Saints’ quartet of sophomores has made an impact both on the field and in the classroom since their arrival to campus. Sischo has led the team in scoring each of her first two seasons and was a 1st Team Liberty League selection for her outstanding season.

Bednar, MacClaren, and Bludevich have also added both skill and depth to the Saints midfield. The threesome has combined for seven points in their short tenure with the Scarlet and Brown.

To earn Liberty League All-Academic honors, students must be in their second year and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better.

RECOGNITION CONTINUES FOR McGLYNN,

NAMED TO ALL-STATE TEAM

Dec. 6: The recognition continued for St. Lawrence University first year student Stanzi McGlynn this week, as the Montoursville, PA native has been named to the NYSWCAA All-State Team. The announcement comes only one week after the rookie back was named to the D3Kicks.com All-Region Third team.

McGlynn made an immediate impact on the Saints roster this year, working hard on both ends of the field to help the young team improve each game. She helped her team keep six opponents off the scoreboard on the defensive end of the field, and was the Saints' go-to on direct and corner kicks. McGlynn led the team and the Liberty League in assists in her rookie campaign with seven.

"Stanzi is one of those players who shows up ready to play every day whether it be at practice or a game," said Saints head coach Deb Biche. "We're very excited for her, as being named to New York's All-State team is a great honor."

The rookie started in all 17 games this season, scoring her first career game-winning goal at Oswego State, two of her eleven points in 2006. McGlynn's All-State honors come after also being named to the Liberty League's Second Team at the midfield position.

D3KICKS.com NAMES SISCHO AND McGLYNN

TO ALL-REGION THIRD TEAM

Nov. 30: Sophomore midfielder Lauren Sischo and first year back Stanzi McGlynn have been named to D3Kicks.com's All-Region Third Team after leading the Saints to a 9-7-1 overall record this past season.

Sischo, a Liberty League First Team Midfielder this season as well, continued to be one of the top offensive threats in the region. She netted nine goals, three of which were game-winners. The Rodman, NY native started in all 17 games this year, and proved to be clutch by scoring two overtime goals versus RPI and Elmira. After finishing another outstanding soccer season, Sischo has since begun playing valuable minutes at the point guard position for the Saints women's basketball team.

"Lauren was definitely a great playmaker for us this season," said Saints head coach Deb Biche. "Whenever we needed to make something happen, it was Lauren who stepped up. It's great to see her hard work pay off."

Sischo is joined on the D3Kicks.com's New York Region Third Team by McGlynn, who burst on to the scene this season both offensively and defensively for the Scarlet and Brown. On the defensive end of the field, McGlynn helped the Saints compile six shutouts this season and post a road record of 5-1-1. The Liberty League "Rookie of the Year" was a consistent threat on both corner and direct kicks, as she tallied a team and conference-high seven assists to go along with two goals.

The Montoursville, PA native started in all 17 games in her rookie campaign, and she scored her first career game-winning goal at Oswego State, two of her eleven points in 2006. McGlynn was also named to the Liberty League's Second Team at the midfield position.

"Stanzi raised our team's level of play on both ends of the field, working hard to both create chances for us and shut down our opponents before threatening our keeper," added Coach Biche. "It will be exciting to watch her mature and continue to improve her game throughout her career."

Sischo and McGlynn were joined by five fellow Liberty League players on the D3Kicks.com New York All-Region Teams. Those players include Laura Burnett-Kurie (1st Team) and Nikki Dudley (3rd Team) from William Smith College, Caitlin Lortie (2nd Team) and Megan Brousseau (2nd Team) of Hamilton College, and Caitlin Cuozzo (2nd Team) from Union College.

FIVE SAINTS EARN 2006 LIBERTY LEAGUE

ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

Nov. 2: St. Lawrence University first year student Stanzi McGlynn was named the 2006 Liberty League Rookie of the Year on Thursday by the conference, while four other Saints collected League Honors for their efforts throughout the season.

McGlynn made an immediate impact this season for the Scarlet and Brown. Solid both offensively and defensively in the midfield, she helped the Saints to six shutouts this season and a 9-7-1 overall record, including a 5-1-1 mark on the road. The two time “Rookie of the Week” recipient was a constant threat on both corner and direct kicks, creating plenty of opportunities for her teammates.

“We are very excited for and proud of Stanzi for all of her accomplishments this year,” said Saints head coach Deb Biche. “She came in as a rookie ready to contribute to our team, and she made a lot of positive things happen offensively for us throughout the season.”

The Montoursville, PA native showcased her durability by starting every game in the midfield for the Saints. She scored two goals and tallied a team and conference-high seven assists. One of McGlynn’s goals this year was the game-winner at Oswego State , two of her eleven points in the 2006 campaign. She was also tagged a Second-Team All Liberty League midfielder.

Sophomore Lauren Sischo was chosen a First-Team All Conference midfielder, one year after earning Honorable Mention at the position. She remained one of the top offensive players in the conference, scoring nine goals, including three game-winners. The Rodman, NY native's durability is evident in her 17 starts, and her clutch play is apparent with two overtime goals versus Rensselaer and Elmira .

Joining McGlynn on the Second Team was senior back Zippy Podhaizer. The Essex Junction, VT native started every game this season for the Saints, using her smart, patient style of play to anchor the team’s defensive unit. She also scored her first career goal on a penalty kick in St. Lawrence's 2-0 win over Vassar.

First year Becca Townsend and senior Carly Draper earned Honorable Mention status for their efforts during the 2006 season. Townsend added another offensive weapon for the Saints, as she stepped right into the starting lineup as a rookie. She scored four goals and had 3 assists in 16 games, including three game-winning goals. One of the game-winners came in conference play over Liberty League foe Vassar College .

Draper, who played in all 64 games between the pipes during her St. Lawrence career, backstopped the Saints to eight shutouts throughout the season. The senior captain played in 1602:01 minutes, posting a 1.24 goals against average and a .800 save percentage.

SISCHO AND DRAPER EARN RECOGNITION FOR

PLAY VERSUS POTSDAM AND ELMIRA

Nov. 1: St. Lawrence University sophomore Lauren Sischo was named the "Co-Offensive Player of the Week" by both ECAC Upstate and the Liberty League for her performances versus Potsdam and Elmira. Fellow teammate Carly Draper was also tagged by the conference as the "Co-Defensive Player of the Week."

Sischo scored both game-winning goals last week for the Saints as they finished the year with a 9-7-1 overall record. The Rodman, NY native scored the opening goal in the team's win over North Country rival Potsdam State on Wednesday. She then netted the overtime goal against the Elmira Soaring Eagles in the season finale. The two goals brought her season total a team-high nine.

