2005 Women's Lacrosse Archives Results CHERRY EARNS ECAC ALL-STAR HONORS June 2: St. Lawrence University senior lacrosse standout Carolyn Cherry was named to the 2005 ECAC Division III Upstate All-Star team on Thursday. Cherry led the Saints this season in points and goals with her fourth consecutive 50+ point season. Her 50 goals led the league this season and she scored her 200th career goal in the Saints game against Rensselaer. She finished her career with 210 goals, 41 assists and 251 points. CHERRY EARNS ALL AMERICA, DURKI IS ALL STATE May 24: St. Lawrence University senior lacrosse standout Carolyn Cherry earned third team national All America honors in voting by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. Cherry was also named first team New York State Regional All America and was selected to the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association first team and the ECAC Upstate first team. The Saint senior led her team in scoring and had her fourth straight 50 or more point season. She finished her career with 210 goals, 41 assists and 251 points. Joining Cherry on the NYSWCAA all star squad was sophomore midfielder Kathryn Durki, who was named to the second team. The Canton native had 16 goals and seven assists this past season and led the Saints in draw controls. EXPERIENCED YOUTH RETURN IN 2006 FOR SAINTS May 12: The St. Lawrence Women’s Lacrosse Team, like their male counterparts, entered the 2005 season with a youthful roster. Head Coach Jodi Axtell entered a tough schedule with just three seniors and six juniors. Seventeen freshmen and sophomores were on the roster. However, the Saints went 9-5 on the season, including a 5-3 mark in the Liberty League, and advanced to the Liberty League Championship. During the regular season, the Saints defeated nationally-ranked William Smith and Hamilton. In the league semi-finals, St. Lawrence beat Skidmore 13-10 to advance to the finals to face nationally-ranked Union. The Dutchwomen defeated the Saints and earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Seven Saints were honored by the Liberty League, including senior captain Carolyn Cherry who was earned First-Team honors. Senior Carolyn Gioia, and juniors Meghan Clement and Avery Cushman earned second-team honors. While senior Emi Seibert, sophomore Kathryn Durki and freshman Michaela Wipfler were named to the honorable mention squad. Six Saints posted double-digit point totals, with Cherry leading the way with 59 points, including 50 goals. In 2006, the Saints Women’s Lacrosse Team will look to make an even bigger impact, as 23 players return for Coach Axtell. Among those returning are five of the Saints six leading scorers in 2005. Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly, Meghan Clement, Lis Reade Kathryn Durki and Erin Mellow all tallied 20 or more points this season. SAINTS FALL 18-6 TO UNION IN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH SCHENECTADY , N.Y. – Molly Flanagan scored six goals and assisted on three others as 16 th ranked Union College won the Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Championship with an 18-6 victory over St. Lawrence Sunday at Frank Bailey Field. The victory, Union 's 12 th straight, earned the Dutchwomen the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. It will be the third trip to the NCAA for the program. Union , the top seed in the Liberty League tournament, improved to 13-3 while St. Lawrence, the third seed, fell to 9-5. Sophomore Kathryn Durki led St. Lawrence with three goals and senior captain Carolyn Cherry scored two tallies for the Saints. Flanagan, the league's Player of the Year and the pre-season Player of the Year by US Lacrosse, helped turn a 3-0 deficit into a 7-5 Union lead at halftime. She now has 51 goals and 17 assists for 68 points. Kathy Dolezal had four goals and an assist along with 11 shots on goal and nine ground balls for Union , while Caitlin Cuozzo scored four goals and led the Dutchwomen with 10 ground balls. Tanya Davis and Alexandra Toney scored twice each for Union . Union outshot St. Lawrence, 41-17 for the game, including 24-6 in the second half. The teams each won 13 draw controls, while Union had a 53-39 ground ball advantage. St. Lawrence goaltender Rebecca Timbers made 12 saves in over 43 minutes of play, while reserve netminder Cynthia Saul stopped four shots. Union goalie Rachel Beckman made six saves. St. Lawrence led 3-0 with 16:08 left in the first half, highlighted by two goals by Durki. The Saints later had a 5-3 lead when Durki scored her third of the day with 6:43 left in the first half. But goals by Dolezal at 4:10 and Cuozzo at 2:44 tied it for the Dutchwomen. Flanagan scored with 44 seconds remaining and again with just 32 seconds left in the first half for a 7-5 Union lead. The Dutchwomen scored the next 11 goals of the game.
