2003 Women's Lacrosse Archives SAINTS FALL IN SEMIFINALS TO WASHINGTON COLLEGE May 10 — The St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team’s season ended on Saturday afternoon with a 10-8 loss to Washington College in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament semifinals at Franklin and Marshall. Jenny Heffler led St. Lawrence with three goals and Carolyn Cherry and Leah Yandow each scored twice for the Saints. The Saints held a 5-4 halftime lead, but Casey Sawma tied the game early in the second half for Washington College. The Saints held a one-goal edge after Heffler scored her second of the day with 13:21 remaining, but Washington went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead with 1:19 to play. Heffler scored her third of the day with 1:09 to play to cut the lead to two, but the Saints couldn’t find the net again. Sawma led Washington with four goals, and Jane Studdiford added three goals and two assists. Desiree McKoan made 14 saves for the Saints, who finished the season 11-6. SAINTS EARN TWO-SEED, BYE IN ECAC MID-ATLANTIC TOURNEY May 6 — The St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team earned the No. 2 seed in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament and get a first-round bye into the semifinal round to be hosted by Franklin and Marshall. St. Lawrence, 11-5 on the year, will play the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between No. 6 Washington (12-5) and No. 3 seed Stevens (15-2). Franklin and Marshall earned the No. 1 seed and will play either fifth seed Nazareth (11-5) or No. 4 Drew (13-5). Both semifinal games will be played on Saturday (game times to be announced), and the championship game will be played on Sunday at noon. SAINTS HANG WITH 7th-RANKED HERONS, BUT FINALLY BOW IN May 3 — The St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team hung with seventh-ranked William Smith for as long as they could, but the Herons fire-power finally overcame the Saints in a 10-4 win in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament semifinal round on Saturday. Heidi Hansen and Kat Smithson each scored goals in the first half to tie the game, but William Smith’s Jakie Toner and Gretchen Lasda each scored in the final three minutes of the half to give the Herons a 4-2 halftime lead. William Smith scored the first six goals of the second half, with Amanda Wynn scoring all three of her goals during the run, before the Saints Leah Yandow and Carolyn Cherry could get on the board for the Saints. Jenny Heffler had two assists for the Saints. Desiree McKoan made 13 saves for the Saints, who were outshot 36-18. William Smith also held a 42-25 advantage in ground balls, while the Saints had 11 draw controls to William Smith’s five. St. Lawrence, now 11-5 on the year, will await word on a possible ECAC Mid-Atlantic tournament bid. William Smith at 13-2 will play Skidmore for the UCAA Tournament title. SAINTS CLAIM FOUR SEED WITH 8-6 WIN OVER 11th-RANKED UNION April 26 — The St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team used an 8-2 second half to come from behind to beat Union, ranked 11th nationally in the most recent IWLCA poll, 8-6 on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Saints into fourth in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association standings, and gives the Saints the No. 4 seed in next weekend’s UCAA Tournament. Union held a 4-0 lead at halftime, but the Saints weren’t held scoreless for long in the second half. Carolyn Cherry bounced a free position shot past Union goaltender Rachel Beckman just 31 seconds into the second half. Heidi Hansen won the ensuing draw control, and Hadley Quish found Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly to cut the lead to two. Whitaker-Rahilly blew a free position shot by Beckman into the top right corner to make the score 5-3, and Jenny Heffler scored three consecutive goals to give the Saints their first lead of the game with 11:30 to play. Hansen scored a goal on a restart with Beckman out of the net, and Anne Hawley capped the afternoon with a low shot between Beckman’s legs to give the Saints an 8-5 lead with 6:54 to play. Heffler led the Saints with three goals, and Whitaker-Rahilly, starting for Meghan Clement who was with the golf team at the Northeast Regional at Amherst, tallied two goals and an assist. Cherry had a goal and an assist for the Saints, who will face top seed and host William Smith in the UCAA Tournament semifinals on Friday, May 2nd. Corinne Hennessy scored three goals to lead Union. Desiree McKoan made eight saves for St. Lawrence, including several in the closing minutes to keep Union from mounting a comeback attempt. St. Lawrence is 11-4, and finished the conference schedule 5-3. Union, now 8-5, 4-3, will wrap up the regular season against Clarkson on Sunday. While the Dutchwomen can still tie St. Lawrence in the standings, the Saints hold the tiebreaker (head-to-head results) for entry into the tournament field. SKIDMORE'S SOLID FIRST HALF BEATS SAINTS DESPITE COMEBACK EFFORT April 25 — The 19th-ranked Skidmore women’s lacrosse team built a 7-1 halftime lead and held off a late St. Lawrence University rally to beat the Saints 9-7 in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association women’s lacrosse game on Friday afternoon on North Country Field.
