MORSE TALLIES GAME WINNER IN SUDDEN DEATH; SAINTS DEFEAT SPRINGFIELD 13-12 Mar. 21: First-year Kim Morse tallied her second game winner of the week Friday morning as her free position goal gave the St. Lawrence women’s lacrosse team a victory against Springfield College, with the Saints defeating the Pride 13-12 in double overtime at the 2008 Spring Fling, held at Lake Lytal Park in West Palm Beach, Florida.
After a scoreless first overtime, both teams battled for control of the ball in sudden death, with Springfield taking two shots on goal in the period and rookie Anna Marchand (Concord, MA/Middlesex) coming up big in goal for St. Lawrence, saving both of them from hitting the back of the net.
With three seconds left, Springfield fouled Morse (Peaks Island, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) inside the 8-meter, giving her a free position shot. Morse sealed the win for the Saints after slipping the ball past Pride goalie Lauren McAulay to give the Scarlet and Brown the 13-12 win.
St. Lawrence, who are now 3-1 overall, won all three games this week in West Palm Beach, while Springfield fell to 2-3 following the loss.
Springfield was first on the scoreboard after a free position goal less than four minutes into the contest, but sophomore Lexi Wisnowski (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury Union) followed with her own shot from the 8-meter to tie the game 1-1 and spark a 3-0 run for the Saints, which included goals from sophomore Mary Jane Sweetland (Hopewell, NJ/Stuart Country Day) and junior Amanda Forbes (Glens Falls, NY/ Glens Falls), to give them a 3-1 lead with 18:59 left in the first.
The Saints never relinquished their lead in the first, despite a number of close calls from the Pride, who brought it within one goal on a number of occasions, before St. Lawrence climbed out ahead to grab a 9-5 lead heading into halftime.
The second half saw the Pride storm back as they accumulated five goals in the first fifteen minutes of the period, three from Erin Doolan, while the Saints scored one from Morse in the same amount of time as Springfield tied the Saints 10-10. Forbes scored on a free position with 14:20 left to give the Saints an 11-10 edge that they held until Springfield scored with 8:59 left in regulation.
The teams traded goals in the final minutes, with St. Lawrence maintaining the lead after a goal from senior co-captain Alanna Waters (Darien, CT/Taft) with 6:53 to go, but the Pride came back to score with two seconds remaining to tie the game 12-12, sending the game into its first overtime, which ended scoreless after six minutes of intense play on both sides of the field.

SAINTS EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN 11-10 OT WIN OVER SCRANTON Mar. 19: The lone overtime goal by rookie Kim Morse proved to be the game winner for the St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team on Wednesday morning as the Saints defeated Scranton 11-10 in the second Spring Fling game of their spring training trip in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The goal by Morse (Peaks Island, ME/North Yarmouth), which was assisted by senior co-captain Alanna Waters (Darien, CT/Taft) helped the Saints improve to 2-1, while the Royals fell 2-3.
Scranton opened up a low-scoring first half with two goals from Caroline Pryor before St. Lawrence went up on the board after a foul was called on the Royals, sending junior Amanda Forbes (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) to the 8-meter for a free position shot. The midfielder was able to tuck it in behind the Scranton keeper to cut down the Royals lead 2-1 with 17:35 remaining in the half.
Less than two and a half minutes later, Pryor was on the eight after a St. Lawrence foul and was able to give Scranton a 3-1 lead after scoring her third of the contest. Both teams remained scoreless for the next six minutes before Morse got the ball from Waters and put it between the posts with 9:19 to go to bring the Saints back within one, as the scoreboard read 3-2.
The Scarlet and Brown scored two unanswered goals from Forbes and Waters, giving the Saints their first lead of the contest, to close out the half with a 4-3 edge over the Royals.
The second half demonstrated to all at Lake Lytal Park how evenly matched the two teams were, as St. Lawrence scored six goals, with two from both Forbes and sophomore Julie Wooters (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), and one a piece from Morse and sophomore Mary Jane Sweetland (Hopewell, NJ/Stuart Country Day),to counter four Scranton goals and gain a three-goal lead, the biggest lead of the contest, 10-7, with just over nine minutes left to play.

SAINTS DEFEAT MT. HOLYOKE 17-11 AT SPRING FLING Mar. 17: The St. Lawrence women’s lacrosse team didn’t need a four-leaf clover this St. Patrick’s Day, as the Saints were able to capitalize on their strong transition play to earn their first win of their 2008 campaign, defeating non-conference opponent Mt. Holyoke 17-11 at the 2008 Spring Fling at Lake Lytal Park in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The Saints, who never relinquished the lead throughout the entire 60 minutes of play, improve to 1-1 overall with the win, while the Lions fell 1-3 in their season.
Sophomore Mary Jane Sweetland (Hopewell, NJ/Stuart Country Day) opened up the scoring efforts for St. Lawrence with two goals within the first 2:25 of the contest, assisted by senior co-captains Liz Skinner (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Alanna Waters (Darien, CT/The Taft School), respectively. First-year Kaitlyn Fahsel (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson), who was named Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Week after Friday’s performance at Nazareth, drove the ball to the net to score the Saints’ third, while junior Amanda Forbes (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls), who led the Saints in scoring in 2007, pushed St. Lawrence to a 4-0 lead after scoring on a free position.
Mt. Holyoke’s Peggy Wefald then contributed three points, scoring two goals and adding an assist, to close the Saints’ lead 4-3 with 18:57 to go in the first. Less than 45 seconds later, first-year Kim Morse (Peaks Island, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) would begin what would be an outstanding offensive game with a shot in between the posts off a touch from Waters to give the Saints a 5-3 edge.
Waters and Morse tallied one a piece before Mt. Holyoke was able find their way to the net again, as Wefald and teammate Ava Gottschall both had a goal in an attempt to close in on St. Lawrence, who was still out ahead 7-3 with 13 minutes left in the half.