Meanwhile, Draper, the team's senior goalkeeper, finished her career on a 360:16 minute shutout streak, holding her final three opponents off the scoreboard. The Gloucester, ONT native made one save versus Potsdam, then made three stops versus Elmira. The game against the Soaring Eagles was her 64th appearance, playing in every game for the past four seasons.

SISCHO NETS OVERTIME GAME-WINNER

TO FINISH 2006 SEASON IN STYLE

Oct. 28: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team finished the 2006 season with their fourth consecutive victory, topping Elmira 1-0 in overtime. The game was the last for the team’s four senior captains, including Carly Draper, Samantha Bealer, Alana Mahoney, and Zippy Podhaizer.

The Saints ( 9-7-1 , 3-3-1 ) controlled much of the first half, out-shooting the Soaring Eagles 4-0 in the opening 45 minutes of play. However, Elmira keeper Meaghan Doherty kept the visitors off the scoreboard, collecting two saves. Draper, making her 66 th appearance between the pipes for the Scarlet and Brown, did not have to make a single save in the first half, as the defense was solid in front of her.

However, the second half was a much more evenly played contest, with Elmira actually holding the edge in shots, 6-4. Draper came up big in her final start, saving all three shots she faced in the second half to keep the game scoreless. St. Lawrence had a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks, but were unable to get anything past Doherty.

In the overtime, the Saints immediately took control and put pressure on the Elmira defense. As the game seemed destined for a second overtime, the ball came to Mahoney just inside of two minutes remaining. The Wilmington , VT native sent a pass to Sischo, who finally connected and scored the game-winning goal at 98:35 as her shot beat Doherty and gave the Saints their fourth straight win to close out the 2006 season.

The Saints finished with a 10-6 edge in shots over the Soaring Eagles and an 11-6 cushion in corner kicks. Draper made three saves in the victory, while Doherty stopped four St. Lawrence shots in the loss.

The Class of 2007 played a major hand in the victory, as not only did Mahoney collect an assist on the game-winning goal, but Draper, Podhaizer, and Bealer collected the team’s third straight shutout. Sischo’s goal was her ninth of the season and her fourth in the final four games.

SENIORS LEAD THE WAY AS SAINTS WRAP UP

HOME SEASON WITH 5-0 ROUT OF POTSDAM

Oct. 25: St. Lawrence University seniors Alana Mahoney, Samantha Bealer, Zippy Podhaizer, and Carly Draper finished their careers at Sandy MacAllaster Field in impressive fashion on Wednesday afternoon, as the Saints put on a dominant 5-0 performance against Potsdam State on Senior Day.

The Saints (8-7-1, 3-3-1) and Bears got off to a very slow start, as neither team was able to get any real chances in the early going. The St. Lawrence defensive unit, anchored by Podhaizer, shut down each Potsdam attempt as they tried to apply pressure on Draper, the Saints goalkeeper.

Though the Saints had control of the ball most of the first half, they had their first prime chance to take the lead in the 37 th minute when sophomore Lauren Sischo found the ball at the top of the box. The Rodman, NY native sent a hard grounder that eluded Potsdam keeper Sarah Casey, but rolled just wide of the right post.

Sischo, who leads the Saints in scoring this season, wouldn’t miss on her second opportunity of the half, as she gave her team the lead at 41:44. Bealer sent a ball into the box that seemed harmless as Casey came out to cover the pass. However, she misplayed the ball, and Sischo was there tap in the empty net goal for her eighth tally of the season.

The Scarlet and Brown continued to put pressure on the Bears as the half would down. Bealer again centered a ball towards the Potsdam box with the clock inside of ten seconds. First year Lauren Annaldo made a heads-up pass, skipping the ball to her left to fellow classmate Shellie Brzoska, who laced a shot into the right side of the net with a mere five seconds remaining in the opening half. The goal was her first of the season, and gave St. Lawrence a 2-0 advantage.

"It was a challenge for us in the first half because they were very organized defensively and got numbers behind the ball when we were in possession,” said Saints head coach Deb Biche.  “As the half progressed the team realized that we had to attack the flank to spread their defense and to play more quickly so that we could create opportunities.  In the second half, we attacked more rigorously and our play was quicker and we were really able to open some things up."

Potsdam simply couldn’t get anything going against the Saints solid defensive trio of Draper, Podhaizer, and first year Rachelle Doucette. Their hard work coupled with the Saints consistent attack would be too much for the Bears to overcome in the second half.

First year student Becca Townsend netted her fourth goal of the 2006 campaign at 65:08. The Annandale , NJ native carried the ball from Casey’s right side, and with a defender on her hip, sent a shot that bounced off the right post, deflected off the keeper’s back, and crossed the line to put the Saints ahead, 3-0.

Though the Bears made a goalie change at 71:04, Molly Flynn was unable to keep the Saints off the board late in the second half as well. Sophomore Caitlin Quinn got into the scoring at 73:27, when she netted her second goal of the season off a hard grounder that Flynn was unable to reach while diving to her right. The ball rolled into the bottom right portion of the net, putting St. Lawrence up 4-0.

It was the fifth and final goal that really put the finishing touches on a great Senior Day, when Mahoney took a pass from Quinn from about 30 yards away from the goal. The forward, who had worked hard offensively all day, finally connected with a beautiful long shot that sailed right over Flynn’s head into the back of the Potsdam goal with only 16 seconds remaining in the game. It was Mahoney’s second goal of the season, and capped off the scoring on Wednesday’s game.

"The seniors have played a big role in bringing this young team together and I'm happy that there last home game was a win," said Coach Biche.  “Zippy, Sam, and Carly earned an excellent shutout today and Alana’s goal in the final minute was great, as she was working really hard for one all day.”

It was the Saints third consecutive win at Sandy MacAllaster Field, and moved the Class of 2007 to 31-29-5 overall in their four seasons at St. Lawrence. Draper finished with one save in the shutout, while Casey made eight saves in the loss for the Bears. The Scarlet and Brown had the advantage in both shots (25-5) and corners (7-1) on the afternoon.

St. Lawrence will finish the 2006 season on the road this Saturday, October 28th, when they visit the Elmira College Soaring Eagles. The game is set to begin at 2:30pm.

SISCHO NAMED LIBERTY LEAGUE'S

"OFFENSIVE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK"

Oct. 23: St. Lawrence University sophomore Lauren Sischo has been selected the Liberty League's "Offensive Performer of the Week" after her performances in the final two conference games of the season versus Rensselaer and Vassar.

