A former St. Lawrence University lacrosse player and member of the Athletic Department Hall of Fame, Axtell said, "With big wins over Nazareth and Union last year our women showed that they can play with the best of competition. We were close to where we wanted to be last year, but this year we are there." Axtell considers this year's team different from the 2003 squad because of the diversity of the team. "We have depth this year, both on and off the field," Axtell said. A major factor in the Saints success is the newfound age depth. Last year the Saints graduated one senior and this year there are four seniors who have seen significant playing time in their last three years at St. Lawrence. Recruiting has also been key in forming the Saints team. "Recruiting has been quite successful and grown over the last few years. I contribute it entirely to the new athletic facilities and the environment of St. Lawrence-both the sports and campus atmosphere," Axtell commented. "We as coaches are very lucky to have a group of women like this. With a team this large you never know what personalities you will have, but all the women are friends and they help each other which is another component of our success," Axtell said. Newcomers include former All-State Patricia Ball in the attack position and joining her is Shannon Garrett. Julia Palmateer, who is also a member of the St. Lawrence University Women's Hockey Team, and Erin Mellow will play at midfield. Sam Bealer, Kathryn Durki, Jamie Mara and Lis Reade are ready at defense. "The new players come from competitive high school backgrounds and will offer more depth at key positions," Axtell said. All three goalies are new and Axtell is pleased with their talent and team spirit. Ali Mattison, Cynthia Saul and Rebecca Timbers are vying for a starting position on the Saint squad. Helping the rookies out are experienced veterans that include seniors Jenny Heffler at midfield and Jessie Davie on defense. Junior Carolyn Cherry will lead the Saints in the attack position while sophomores Leah Yandow, Megan Clement, Hadley Quish and Kat Smithson (also on the Women's Hockey Team) are returning midfielders. The Saints will start their season against Oswego at Liverpool on March 6 before heading to Florida to face the College of Wooster on March 17 and Franklin and Marshall on March 19. "Wooster has become more competitive over the years and I expect a good strong game," Coach Axtell said. "Franklin and Marshall will be a great test for us. We will use that game as a primer for league play against Hamilton and William Smith when we return home." Axtell's ultimate goal is to win the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament and advance to the NCAA playoffs. "We haven't been their since 1996 and I think it's about time for the Saint's to return," she said.