SAINTS TOP SKIDMORE 13-10; WILL FACE UNION FOR LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP May 7: The Saints Women’s Lacrosse Team (9-4) used an eight-goal second half to defeat the Skidmore Thoroughbreds (12-4) 13-10 in the Liberty League Semi-finals at Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady, N.Y. Saturday afternoon. Junior captain Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly and sophomore Lis Reade led the Saints with four goals each in the win. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers posted 10 saves for the Saints. Reade scored the first two goals of the game to give St. Lawrence an early lead with just 6:24 elapsed in the game. Skidmore’s Kate Shea scored at 10:23 to make the game 2-1, but Whitaker-Rahilly answered just 14 seconds later to push the lead back to two goals. Katie Weber scored again for the Thorougbreds to cut the lead to 3-2, but once again the Saints answered with goals from Whitaker-Rahilly and Kathryn Durki. The Saints held a 5-2 lead with 6:52 to play but Skidmore would score three goals in 3:04 to knot the game at 5-5 heading into the half. St. Lawrence opened the half with three goals to take an 8-3 lead. Reade had two goals, sandwiching Whitaker-Rahilly’s goal to open the second. Skidmore got goals from Lizzy Dickson and Katie Weber to make the score 8-5 with 13:44 to play. The Saints then reeled off four goals, from Whitaker-Rahilly, Erin Mellow and Carolyn Cherry, in less than three minutes to push the lead up to 12-5. Skidmore scored three of the final four goals to come as close as 13-10, but the Saints held off the rally to earn the win. For Skidmore Sarah Berheide made seven saves in the loss. The Saints will face the host Union Dutchwomen, the No.1 seed, in the championship game on Sunday. The game is set for 12:00 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field. The winner will take the 2005 Liberty League Championship, but will also earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. CHERRY NAMED FIRST-TEAM LIBERTY LEAGUE; SIX SAINTS HONORED May 6: The Liberty League announced the all-conference awards Friday morning and six Saints Women's Lacrosse players were honored. Leading the pack was senior captain Carolyn Cherry who earned First-Team Liberty League honors. Senior Carolyn Gioia, and juniors Meghan Clement and Avery Cushman earned second-team honors. While senior Emi Seibert, sophomore Kathryn Durki and freshman Michaela Wipfler were named to the honorable mention squad. Cherry leads the Saints this season in points and goals with her fourth consecutive 50+ point season. Her 45 goals leads the league this season and she scored her 200th career goal in the Saints game against Rensselaer. With 52 points in 12 games, she leads the league in points per Gioia is a defensive minded midfielder with excellent field vision. She is great with ground balls, interceptions and draw controls. She is second on the team with 17 draw controls and is tied for the lead with 13 caused turnovers. game and goals per game and ranks 12th in the nation in goals per game. Clement, with 14 assists, leads the Saints in assists and leads the league in assists per game. She is second on the team with 28 points. Her 14 goals this season is a new career high. She earned Player of the Week honors on March 28 as the Saints swept their Liberty League opening weekend with a 15-13 win over Rochester and a 12-11 overtime win at William Smith. Cushman is a strong third man. She is legendary for the forearm bruises to the attack because of her textbook horizontal stick position. She leads the defensive unit in ground balls with 25 and has excellent speed. She scored from her defensive position against Rensselaer, for her first career goal. She has caused five turnovers, while committing just three. Seibert is a great crease defender who does not foul a lot. She has excellent stick work for denial defense. She has 10 ground balls, five caused turnovers with just three committed. Wipfler stepped into a starting role for the Saints on defense in her rookie season. She has 19 ground balls and five caused turnovers. She is a standout defender with excellent footwork. Despite her youth, her role every week has been to mark the best players in the league. Durki is a strong center who can direct anywhere. With great speed, she is a very efficient connector, with 12 goals and seven assists this season. She has excellent field vision and leads the team in ground balls and draw