Sischo finished off the Saints conference schedule in style, scoring a pair of goals against the Red Hawks on Saturday, including the game-winner 7:46 into the first overtime. She also played well against the Brewers on Sunday, controling the ball in the midfield and creating opportunites on the offensive end.

The Rodman, NY native finished her second Liberty League season ranked third in the conference in points (15) and tied for second in goals with seven.

The Saints will play their final home game this Wednesday, October 25th at 3:00pm against North Country rival Potsdam State. The game will be the final contest played at Sandy MacAllaster Field for the four seniors, Samantha Bealer, Alana Mahoney, Zippy Podhaizer, and Carly Draper.

DRAPER BLANKS VASSAR AS SAINTS ROLL

TO 2-0 WIN IN CONFERENCE FINALE

Oct. 22: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team won their final game of the 2006 Liberty League season on Sunday afternoon, posting a 2-0 victory over Vassar College. The game, which was originally scheduled for Friday but was canceled due to heavy snow, was senior Carly Draper’s 21st shutout of her career and moved the Saints to 7-7-1 (3-3-1) on the season.

The Scarlet and Brown played a very impressive first half of soccer, controlling most of the possession and creating several scoring chances on Brewer goalkeeper Lisa Strumwasser. Strumwasser turned away the first few chances, but first years Megan Howard and Becca Townsend hooked up at 14:21 to put the Saints head,

1-0.

Howard took a throw in deep in Vassar territory and turned the corner, rushing in from Strumwasser’s right side. Once she drew the defender out of the middle of the box, she threaded a perfect pass into the goalie box, where Townsend was waiting to tap it home for her third goal of the season.

Vassar was unable to get many quality chances against Draper in the first half, earning only one shot on goal. However, the Saints continued to pour on the offense, as sophomore Caitlin Quinn seemingly had an easy goal when she beat Strumwasser in the box and had a shot at the open goal. However, the Vassar keeper reached out and pulled her down, setting up a penalty kick for the Saints with only 2:32 remaining in the first half.

Senior back Zippy Podhaizer, known more for her smart, defensive style of play, took the penalty kick for the Saints, and notched her first career goal when her PK fooled a diving Strumwasser to put the Saints ahead 2-0 heading into the half.

Though the Saints added the insurance goal, Vassar came out ready to play and the second half and turned the tables on the home team. The Brewers applied consistent pressure on Draper in the second frame, accumulating several chances to get back into the contest.

Nicole Daddazio had a great chance to pull the Brewers to cut the deficit in half when she landed a shot from inside the box that seemed headed over Draper’s head and into the net. The Gloucester , Ontario native showed her athleticism, though, leaping up and punching the ball over the cross bar to keep the two-goal advantage in tact.

Vassar’s final chance to create some momentum came with just over eleven minutes remaining in regulation, when a pass found Molly Mackin to Draper’s left just outside the goalie box. She wound up and fired a rocket on net, but Draper sprawled out to her left to protect the goal and preserve her fourth shutout of the 2006 campaign.

“Vassar came out strong in the second half, but we had some players come off the bench that really helped us counter their early pressure,” said head coach Deb Biche. “I’m very proud of how we played as a team today.”

St. Lawrence finished with a 19-11 shot advantage over Vassar, though the two teams each earned six corner kicks on the afternoon. Draper finished with four saves to collect her seventh win of the year while Strumwasser closed with six saves in the loss.

Though the Saints did close their conference season with consecutive wins over Rensselaer and Vassar, a Skidmore victory on Saturday officially eliminated them from postseason play.

St. Lawrence will play their final home game of the 2006 season at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Wednesday, October 25 th against North Country foe Potsdam State. The Saints and Bears are set to square off at 3:00pm.

SISCHO’S OVERTIME GOAL GIVES

SAINTS HOME WIN

Oct. 21: Lauren Sischo scored her second goal of the game on a pretty shot to the upper corner at 7:46 of overtime to lift St. Lawrence University to a 2-1 Liberty League women’s soccer win over Rensselaer on Saturday, snapping a five-game losing streak on MacAllaster Field.

“It was great to finally get one at home,” said Saint coach Deb Biche, whose team is 4-1-1 on the road this season. “Carly Draper made a great save in a one-on-one with a RPI attacker right at the end of regulation time and then Lauren won it on an awesome goal.”

The Saints improved to 6-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Liberty League heading into a Sunday match with Vassar which was postponed by heavy snow on Friday. That game will be played at 11 a.m. RPI drops to 5-8-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the Liberty League.

Becca Townsend tapped the ball back to Sischo who hit a shot from 25 yards out to the upper corner which beat RPI goalie Tara Maradino cleanly for the game-winner. It was Sischo’s seventh goal of the year and first game-winner.

RPI took the early lead in the game 15:55 into the game as Karen Kraft scored from Sahara Hinz on a scramble in front of Draper as the Saints missed a clearing chance.

SLU came out strong to start the second half and tied the game off a set play as Stanzi McGlynn served the ball into the box and Sischo put it past Maradino 2:01 into the half.

Both Draper and Maradino finished with four saves each as the Saints had a slim 14-12 edge in shots overall. SLU had three corner kicks to one for the Red Hawks.

No. 19 ITHACA DROPS SAINTS, 4-0 IN

NON-CONFERENCE CONEST

Oct. 14: The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team kept Ithaca College, ranked No. 19 in the nation, in their sights through one half of play on Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster Field. However, the Bombers netted three second-half goals to put the Saints away and take the non-conference contest 4-0.

St. Lawrence (5-7-1, 1-3-1) kept Ithaca quiet in the early going, and created the first scoring opportunity of the game when first year student Megan Howard rushed up-field towards Ithaca keeper Aimee Meacham. However, as she carried the ball on the slick field, the Bombers defenders caught her, swarming her in the box and shutting down her scoring chance.

The visitors would come right back down the field after stopping Howard and have a chance of their own. Kara Hutchinson fed a pass into the box to Saints keeper Carly Draper's right. The ball found Ashley Williams, who chipped a pass to Chelsey Feldman. Feldman found a crease in the defense, and laced a shot into the net past Draper for a 1-0 Ithaca lead heading into the half.

The Bombers wasted little time in adding an insurance goal to start the second half, as Colleen Masterson scored the second goal of the game only 9:04 into the second half to put Ithaca ahead 2-0. Though Draper was able to stop the initial blast off the foot of Feldman, the ball bounced out to the keeper's right where Masterson was waiting to finish the play and give her team a two-goal advantage.

