SAINTS DROP 2-1 DECISION TO NAZARETH

Oct. 1: The St. Lawrence women’s soccer team lost to regional powerhouse Nazareth today2-1 today at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Nazareth’s Kristina Cristofori beat a couple Saint defenders, and found the bottom right corner of the net with 1:53 left in the first half to break the 0-0 tie. SLU’s best chance in the first half came off of a corner kick by Alana Mahoney. Mahoney booted the ball in front of the goal and it bounced around until first year Zoe Bludevich got a foot on it, but Nazareth goalie Shannon Burns dove on it for the save.

At the end of the first half, the Saints had taken 6 shots to Nazareth’s 7, and each goalie had recorded 3 saves a piece. The Golden Flyers were awarded 4 corner kicks to SLU’s 1 chance.

In the 75 th minute of the game, the action picked up when Nazareth’s Julie Birbilis booted a corner kick into the goalie box, where it met Rachel Cushman who got a foot on it, but Sam Bealer came up huge for the Saints and earned the team save by clearing it at the last second.

Then, just three minutes later, Cristofori threaded a ball through to Cushman who found the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-0 Nazareth.

They would need both goals, as in the 83 rd minute, first year Lauren Sischo shot a ball from 40 yards out that bounced off the crossbar, and went in. The Saints had another chance before that when Zippy Podhaizer booted a free kick into the goalie box where Mallory Wilder was waiting, but booted it just high for the near miss.

With just 15 seconds remaining, Leah Yandow launched a free kick from 30 yards out that just cleared the crossbar and would have tied the game.

On the day, Saints goalkeeper Carly Draper saved 7 goals; Shannon Burns and Holly Sands combined for 6 saves for Nazareth.

The Saints are back in action on Oct. 7 th at Vassar at 4:00pm to return to Liberty League action. On the year, SLU is now 4-3-1; Nazareth moves to 7-3-0.

SAINTS TIE PLATTSBURGH AT HOME

Sept. 28: Two overtimes would not be enough for either team to earn a win, as the St. Lawrence women’s soccer team fought Plattsburgh for 110 minutes of scoreless action today at MacAllaster Field.

Lauren Sischo had a chance with 9 minutes left in the second overtime, but it sailed just wide. Both teams had chances, with the Saints taking 6 shots on goal, and the Cardinals taking 10 shots on goal.

At the end of regulation, the score remained knotted at 0-0. SLU had taken 11 shots to Plattsburgh’s 14, even though the Cardinals had taken a startling 11 corners to the Saints 1 chance. Draper had 7 saves, Larocke made 6 by the end of 90 minutes.

The Saints will face Nazareth on Saturday at home at 2:00pm. With the tie, SLU moves to 4-2-1 on the year, Plattsburgh moves 4-4-1 for the season.