controls. In just the fifth game of the season, she surpassed her point goal, assist and point totals from last season. The Saints return to action on Saturday against the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in the semi-finals of the Liberty League Tournament hosted by Union College. The Saints and the Thoroughbreds will face-off at 1:30 p.m. on Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady, N.Y. Union and Hamilton will meet at 11:00 a.m. Sunday's championship game will be at 12 p.m., and the winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships. SAINTS TO FACE THOROUGHBREDS IN SEMI-FINALS SATURDAY May 4: The Saints Women’s Lacrosse team (8-4, 5-3) will face the Skidmore Thoroughbreds (12-3, 7-1) in the Liberty League Semi-finals Saturday at 1:30 at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. The Saints are seeded No.3 in the tournament with a 5-3 league mark. Skidmore is the No.2 seed with a 7-1 league mark. Union, the host, is the No.1 seed and will face the No.4 seed Hamilton Continentals in the 11:00 game Saturday. The winners will face off on Sunday in the championship game. SAINTS TOP BEARS 17-9 IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE Apr. 26: The Saints Women’s Lacrosse team (8-4, 5-3) defeated the Potsdam Bears (4-9, 1-5) in their final regular season game on Tuesday in Potsdam , N.Y. St. Lawrence held an 11-6 lead at the half. Senior captain Carolyn Cherry led the Saints with three goals while sophomore Cynthia Saul posted a career-high 14 saves in the win. The 17 goals is the most this season for the Saints, topping a 16-11 win over Union on April 1. Potsdam scored the game’s first goal less than five minutes into the game. St. Lawrence answered back with a flurry of seven goals before the Bears scored again. The Saints opened the half with four unanswered goals to push their lead to 15-6. Juniors Wendy Berner, Meg Getsinger and Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly, and freshman Alana Waters tallied two each in the win for St. Lawrence. Mollie Lacek led Potsdam with three goals and one assist. Bears goalie Laura Mooney made 13 saves while giving up 15 goals in 52 minutes of play. Reliever Erin Wright allowed two goals and made one save. The Saints are idle as they prepare for the 2005 Liberty League Tournament at Union College . St. Lawrence returns to the league tournament for the first time since 2003. Skidmore and Hamilton join St. Lawrence and Union in the Liberty League Tournament. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 7 in Schenectady , with the finals on Sunday. NAZARETH HOLDS OFF SAINTS RALLY IN 9-8 WIN Apr. 23: The Nazareth Golden Flyers held a 5-4 lead at the half before holding off a late Saints rally for a 9-8 win in women’s lacrosse action at North Country Field in Canton, N.Y. Saturday afternoon. St. Lawrence falls to 7-4 overall while Nazareth improves to 10-2. Despite the loss, the Saints learned they would be making the trip to the Liberty League Tournament in two weeks. St. Lawrence took a quick 2-0 lead with just 1:40 gone in the game with goals from Kathryn Durki and Carolyn Gioia. Nazareth then jumped out to a 4-2 lead at 8:24 with goals from Melissa Passno, Betsy Carney and two from Kim Kreskow. Lis Reade scored for the Saints to trim the lead to 4-3 at 11:23 in the first. Durki scored her second of the day with 5:55 to play in the opening half to knot the score at 4-4. Kristyn Lingenfelter scored with 1:18 to play to give Nazareth a 5-4 lead heading into the half. The Golden Flyers came out firing in the second half, taking a 8-4 lead with 16:44 to play in the game. Meghan Clement scored for St. Lawrence at 15:05 as the Saints began chipping away at the lead. But Allison Bayer pushed Nazareth’s lead back to 9-5 with 10:45 to play. Carolyn Cherry then scored two quick goals, followed by Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly to cut the lead to 9-8 with 6:12 to play. However, the Nazareth defense stood strong despite late turnovers and kept the Saints from scoring the game-tying goal. Rebecca Timbers posted six saves in net for the Saints, while Lindsey Burgess had 12 in the win for Nazareth. The Saints return to action on Tuesday, April 26 as they travel to Potsdam to face the Bears in their final game of the regular season. RED HAWKS END SAINTS WIN STREAK WITH 10-7 WIN Apr. 16: Rensselaer broke a 4-4 halftime tie with five of the first six goals of the second half and the Red Hawks went on to defeat St. Lawrence, 10-7, in a Liberty League contest. Rensselaer’s Hilary Lahn led the way with four goals and two assists while Natalie White tallied three times. St. Lawrence falls