St. Lawrence began to press offensively, trying to score a goal to climb back into the game. However, their aggressiveness led to Ithaca's third goal, when the ball found Samantha Margulies at midfield. Margulies broke out with the ball, showing her impressive speed as she separated herself from the Saints defense, creating a one-on-one with Draper. Her shot went into the upper left side of the net, putting the Bombers up 3-0 with 13:55 remaining in regulation.

Ithaca would complete the scoring on the afternoon when Williams sent a cross into the box in front of Draper. The pass landed on the foot of Amy Scheffer, who rifled a shot out of mid-air, drilling the ball into the upper right part of the goal. The goal came at 84:53.

Ithaca extended their current shutout streak to nine consecutive games, the best in school history behind a three save performance from Meacham. Draper made five saves in the loss for the Saints. Ithaca held the edge in both shots (21-7) and corner kicks (6-1) on the afternoon.

St. Lawrence will be in action again on Friday, October 20th in Liberty League play against the Vassar College Brewers. The game is set to be played at 4:00pm at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

DRAPER AND McGLYNN EARN

LIBERTY LEAGUE RECOGNITION

Oct. 3: Senior goalkeeper Carly Draper and first year student Stanzi McGlynn were awarded two of the Liberty League's weekly awards this week for their efforts versus Clarkson and Nazareth. Draper was named the conference's "Defensive Player of the Week," while McGlynn was the "Rookie of the Week."

Draper backstopped the Saints to a pair of wins this week over Clarkson and Nazareth. The Gloucester, ONT native made six stops in shutting out the Golden Knights in a Liberty League contest on Thursday. Then, in a 2-1 overtime win against the Nazareth, Draper made eight saves as the Saints defeated the Golden Flyers for the first time in the program's history. This was the second consecutive week that Draper has won the award.

McGlynn collected three assists for the Saints this week against the Golden Knights and Golden Flyers. She set up both of St. Lawrence's goals against the Clarkson on Thursday, then added her third assist of the week on the Saints first goal against the Nazareth. That assist was her tenth point of her rookie season.

St. Lawrence will be at home for the first time since September 3rd on Friday when they take on William Smith at Sandy MacAllaster Field. The game between the Saints and Herons is set to begin at 4:00pm.

BEDNAR'S OVERTIME GOAL GIVE SAINTS

FIRST WIN OVER NAZARETH

Sept. 30: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team got a boost from their underclassmen on Saturday as sophomore Kristen Bednar scored the game-winning goal against Nazareth College with a mere 51 seconds remaining in the first overtime session. The 2-1 victory marks the first time the Saints have defeated the Golden Flyers in women’s soccer, as Nazareth had previously owned the series, 7-0-2.

The Saints ( 5-4-1, 1-1-1) took an early lead in the 12 th minute of the game off a corner kick from first year student Stanzi McGlynn. The Montoursville, PA native sent a cross into the box, and fellow rookie Lauren Annaldo deflected the pass past Nazareth keeper Shannon Burns to give the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 lead.

Although St. Lawrence was out-shot 8-5 in the opening half, their defense held firm and senior goalkeeper Carly Draper made six first-half saves to send her team to halftime with the slim one goal lead.

The Golden Flyers continued to put pressure on Draper early in the second half, and finally scored the equalizer at 68:24. Sophomore Kelly Finn scored an unassisted goal to even the score at 1-1. Though Nazareth tried to gain some momentum and grab the lead, Draper was up to the task and kept the game tied heading to the extra session.

In overtime, St. Lawrence again turned to their underclassmen and they responded in a big way. First year Megan Howard sent a long, high cross through the box and over keeper Polly Muehlenkamp’s head. Muehlenkamp, who replaced Burns after the first half, tried to steer the ball clear of danger, but instead, it came right to Bednar on the goal line. The Essex Junction, VT native tapped the ball into the net and sent the Saints to a solid, non-conference victory.

Nazareth finished with 18 shots on goal and five corners, while St. Lawrence closed with nine shots and one corner. Draper finished with eight saves in the win for the Saints, while Burns and Muehlenkamp each had two stops in the loss.

St. Lawrence will shift gears back into conference play on Friday, October 6 th when the Herons of William Smith visit Canton, NY. The Liberty League contest is set to begin at 4:00pm at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

QUINN AND BEALER SCORE TO

PACE SAINTS PAST ARCHRIVAL

Sept. 28: The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team picked up their first Liberty League victory of the season over their arch rivals, the Clarkson Golden Knights, by the score of 2-0 at Clarkson Field in Potsdam, NY on Thursday evening.

The Saints (4-4-1, 1-1-1) took half the number of shots as the Golden Knights, but made their chances count on a very sloppy field due to the heavy rain. The Scarlet and Brown notched the first goal of the game late in the first half off a corner kick when a pair of Clarkson defenders lost their footing and left sophomore Caitlin Quinn with a quality scoring chance.

First year Stanzi McGlynn sent an arching corner into the goalie box, where the Waterville, ME native was waiting to tap the ball past Clarkson netminder Meagan Emlaw to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Quinn's first goal of the 2006 campaign came at 38:19.

Though Clarkson tried to rally to score the equalizer, Saints goalkeeper Carly Draper kept them off the board with six saves that kept the momentum in the Saints corner.

With the game winding down late in the second half, the Saints had a chance to convert another corner kick to add an insurance goal and put away the Golden Knights. McGlynn again took the corner, this time sending a ball to far post where sophomore Lauren Sischo was waiting. Sischo deflected a header into the upper portion of the net to give the Saints a 2-0 cushion at 81:41. The Saints defensive unit held up, keeping the Golden Knights off the board and preserving a 2-0 victory.

Clarkson out shot St. Lawrence by a 12-6 margin, but it was the Saints 6-2 edge in corner kicks that proved to be the difference. Draper earned her third shutout of the season, while Emlaw made two stops in the loss.

The Saints head to Rochester, NY on Saturday to square off in a non-conference matchup with Nazareth College. The game between the Saints and Golden Flyers is set to start at 2:00pm .

DRAPER CHOSEN AS LIBERTY LEAGUE

"CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK"

Draper backstopped the Saints in a pair of double-overtime road contests against the Thoroughbreds and Dutchwomen, notching 23 saves on the weekend. Carly recorded a 10-save shutout, helping the Saints to a scoreless tie against 22nd ranked Skidmore, then made 13 saves in a 2-1 double-overtime loss against Union.

