
YANDOW HONORED BY LEAGUE
Sept. 7: Leah Yandow earned Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week honors for her efforts last weekend in the Lotto Classic. Yandow was the tournament MVP, and scored the game winning goal against Oswego.
ST. LAWRENCE WINS LOTTO NORTH COUNTRY CLASSIC
Sept. 4: Most Valuable Player Leah Yandow scored on a direct kick early on in the second half as St. Lawrence University defeated Oswego State 1-0 in what proved to be the championship game of the Lotto North Country Classic this weekend at Clarkson Field.
In a foul-laden game, Yandow was awarded a direct kick just outside the 18-yard box and scored at the 56:42 mark for the game’s only score.
Carly Draper made four saves for her second straight shutout and was selected to the All-Tournament team for St. Lawrence. Also named to the All-Tournament team for the Saints were Zippy Podhaizer, Lauren Sischo, who scored Saturday’s goal for the Saints, and Whitney Huse.
Ashlee Distin stopped four shots for Oswego State and was also named to the All-Tournament team for the Lakers. Joining Distin with all-star nods were teammates Maureen Kasperek, who scored the game-winner for the Lakers on Saturday, and Morgan Vrydaghs.
St. Lawrence out shot the Lakers by a slim 8-7 margin and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Oswego State was whistled for 25 fouls in the game while St. Lawrence was caught on 13.
The Saints will face Clarkson at home in their next game on Sept. 14 at 4:00pm. This will be their first Liberty League match-up of the year.
SAINTS BEGIN SEASON 1-0 WITH WIN OVER PLYMOUTH STATE
Sept. 3: In the second game of the opening round of the Lotto Classic, St. Lawrence University picked up a 1-0 victory, downing Plymouth State .
Freshman Lauren Sischo earned her first collegiate goal late in the first half when she scored in front of the goal on a pass from classmate Caitlin Quinn at the 38:16 mark.
St. Lawrence controlled play with a 15-3 advantage in shots and a 6-0 hold in cornerkicks. Despite the Saints play, Plymouth State enjoyed some solid chances, but could not convert to tie the score.
Carly Draper made two saves for the shutout for St. Lawrence while Hayley Quinones made eight stops in net for the Panthers.
CIFUENTES WILL ASSIST
IN
WOMEN’S SOCCER IN 2005
Neil Cifuentes will be joining the women’s soccer team for
the 2005 season as an assistant coach replacing Roman Escobar in
that capacity. He will be making this transition along with his new
role in the Athletic Department as the Coordinator of Student/Athlete
Services.
“We are truly excited to have Neil join our staff this year,” said
Head Coach Deb Biche. “What’s not to like about having
a St. Lawrence University graduate with his experience join our team
particularly on a full-time basis.”
Cifuentes will assist the women’s program after working on
the men’s side this past season. He also worked with the men
while pursuing his graduate degree, a stint which included the 1999
run to the NCAA Division III National Championship. Before returning
to St. Lawrence last season he taught and coached at the Taft School,
taking his soccer team to the New England prep school semifinals.
He also taught at the Elwood Middle School and John Glenn High School
on Long Island and coached the middle school soccer team.He has trained
youth soccer teams on Long Island and has coached at a number of
soccer camps. Neil is an experienced Coerver Coaching Instructor.
“I look forward to having the opportunity to bounce ideas
off of Neil and work together to continue the development of our
program. We are privileged to have someone with his skill and expertise
on board,” Biche said.