to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in league play. Rensselaer is now 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the league. Junior captain Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead at 5:10 in the first half. White answered at 9:12 for RPI to tie the game at 1-1. Whitaker-Rahilly scored her second of the afternoon at 8:29 to once again give St. Lawrence the lead. The Red Hawks then scored three times to take a 4-2 lead with 4:02 to play in the half. Sophomore Julia Palmateer scored her first of the season with 3:36 to play, trimming the lead to 4-3. Whitaker-Rahilly scored her third of the day with just 33 seconds left in the half to knot the score at 4-4 heading into the intermission. RPI came out firing, scoring three quick goals to take at 7-4 lead at 9:07 into the second. Senior captain Carolyn Cherry scored her first of the day at 9:33 to cut the lead to 7-5, but the Red Hawks answered with two goals from Lahn to push the lead to 9-5 with 11 minutes to play in the game. Cherry scored again at 19:31, cutting the lead to 9-6 but once again RPI answered. Lahn scored with 9:24 to play to push the Red Hawks lead to 10-6 on a free position shot. Junior Avery Cushman scored on a free position shot with 1:31 to play to make the score 10-7 but that was the end of the scoring as the Red Hawks held off the Saints for the win. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers made six saves in the loss. Meghan Gaul stopped eight shots in the win for Rensselaer. The Saints return home to face Nazareth in non-league action on Saturday, April 23 at 2:00 at North Country Field. SAINTS TOP BREWERS 10-9 Apr. 15: The Saints Women’s Lacrosse team improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in Liberty League action with a 10-9 road win over the Vassar Brewers Friday afternoon. The Brewers fell to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in league action. Junior captain Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly led the Saints with four goals and one assist. Vassar opened the scoring at 2:42 with a goal from Jessica Johnson. St. Lawrence answered at 4:54 when Kathryn Durki scored to knot the score at 1-1. Christine Castellan scored at 10:18 for the Brewers to take the lead. Senior captain Carolyn Cherry scored her first of the day to tie the score again at 13:02. Kristin Hogan scored for Vassar three minutes later to give the Brewers the lead again. Whitaker-Rahilly then scored twice with under ten minutes to play in the half to give St. Lawrence a 4-3 lead heading into the break. The Saints came out firing in the second half, scoring four goals in the first seven minutes to take an 8-3 lead. Castellan and Ali Fantl scored for Vassar to cut the lead to 8-5 but the Saints answered with goals from sophomores Kathryn Durki and Erin Mellow to push the lead back up to 10-5. Castellan and Hogan scored two goals each for Vassar with under ten minutes to play in the game to cut the score to 10-9. But that’s as close as the Brewers got as the Saints held on for the win. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers made nine saves in net for the Saints, improving to 6-2 on the season. Ariel Nelson made eight saves in the loss for Vassar. St. Lawrence will face the Rensselaer Engineers at 2:00 on Saturday, April 16 in Troy, N.Y. as they conclude Liberty League play. CHERRY NAMED LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Apr. 11: Senior co-captain Carolyn Cherry was honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon. She was name the league's Offensive Performer of the Week. Cherry led the Saints last week to league wins over Clarkson and Hamilton with 11 goals and one assist. Against the Golden Knights on Tuesday, she scored seven goals and added one assist. Her goal at 11:36 in the second proved to be the gamewinner. On Saturday, against Hamilton, Cherry scored four goals in the Saints 12-11 overtime win. Her fourth goal of the game came on a free position shot at 10:20 that tied the game at 9-9. SAINTS TOP CONTINENTALS 12-11 IN TRIPLE OVERTIME Apr. 9: Junior Meghan Clement scored twice, including in overtime to lead the Saints Women’s Lacrosse Team to a 12-11 win over the Hamilton Continentals in Liberty League action at North Country Field Saturday afternoon. The Saints improve to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in league play. Hamilton falls to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. Hamilton opened the scoring, just 1:37 into the game with a goal from Inga Stots. The Saints answered at 2:08, when captain Carolyn Cherry scored her first goal of the game. Cherry scored again at 6:07 to give