Draper, who leads the Liberty League in both total saves and saves per game, will lead the St. Lawrence women's soccer team to Potsdam, NY on Thursday when the Saints take on Liberty League and North Country rival Clarkson. The game is set to start at 4:00pm.

UNION GETS LATE DOUBLE OVERTIME

GOAL TO NIP SAINTS, 2-1

Sept. 23: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team, coming off a double-overtime draw with Skidmore yesterday, left everything they had on the field against the Union College Dutchwomen today in Schenectady, NY. The Saints, who fell behind early, showed their resiliency by netting the equalizer just over three minutes later. However, the home team got a favorable bounce off a corner in the final seconds of the second overtime period, setting up a header by Jenna Ondash to give Union a 2-1 double overtime win over the Saints at Garis Field.

The Saints (3-4-1, 0-1-1) were on their heels for much of the game, as Union showed their offensive prowess with 28 shots and seven corner kicks. The Dutchwomen got the opening goal 18:34 into the first half when Bianca Germain sent a cross to Chelsea Hargis, who ripped a low-bouncing shot past Saints keeper Carly Draper, putting Union ahead 1-0.

The Scarlet and Brown showed their toughness by quickly regrouping, and creating a scoring opportunity of their own. First year student Stanzi McGlynn, the Liberty League Rookie of the Week this week, sent a free kick into the box which landed on the foot of junior Julie Giller. The Bellingham , WA native ripped a shot through the Union defense and into the net past Union ’s keeper Mia Simone, leveling the score at 1-1. The goal came at 21:41.

Most of the offense throughout the rest of the contest was owned by Union , who worked hard to end the game in regulation. The Dutchwomen, who out-shot the Saints 13-1 in the second half, had several quality chances to get the lead goal. However, the Saints defense stood their ground and Draper was on her game, making 13 saves.

Though the Saints made it through over nineteen minutes of overtime play, Union capitalized on the lone overtime corner chance when Caitlin Cuozzo sent a cross from the far right into the box. Hargis got position on the Saints defender and tipped the ball to Ondash, whose header sailed over Draper with a mere 34 seconds remaining, pushing Union past St. Lawrence by the final score of 2-1.

“It’s tough to lose one in the final minute of double overtime, but that’s the game,” said Saints head coach Deb Biche. “We played a double-overtime game yesterday, and came back today with a great effort. The league is going to be strong this year, so we’re going to turn our attention to Clarkson.”

Union finished with a 28-5 advantage in shots over St. Lawrence on Saturday, and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Draper made 13 saves in the loss, while Simone picked up two saves and collected the win.

The Saints and Golden Knights are set to renew their rivalry on Thursday, September 28th in Potsdam, NY. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00pm.

DRAPER MAKES TEN SAVES TO PRESERVE

TIE IN CONFERENCE OPENER

Sept. 22: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team battled to a scoreless tie with the No. 22 ranked Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on Friday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, NY. Senior goaltender Carly Draper made 10 saves in net for the Saints, who improve to 3-3-1 (0-0-1) on the season with the draw.

In the Liberty League opener for both teams, both teams provided solid midfield and defensive play. The Thoroughbreds, who haven’t allowed a goal in over 358 minutes, played to a tie for the third time this season. Liza Mills made four saves for the home team, who out shot the Saints 19-6.

“Although they had more chances than we did, we held our own and created a few scoring opportunities as well,” said Saints head coach Deb Biche. “Any time you can earn a point on the road in conference play, you’ve worked hard and done well.”

The Saints received another well-played game from first year Stanzi McGlynn, who was chosen the Liberty League’s Rookie of the Week last week. McGlynn had one shot on goal, but also created several other chances for the Saints to try and grab the lead. The Montoursville, PA native also had a key stop in the overtime session to prevent Skidmore from earning the victory.

Draper’s outstanding performance was almost undone with 6:30 to play in regulation when Skidmore’s Anna Cerio rifled a shot towards the corner of the goal. However, the senior from Gloucester, Ontario dove and made a tip save, deflecting the ball wide of the post. It preserved the tie for the Saints, who had three corner kicks to Skidmore’s eight.

Though the Saints may be pleased with a tie at Skidmore, their schedule doesn’t get any easier, as they will drive to Schenectady, NY to take on the Union Dutchwomen tomorrow afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 2:00pm.

LIBERTY LEAGUE NAMES McGLYNN

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sept. 19: St. Lawrence University first year student Stanzi McGlynn has been named the Liberty League's Rookie of the Week after her outstanding performances versus Oswego State and Cortland State this week.

McGlynn had a break out weekend offensively for the Saints, as she helped her team defeat both Oswego State and Cortland State on the road. The Montoursville, PA native scored the game-winning goal against the Lakers, then followed that with a four-point performance at Cortland State in which she had a hand in every Saint goal. McGlynn scored St. Lawrence's first goal and assisted on both the game-tying and game-winning goals.

"Our team has a never-say-die attitude, and last week Stanzi helped our team reap the benefits of our fighting spirit by setting up or scoring goals when we needed them to get the result," said head coach Deb Biche. "This week, it was Stanzi and next week it might be someone else. But it was great to see her gain the confidence and deliver when the team needed it."

McGlynn and the Saints (3-3-0) will look to extend their active win streak as they enter league play against Skidmore and Union this weekend. Friday's game versus the Thoroughbreds is scheduled for 4:00pm in Saratoga Springs, NY.

ROOKIES LEAD THE WAY AS SAINTS

STUN CORTLAND IN OVERTIME, 3-2

Sept. 16: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team, trailing by two goals to SUNY Cortland, made a furious comeback in the final 33:45 to tie the score at 2-2. Then, a mere 7:05 into the first overtime, first year Becca Townsend scored the game-winning goal to give the Saints (3-3-0, 0-0-0) their third straight victory, a 3-2 win over the Red Dragons in Cortland, NY.

Cortland opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, moments after St. Lawrence had an excellent scoring chance denied. Cortland junior goalie Megan Thayer made a diving save on St. Lawrence sophomore Lauren Sischo’s shot from the center of the box. Only a minute later, the Red Dragons’ Colleen Martin sent a ball into the box from the right side to junior Mandy Womelsdorf, who had her back to the goal. Womelsdorf turned to her right and curled a left-footed shot off the right post and into the back of the net past a helpless St. Lawrence keeper Carly Draper, giving Cortland a 1-0 lead.

The home team took that lead to the half, but in a very evenly played game. Cortland registered five shots in the first 45 minutes, while the Saints tallied four. The Red Dragons also had the edge in corners, 2-0.

The Red Dragons extended their lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute when senior Marie Valentino worked the ball down the left side and sent a long ball deep into the box to sophomore Katie Trivisonno. Trivisonno ran onto the ball and touched it past Draper at the right post, giving the home team a seemingly comfortable two goal advantage.

However, just as it appeared the life had been sucked out of the Saints, the visiting team began their improbable comeback on a goal from first year student Stanzi McGlynn. St. Lawrence was awarded its only corner kick of the game and McGlynn bent the kick into the upper far corner of the goal in the 69th minute. Only moments later, Draper kept the score at 2-1 when she denied Womelsdorf’s bid for a second goal with a lunging punch save at the upper right corner.

With the game at 2-1, it was again McGlynn that set up what would be the tying goal 83 minutes into the game. McGlynn sent a long free kick into the box that a Cortland player was unable to control with a header. The ball popped into the air and landed on the head of junior Julie Giller, who headed it over Thayer and into the net for the equalizing goal.

In the overtime session, McGlynn again got things started for the Saints as she served a long deep ball into the box off an indirect kick. Her pass was on the mark, as Townsend ran onto the ball and directed it into an open net to complete the Saints biggest comeback of the season in the team’s first overtime contest.

“This was honestly a team effort where we didn’t get down on ourselves or start to quit,” said head coach Deb Biche. “Obviously Stanzi did some great things for us, and we’re now starting to play with the confidence we’ll need to compete for the Liberty League this season.”

Most of the final stats leaned towards the Red Dragons, as the home team out shot the Saints 15-10 and had six corners to the visitor’s one. Draper stopped seven shots for St. Lawrence, including five in the second half, while Thayer finished with three saves on six chances.

With the victory, the Saints will enter the 2006 Liberty League schedule on a three game winning streak. St. Lawrence will look to make it four in a row on Friday, September 22 nd as the Saints visit Saratoga Springs, NY to take on the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds to kick off the conference schedule. Game time is set for 4:00pm.

OFFENSE CONTINUES TO SHINE AS

SAINTS DOMINATE OSWEGO 4-1

Sept. 14: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team, coming off their first win of the season on Saturday, carried their momentum into Oswego, NY this afternoon. The Saints fell behind early, but rallied for three second half goals to rout the Lakers of Oswego State, 4-1.

Although the Saints (2-3-0, 0-0-0) seemingly dominated the game in all offensive categories, the scoreboard said otherwise in the early going as the Lakers scored the opening goal only 12:52 into the contest. Meghan Miller set up her teammate Tricia Sullivan, whose shot eluded St. Lawrence goalkeeper Carly Draper to put the home team ahead 1-0.

The rest of the opening half belonged to the Saints, though, as they finished the opening 45 minutes out-shooting the Lakers 13-3. Sophomore Lauren Sischo would knot the score at 1-1 at 29:17 as she beat Oswego keeper Melissa Hacknauer for the equalizer before the end of the half.

Much like Saturday’s game against the Lasell College Lasers, the Saints came out in the second half having made some adjustments offensively that again proved to be the difference. The visitors grabbed the lead in the 57 th minute when first year student Stanzi McGlynn scored her first collegiate goal, putting the Scarlet and Brown in front 2-1.

Less than twelve minutes later, the Saints padded their lead when first year Megan Howard scored at 69:13 to put her team up by the score of 3-1. The insurance goal was Howard’s second of the season, giving her goals in consecutive games. St. Lawrence would put the game out of reach only 7:54 later, as junior Julie Giller fed senior captain Alana Mahoney for her second goal of the season to cushion the Saints lead at 4-1. The goal came at 77:07.

The Saints finished the game with a 34-7 shot advantage over Oswego, and put 16 of their shots on net as opposed to the Lakers’ three shots on goal. St. Lawrence also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Hacknauer finished the game with twelve saves on sixteen attempts for the Lakers, while Draper made a pair of saves while earning her second win of the 2006 season.

St. Lawrence has now scored a total of eight goals in their past two games, quadrupling the team’s goals scored in their opening three games combined. The Saints will look to continue their offensive success on Saturday when they travel to Cortland, NY to take on the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland. Game time is set for 2:00pm.

TOWNSEND EARNS CONFERENCE'S

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK AWARD

Sept. 11: First year student Becca Townsend was honored by the Liberty League on Monday, as the Saints midfielder was selected as the conference's Co-Rookie of the Week.

Townsend had her first collegiate multi-point game against the Lasell College Lasers on Saturday at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State. The Annandale, NJ native scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the team's final goal, capping off an impressive 4-0 win.

Townsend and the Saints will look to carry their momentum over from their first victory of the season to Thursday, as they travel to Oswego, NY to take on the Lakers. The game is set to begin at 4:00pm.

SISCHO AND PODHAIZER EARN

ALL-TOURNEY HONORS AS SAINTS ROLL

Sept. 9: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team entered Saturday afternoon’s game with Lasell College on a scoring drought, having scored just two goals in their opening three games of 2006. However, the Saints put all of their offensive worries to rest, exploding for four goals in a dominating performance over the Lasell Lasers in the Plattsburgh State Cardinal Classic.

The Saints ( 1-3-0, 0-0-0) controlled both possession and the scoring opportunities, as they out-shot Lasell 21-2. Their aggressive mentality created several scoring chances that the Saints would take advantage of to earn their first win of the season. St. Lawrence was led by sophomore Lauren Sischo, who notched a pair of goals and an assist in the win.

First year student Becca Townsend got the Saints on the board in the 23 rd minute when she took a pass from Sischo and beat Lasers’ goalie Jamie Remmers to grab the early lead. Just 87 seconds later, the Scarlet and Brown tallied their second goal of the game, as a pair of first year students hooked up to extend the lead to 2-0. Megan Dumka earned her first career point in a St. Lawrence uniform, as her pass found Megan Howard who scored her first collegiate goal 25:11 into the game.

“We tried to keep an up-tempo pace and keep them on their heels defensively,” said head coach Deb Biche. “We knew coming into tonight that we needed to finish better when we had opportunities, and we were finally able to do that.”

Biche’s team wasn’t satisfied with two goals after the first half, though, as Sischo scored her second and third goals of her sophomore season in the second half to put the Lasers away. Her first goal of the night, which put the Saints ahead 3-0, came at 50:50 off a pass from first year student Rachelle Doucette. Sischo would again beat Remmers just over fifteen minutes later at 66:21. Townsend was credited with the assist on that goal.

“Our goal coming into today was to correct some of the mistakes we had made in our first three games and to take advantages of our chances,” said Biche. “We came together nicely as a team and hopefully this win will get things jump-started for the rest of the season.”