St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead. Erin Mellow pushed the lead to 3-1 with a goal at 6:49. Caitlin Jacobs scored for the Continentals to trim the lead to 3-2 at 14:21 in the first half. Kathryn Durki scored her first of the game at 15:18 to push the lead back up to 4-2. Hamilton answered again, this time from Nicole Tetreault to cut the lead again to 4-3 at 16:40. Durki scored her second of the day to once again give St. Lawrence a two-goal cushion at 20:09. But the Continentals did not back down and scored twice in the last 72 seconds to knot the score at 5-5 heading into the half. Nicole Barrett scored for Hamilton at 3:27 into the second to take a 6-5 lead for the Continentals. St. Lawrence answered with goals from Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly and Mellow to retake the lead at 7-6 with 16:31 to play in regulation. Hamilton took the lead with two free position goals, from Barrett and Suzy Belmont with 12:59 to play. The teams then traded goals, Caitlin Jacobs scoring with just 23.7 seconds remaining in the game to give Hamilton a 10-9 lead. But Clement came up big off the draw control, scoring her first of the game with just 4.9 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime. In the first overtime, Mellow scored to give St. Lawrence an 11-10 lead, but Hamilton answered in the second overtime with a goal from Belmont, with just 11 seconds remaining to send it to a third overtime. Clement ended the game with her second goal of the day, 2:11 into the third overtime. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers finished with 11 saves in the win for St. Lawrence. Kalley Greer posted six saves in the loss for Hamilton. After five consecutive home games, the Saints hit the road to take on Vassar and Rensselaer in Liberty League action. St. Lawrence will face Vassar on April 15 at 4:00 and Rensselaer on the April 16 at 2:00. CHERRY SCORES SEVEN TO LEAD SAINTS PAST CLARKSON Apr. 5: Senior captain Carolyn Cherry scored seven goals in the Saints 13-10 win over Liberty League rival Clarkson Tuesday afternoon at North Country Field. St. Lawrence improves to 5-2 overall with a 3-2 mark in Liberty League play. The Golden Knights fall to 0-9 and 0-5 in the league. Clarkson is winless in the series with the Saints (0-30). Clarkson struck first when Lindsey Grigg scored the first of her five goals just 1:25 into the game. The Saints responded with four unanswered goals from Cherry, Lis Reade and Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly to take a 4-1 lead by 10:33. Lindsay Roberts scored two quick goals to cut the lead to 4-3. Once again, the Saints pounded the Claarkson net, scoring four goals in two minutes to push the lead up to 8-3. Emily Cohen scored at 22:42 to trim the lead to 8-4. Cherry and Carolyn Gioia each scored to close out the half and give the Saints a 10-4 lead heading into the half. Clarkson came out firing in the second, scoring five unanswered goals in just under seven minutes to cut the lead to 10-9. Cherry scored twice more and Shannon Garrett scored her first of the season, pushing the score to 13-9. The Golden Knights’ Alice Chace closed out the scoring at 22:20 to make it 13-10. Sophomore Cynthia Saul played 41:36 in net for the Saints making 6 saves for the win. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers played 18:24 in relief and made two saves. For Clarkson, Erin Duffey made 11 saves in the loss. The Saints return to action on Saturday, April 9 against Hamilton at 3:30 on North Country Field. SAINTS FALL TO SKIDMORE 9-3 IN RAINY GAME Apr. 2: The Saint Women’s Lacrosse Team (4-2, 2-2) fell 9-3 to Skidmore (6-1, 3-0) in a cold and rainy Liberty League game at North Country Field Saturday afternoon. Kate Shea scored three goals for the Thoroughbreds in the win. Skidmore opened the scoring at 5:09 in the first half with a goal from Lizzy Dickinson. Lis Reade tied it for the Saints at 9:12 . Fourteen seconds later, Megan McAdams scored to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-1 lead. Liz Prentke and Shea scored midway through the half to extend the lead to 4-1. Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly scored at 20:36 for St. Lawrence, followed by Meghan Clement at 24:27 to trim the lead to 4-3. Annie Ledyard scored at 26:54 for Skidmore to close out the half and give the Thoroughbreds a 5-3 heading into the half. Skidmore scored four times in the second, with goals from Shea, Prentke, and Shardae Gonsalves to earn the 9-3 win. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers played the first 26 minutes for the Saints with sophomore Cynthia Saul playing 34 minutes in relief and posted nine saves. Sarah Berheide posted 12 saves in goal for Skidmore. St. Lawrence returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 at 4:00 as they host the Clarkson Golden Knights in Liberty League play at North Country Field. DUTCHWOMEN TOP SAINTS 16-11 Apr. 1: In a windy and cold game at North Country Field, the Saints Women’s Lacrosse team (4-1, 2-1) suffered its first loss of the season, a 16-11 decision to the Union Dutchwomen (2-3, 1-0) in Liberty League action Friday afternoon. Senior captain Carolyn Cherry led the Saints with four goals and two assists. Down 7-6 nearing the end of the first half, Cherry scored two quick goals with under 25 seconds to play to give St. Lawrence an 8-7 lead at the half. Sophomore Kathryn Durki scored just 1:10 into the second to push the Saints lead to 9-7. But the Dutchwomen responded with two goals in 53 seconds to knot the score at 9-9. Junior Meghan Clement then scored to retake the lead for St. Lawrence at 6:18. Union once again answered, this time with four unanswered to take a 13-10 lead. Clement scored again just 12 seconds after the third goal to cut the lead to 13-11. That was as close as it got, as the Dutchwomen scored three more goals to close out the half and take a 16-11 win. Clement, sophomore Erin Mellow and Durki each had three points for the Saints. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers posted a career-high 15 saves in net for St. Lawrence. Kathy Dolezal led Union with seven goals and Erin Lawson added five more. Rachel Beckman made one save and Steph Burlton made two saves as the pair shared time in net for Union. The Saints return to action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. on North Country Field as they face the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in Liberty League action. SIX SAINTS NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM Mar. 29: Six Saints Women’s Lacrosse Student-Athletes were named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team. To be eligible, student-athletes must be atleast a sophomore and post a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Junior Wendy Berner ( Hamburg, NY) is an Economic and Music major. Sophomore Julia Palmateer, from Canton, N.Y., is a Math and Psychology major. Sophomore Rebecca Timbers, from Underhill, Vt., is majoring in Environmental Studies and Biology. Sophomore Erin Mellow, from Grantham, N.H., is a Math and Psychology major. Junior Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly, from Needham, Mass., is a History major. Junior Meghan Getsinger, from Darien, Conn., is a Fine Arts Major. SAINTS TO LAKERS 12-5 IN HOME OPENER Mar. 29: Senior Carolyn Cherry led the Saints with eight goals as the St. Lawrence Women’s Lacrosse Team remained undefeated at 4-0 with a 12-5 win over the Oswego Lakers (4-2) Tuesday afternoon at North Country Field. Sophomore Becky Timbers posted a career-high 14 saves in net for the Saints. St. Lawrence took a quick 1-0 lead, just 38 seconds into the game with a goal senior captain Carolyn Gioia. The Lakers answered at 3:13, when Kathryn Carbonaro scored to knot the game. The Saints then scored six unanswered to take a 8-2 lead into the half, with four goals coming from Cherry. Sophomore Lis Reade and junior Meghan Clement also scored during the stretch. Oswego’s Jamie Collins finally scored for the Lakers at 9:28 remaining in the half. Cherry closed out the scoring with her fifth of the game with 6:30 to play in the first. Oswego started the second half with two quick goals, scoring at 54 seconds and 3:49 into the half. Ashley Maltagliati and Brooke Eldridge scored for the Lakers. Cherry then scored twice in 58 seconds to extend the Saints lead to 10-4. Clement scored her second of the day at 9:10 to add to the lead. Oswego’s Michelle Mendell trimmed the lead to 11-5 when she scored with 8:31 to play. Cherry scored the final goal with 1:21 remaining to close out the scoring. Oswego’s Lauren Burrows made three saves for the Lakers in the loss. St. Lawrence returns to action as Union and Skidmore travel to Canton for a Liberty League series this weekend. The Saints and the Dutchwomen face-off on Friday at 4:00 on North Country Field. CLEMENT, SKINNER EARN LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS March 28: Meghan Clement and Liz Skinner were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon. Clement was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Skinner was named the Co-Rookie of the Week. Clement cored three goals and assisted on five others in a 15-13 Liberty League win at Rochester and scored the game winning goal 1:48 into the fourth overtime as the Saints swept