Senior goalkeeper Carly Draper finished with one save in the victory, while Remmers stopped 7-of-11 St. Lawrence shots on goal. The Saints also held a substantial advantage in corner kicks over Lasell, 8-0. Senior back Zippy Podhaizer, who played a major role in the defensive end for the Saints this weekend, joined Sischo on the 2006 Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Saints will look to carry their momentum from Saturday’s victory over to their next contest, which comes on Thursday, October 14 th against the Lakers of Oswego State. That game is scheduled to be played in Oswego, NY beginning at 4:00pm.

NYU NETS TWO GOALS IN FINAL TEN

MINUTES TO DEFEAT SAINTS

Sept. 8: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team squared off with a very quick and aggressive New York University (NYU) team on Friday night at the Plattsburgh State Cardinal Classic. The Saints were able to keep NYU off the scoreboard for over eighty minutes, but the Violets would notch two goals in the final ten minutes of play to seal the victory, 2-0.

The Violets (3-0-0) controlled much of the game’s offensive numbers, keeping the ball in the Saints zone for much of regulation. NYU out-shot the Saints 11-3 and had four corner kicks to St. Lawrence’s none. However, senior goalkeeper and captain Carly Draper kept the Saints tied with eight saves.

Though they were held in check for much of the first half, the Saints did manage all three of their shots on NYU keeper Katie Barnes in the opening 45 minutes of play. Their best opportunity came at the very end of the half, but their bid to claim the lead sailed just high over the net.

The second half was owned by the Violets, as they out-shot St. Lawrence 7-0. Draper and the Saints defense did all they could to keep the game scoreless, but NYU’s Sarah Lensing’s pass found Lucy Dolly Caires, who finally beat Draper and give the Violets an important 1-0 lead at 80:03.

That goal seemed to deflate the Saints, who after eighty minutes allowed zero goals, gave up their second in under three minutes. Lensing was on the scoring end this time, as she took a pass from teammate Sasha Klupchak and fired it past Draper to put the game out of reach with less than seven minutes to play.

“NYU is definitely a solid, fast team,” said head coach Deb Biche. “We are still making a few mistakes that are costing us, but we are a young team and I think we’re learning with every game. Hopefully tomorrow, we can go out and get a win.”

Draper finished with eight saves on the evening, while her counterpart Barnes closed with two. All three of St. Lawrence’s shots came from freshmen, as Megan Howard, Susan Garnett, and Anna Hart tallied shots in Friday’s opening game. NYU, who won their third game in the young 2006 season, is yet to allow a single goal.

St. Lawrence will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, September 9 th in the second round of the Cardinal Classic. The Saints will face Lasell College at 4:30pm.

PIONEERS HOLD OFF SAINTS IN

LOTTO NORTH COUNTRY FINALE

Sept. 3: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team was unable to dig themselves out of a two-goal deficit, as Utica College hung on to defeat the Saints by the score of 2-1 in the final game of the 2006 Lotto North Country Classic.

The Pioneers grabbed the lead just over halfway through the first half when Danielle Smith re-directed a pass inside the box to Ashley Granger. Granger settled the ball and fired a shot into the right side of the net past Saints’ keeper Carly Draper for the 1-0 advantage.

The Saints worked hard to score the equalizer in the first half, as sophomore Lauren Sischo and first years Becca Townsend and Anna Hart all earned a few opportunities. However, Utica’s Ashley Kaufman kept the Saints off the scoreboard in the first half, totaling four saves.

Leading by a goal, Smith again set up a prime opportunity for the Pioneers. She took the ball down the left side of the field and sent a cross into the box. Her pass landed on the foot of Kristen Vasta, whose shot on net went through Draper’s hands and crossed the line to give Utica College an important insurance goal at 49:42.

The Saints, who finished the game with a total of 21 shots, poured on the offensive pressure knowing they needed two goals to even the score. They finally got a ball past Kaufman when sophomore Caitlin Quinn fed a pass in the center of the box to a wide open Sischo. The forward turned and launched a line drive just out of the reach of Kaufman that got the Saints on the board and back in the game with only 13:29 remaining in regulation.

In the final minutes, the ball went back and forth with neither team earning a solid opportunity until the final seconds. As the final ten seconds of the game counted down, the Saints threaded a pass into the box that was chased by a St. Lawrence forward. She collided with a Pioneer defender, drawing a whistle from the official with only seven seconds remaining, leading many to believe the Saints would have a penalty kick with a chance to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, the referee indicated the foul was actually on St. Lawrence, and possession and the game belonged to Utica College.

St. Lawrence finished the game with eight shots on goal and four corner kicks. Utica fired six shots on Draper and had five corner chances. Kaufman got the win for the Pioneers, who moved to 1-1-0 thanks to her seven-save performance. Draper made four saves in the losing effort.

Townsend was selected to the All-Tournament team for the Saints, while Kaufman and Sarah Richards were chosen from Utica College. The Saints will be in action again on Friday, September 8 th against NYU at the Plattsburgh Tournament in Plattsburgh, NY. The game is set to begin at 7:00pm.

In the early game, Clarkson and Bridgewater State battled in a back-and-forth affair in what turned out to be the North Country Classic Championship game. The Golden Knights seemed to have things under control after 45 minutes, as they had a pair of goals from Catie Reed and Jinna Stugart to grab a 2-0 advantage mid-way through the game. Reed’s goal came 9:33 into the contest when a cross from Courtney Donovan found her in the box for an easy chip-in goal into the top right corner. Stugart made it 2-0 when Reed found her on a cross and Stugart nailed a grounder that skipped past Bridgewater’s keeper Emily Schlosser at 22:33.

However, the Bears would make a few adjustments and came out prepared to make a run in the second half. Christine Soucy got things started for Bridgewater when she took the ball only 5:03 into the second half into the box and fired a left-footed rope past a diving Clarkson keeper Meagan Emlaw to cut the deficit to 2-1. Only 2:42 later, the Bears notched the equalizer when Jessica Chiachio beat a Clarkson defender on the right side and took a shot that snuck past Emlaw to even the score at two a piece.

With all of the momentum on their side, Bridgewater scored the fifth goal of the game at 62:33 when Julie Sullivan carried the ball into the box with a defender on her every step of the way. Instead of trying to cross the ball to her right foot, Sullivan drove a left-footed shot that Emlaw had no chance of stopping into the top right corner to give the Bears a late lead of 3-2.