their Liberty League opening weekend with a 12-11 win at William Smith on Saturday. Clement had five goals and six assists in the two weekend games. Skinner scored her first two collegiate goals off the bench in the win at William Smith on Saturday. Her second, with 2:32 to play, brought the Saints to within one at 11-10 before SLU tied it with 32 seconds to go in regulation. CLEMENT GIVES SAINTS 4OT WIN AT WILLIAM SMITH, 12-11 March 26: Meghan Clement scored with 1:12 left in the fourth overtime period to give St. Lawrence University’s women’s lacrosse team its second straight win over William Smith and its first in Geneva in 15 years, 12-11 in a Liberty League game on Saturday. Clement scored her fifth goal of the season and second of the day to end the longest game in Saint women’s lacrosse history at 70:48. SLU improved to 3-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in the Liberty League while the Herons, ranked ninth nationally, fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play. The Saints controlled the draw to start the fourth overtime and drove directly to the net. Heron goalie Morgan Baird stopped Saint scoring leader Carolyn Cherry on a free position shot and on another shot before Clement found the net with the game winner. The Saints trailed early, falling behind 5-2, but rallied with three straight goals to tie the game at 5-5. The two teams traded goals in the final three minutes with Lis Reade giving the Saints a 7-6 halftime lead on a free position goal with William Smith jumped back in front in the frist seven minutes of the second dhalf and had a 11-9 lead with 5:16 to play in regulation, but Liz Skinner scored her second of the year with 2:32 to play for the Saints and Cherry scored her fifth of the game and 13 th of the year on a free position with 35 seconds to go in regulation to tie it at 11-11. Neither team scored in the first three three-minute overtime periods as Saint goaltender Rebecca Timbers saved the only two Heron shots on goal in the second overtime and Morgan Baird stopped the Saints’ first extra-session shot in the second overtime and made two saves in the fourth extra period before Clement ended it 1:48 into the fourth overtime. In addition to Cherry’s five goals, Clement had two and the lone Saint assist, Reade two and Skinner two while Susan Whittaker-Rahilly scored one. Sarah Dillon had six goals and an assist to lead the Herons. Timbers had 13 saves for the Saints while Baird had 11 saves for the Herons. The Saints will host Oswego Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in their home opener. CLEMENT LEADS SAINTS TO WIN AT ROCHESTER Mar. 25: Meghan Clement scored three goals and assisted on five others to lead visiting St. Lawrence to a 15-13 victory over the University of Rochester in women's lacrosse at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Friday GIOIA SCORES GAME WINNER WITH 32 SECONDS LEFT IN REGULATION March 23: St. Lawrence University’s women’s lacrosse team defeated Springfield College 9-8 as Carolyn Gioia scored a free position goal with 32 seconds left to give the Saints the win in a see-saw battle. A second Florida game with Amherst was cancelled midway through the second half due to severe weather. The Saints, 1-0, will open their Liberty League season at Rochester and William Smith March 25-26. The Saints fell behind 4-0 as Springfield opened the scoring midway through the first half and scored the game’s first four goals. Carolyn Cherry scored the first of her three straight for the Saints late in the first half and added two more to start the second to bring the Saints within a goal at 4-3. Springfield took a 5-3 lead, but another three goal run by the Saints put them in front at 6-5 as Erin Mellow scored the go-ahead goal with 20:43 to play. The teams then swapped goals through the final 20 minutes until Gioia’s game winner in the final seconds of regulation. Cherry led the Saints with three goals while Cathryn Durki added two goals and an assist. Susannah Whitaker-Rahilly and Lis Reade also added goals for the Saints. Goaltender Rebecca Timbers had 11 saves for the Saints while Dena Polverari had six for Springfield. STORY JOINS SAINT COACHING STAFF Aug. 18: Kate Story joins the St.Lawrence University women's lacrosse staff as an assistant coach. She is a 2004 graduate of St. Mary's Collegeof Maryland, where she competed on the nationally-ranked women's lacrosse team. A four-year starter for the Seahawks, Story was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection as well as a First-Team All-South Atlantic Regional selection. She was honored as the Division III Player of the Week by Insidelacrosse.com.