The Golden Knights refused to go away, though, and bounced back with only 6:03 remaining in regulation. Clarkson drove a ball towards Schlosser which came up just short of the box. Donovan took the pass, dribbled into the box, and drilled a shot that Schlosser couldn’t keep out of the net to again even the score at 3-3.

With the game headed for overtime, Chiachio took matters into her own hands for Bridgewater State. She carried the ball down the far side of the field with a defender on her hip. She showed great speed as she separated herself from the pack and moved in on Emlaw. Chiachio took a solid shot in stride that Emlaw deflected, but couldn’t stop from getting past her as Bridgewater State erupted having grabbed a 4-3 lead with only 4:14 remaining. The Bears buckled down on the defensive end and preserved the win and the 2006 Lotto North Country Classic title.

BRIDGEWATER STATE RALLIES PAST

SAINTS IN SEASON OPENER

Sept. 2: The St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team was unable to hold off Bridgewater State in the late-goings of Saturday’s season opener, as the Bears tallied two goals in a span of 4:09 to rally past the Saints in the Lotto North Country Classic at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints (0-1-0, 0-0-0) dominated much of the game and managed to outshoot their opponents 25 to 14. They scored the first goal of the 2006 campaign at 21:38 off a corner kick, as senior Alana Mahoney managed to get a foot on the ball from close range. Her shot just barely snuck past a diving Emily Schlosser, who was unable to get a handle on the ball for the Bears.

Leading 1-0 late in the first half, the Saints kept on the attack as sophomore Lauren Sischo made a beautiful move and found herself one-on-one with Schlosser. Though her shot did get past the keeper, it skipped just wide of the far post, keeping Bridgewater State within striking distance at the half.

Much of the play in the early going of the second half was back and forth, as both teams tried to tack on a goal. However, neither team was able to get a real chance until Bridgewater State’s Christine Soucy blocked a kick from a St. Lawrence defender and headed up-field towards Saints’ goalie senior Carly Draper.

Draper, who made a fantastic diving save to her right in the first half to keep the Saints ahead 1-0, couldn’t stop Soucy. The forward fired a shot into the low corner of the net to tie the score at 1-1 with less than fifteen minutes to play in regulation.

The Bears were not merely content with heading to overtime, though, and made their way down field again just over four minutes later on a rush. Casey McDonough fed a cross from the right side into the box, where she found teammate Julie Sullivan who headed the ball into the left side of the net past Draper to put the Bears up 2-1.

The Saints showed some toughness though and worked hard to earn the equalizer. Some beautiful ball movement earned Sischo an off-balance shot from inside the box. Though Schlosser was out of position, the sophomore’s shot went just high over the cross bar.

St. Lawrence continued to pepper the Bridgewater keeper, but Schlosser was solid and kept the Saints from scoring again, preserving the come-from-behind victory for the Bears.

St. Lawrence tallied fifteen shots on goal to Bridgewater State’s five, but Schlosser was the difference and she made fourteen saves while earning her first win of the year (1-0-0). Draper finished the season opener with three saves while taking the loss (0-1-0).

Bridgewater State will face Clarkson in the early game on Sunday for the 2006 Lotto North Country Classic Championship, as the Golden Knights defeated Utica College 2-1 in the second game at MacAllaster Field on Saturday.

In a very even match-up, Clarkson grabbed an early lead in the 18 th minute as Deana Huntley fed a cross into the box from the right side. Her pass landed on the foot of Jinna Stugart, who tipped the pass into the next past Utica’s goalkeeper Ashley Kaufman to give Clarkson the 1-0 edge.

However, the Pioneers bounced right back only 6:38 later when Kelly Regan fed a beautiful pass of a free kick from just outside the box to Kerry Walsh to the keeper’s right. Walsh faked out Clarkson’s keeper Meagan Emlaw and fired a shot into the open net to even the score at 1-1.

The two teams remained deadlocked until Utica fouled a Clarkson forward, setting up a free kick for the Golden Knights. Emily Mahar took the kick for Clarkson, and found a wide open Karyn Cioppa just inside the box. Cioppa turned and buried a shot from close range to put Clarkson ahead with just 10:43 remaining in the game.

From that point on, the spotlight belonged to Emlaw. The Clarkson keeper was fantastic in the final minutes, with the Pioneers earning six corners in the final nine minutes. However, Emlaw made every big save, including a diving stop to her left on Utica’s Danielle Smith on a shot that surely would’ve found the top-left corner of the goal.

Emlaw’s play sealed the win for Clarkson, setting up tomorrow’s 1:00pm championship game with Bridgewater State at Sandy MacAllaster Field. Directly following that game will be the St. Lawrence Saints squaring off against Utica at 3:30pm.

BEALER, MAHONEY, PODHAIZER, AND

DRAPER TO CAPTAIN SAINTS IN 2006

Aug. 22: The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team has announced the captains for the 2006 season, which is set to begin on Saturday, September 2nd at Sandy MacAllaster Field versus Bridgewater State in the Lotto Tournament at 1:00pm.

Head coach Deb Biche has turned to four seniors for leadership in hopes of guiding the Saints back to the post-season in 2006. With ten incoming first year students on the pre-season roster, the Saints will need their four senior captains to exhibit character and desire if they're to make a run at the Liberty League Championship. The captains for this season will be Samantha Bealer, Alana Mahoney, Zippy Podhaizer, and Carly Draper.

"With such a young team this season, the leadership from our captains will be vital to our success," said Biche. "We will be counting on them to bring this team together quickly in the pre-season and maintain the team chemistry throughout the year."

Bealer, a native of Darien, CT, has played an outstanding midfield over the past three seasons in the scarlet and brown. She has started 30 games in her career thus far, scoring six goals and notching two assists.

Podhaizer will look to anchor the defensive line this season after losing several key players along the back line. The Essex, VT native has started 49 games for St. Lawrence and has done an excellent job protecting the Saints keeper.

Mahoney was an outstanding role player last year for the Saints, showing great hustle and work ethic throughout the season. She played in all 16 games last season, including six starts. She has two goals and two assists in her career under Coach Biche, and will look to add to those numbers in her senior season.

Finally, Draper will be the Saints backstop again this season after a fantastic junior season. The Ottawa, ONT native has played in 49 career games in the Saints goal, stopping 246 of 323 shots for a .762 save percentage. She has 17 shutouts to her credit, and enters the 2006 season with a goals against average of 1.57.

"I am very excited to have these four athletes act as our captains this season. As seniors, they will be great mentors to the younger players and each has demonstrated her own unique leadership ability," said Biche.