After the teams traded goals, Hansen and Jenny Heffler scored to cut the lead to three, but Skidmore possessed the ball well, running the final minutes off the clock. Cherry did scored with 20 seconds remaining on a free position shot, but it was too little, too late, as the Saints fell behind the Thoroughbreds in the league standings. Ledyard led Skidmore with three goals, and Dutcher and Shea both finished with two goals. Cherry led the Saints, scoring three goals, and Hansen scored twice for the Saints. Skidmore improved to 9-2, 5-2 UCAA, while St. Lawrence fell to 10-4, 4-3. Both teams will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, with the Saints hosting 11th-ranked Union at 5 p.m. and Skidmore traveling to Rochester to face the Yellowjackets at 1 p.m. CHERRY SCORES SIX, SAINTS CRUISE TO 14-10 WIN OVER VASSAR April 19 — Carolyn Cherry scored six goals, including five consecutive goals, to lead the St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team to a 14-10 win over Vassar in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game in Poughkeepsie on Saturday afternoon. Cherry has 55 goals with two games remaining in the regular season. She scored 58 goals last year, and her 55 goals this season is tied for the sixth-highest single-season total in Saints history. Jenny Heffler gave the Saints a 1-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game, and Cherry followed Heffler’s goal with five in a row to give the Saints a 6-0 lead. St. Lawrence eventually led 10-0 when Heffler scored her second of the game with 4:17 left in the first half. Vassar slowly cut the lead down to four, but the Saints held a comfortable lead for the entire second half. Heffler finished with four goals and three assists, and Kelsey Hochstatter scored two goals for the Saints. Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly had a goal and two assists, and Leah Yandow also scored goals for the Saints. Desiree McKoan got the win in goal for the Saints, making eight saves while allowing just two goals in the first half. St. Lawrence improved to 10-3, 4-2 UCAA with the win, while Vassar fell to 4-8, 0-5. The Saints will host Skidmore and tenth-ranked Union next weekend to close out the regular season. CHERRY TIES SCHOOL, SAINTS BEAT RED HAWKS FOR SIXTH IN A ROW April 18 - Carolyn Cherry tied a St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse single-game record with nine goals to lead the Saints to a 17-11 win over Rensselaer in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game in Troy on Friday afternoon. Cherry scored the first five goals for the Saints, and Meghan Clement and Jenny Heffler followed Cherry's offensive outburst with single goals as the Saints started the game on a 7-2 run. Rensselaer cut the lead to just one goal, but Clement and Cherry each scored with less than a minute to play in the first half to give the Saints a 9-6 halftime lead. Clement finished with three goals and two asissts, while Leah Yandow scored two goals and added an assist for the Saints. Heffler and Heidi Hansen each scored a goal and an assist for St. Lawrence, and Kat Smithson also scored a goal. Mary Roy led the Red Hawks with three goals and an assist, while Mary Beth Cooley scored three goals. The Saints improved to 9-3 overall, 3-2 UCAA with the win, the team's sixth in a row. Rensselaer fell to 3-6, 0-3. St. Lawrence will face Vassar on Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie. HEFFLER EARNS ECAC HONORS, JOINS CLEMENT AS TOP April 14 - Jenny Heffler was selected as the ECAC Division III Upstate Player of the Week on Tuesday evening, and was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week earlier on Monday. Meghan Clement was selected as the UCAA Rookie of the Week. Heffler, a junior from Williamsville, NY, was selected as the UCAA Player of the Week. Heffler capped a 3-0 week for the Saints with eight goals and one assist in a 14-6 win over Nazareth. The eight-goal total is just one shy of a St. Lawrence single-game record, held by four different players. Heffler added three goals and one assist in a 15-7 win over Clarkson and three goals and two assists in a 14-9 win over 19th-ranked Rochester. Clement started the week with a goal and two assists against Clarkson, then had a career-high two goals and three assists in the Saints win over Rochester. She added three assists against Nazareth, and is the team's leader in assists with 13. The Saints go on the road to face Rensselaer and Vassar in UCAA games this weekend. SAINTS BEAT POTSDAM FOR FIFTH WIN IN A ROW April 14 - The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team won its fifth consecutive game on Monday, coasting to a 15-9 non-league win over host Potsdam to give the Saints their third win in three days. Reigning UCAA Player of the Week Jenny Heffler scored two goals and added three assists for the Saints, while Susanna Whitaker-Rahilly registered career highs with three goals and four points. UCAA Rookie of the Week Meghan Clement scored two goals and added two assists, Carolyn Cherry had two goals and one assists, and Kelsey Hochstatter also scored twice for the Saints. Jennifer Prevost led Potsdam with five goals. St. Lawrence improved to 8-3 with the win, and Potsdam fell to 2-6. The Saints will go on the road this weekend to face UCAA opponents Rensselaer and Vassar. HEFFLER SCORES EIGHT, SAINTS BEAT NAZ FOR FOURTH IN A ROW
Katie Gauthier set up Heffler's first goal with a bounce pass. With her back to the goal, Heffler took a no-look shot to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Her second goal was even more impressive, as she batted a bounce pass by Meghan Clement out of mid-air past Nazareth goaltender Lindsey Burgess. Heffler capped the first half with a shot to the upper left corner after Gauthier broke a double team and found Heffler alone in front. The goal gave the Saints an 8-2 halftime lead. Heffler got the Saints rolling after halftime, scoring less than two minutes into the second half after gathering a loose ball in front of the Nazareth net. She scored again ten minutes later when Leah Yandow forced a turnover; Clement got the ground ball and found Heffler alone in front of the net.
SAINTS COAST TO WIN OVER CLARKSON AFTER SOLID FIRST HALF April 8 - The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team coasted to a 15-7 win over Clarkson after building a 14-2 halftime lead in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game on North Country Field on a cold, snowy Tuesday afternoon. Carolyn Cherry scored four goals in the first eight minutes of the game as the Saints built an 8-0 lead before the Golden Knights even took a shot. Cherry finished the game with a season high six goals and one assist for seven points, also a season high. She has 29 goals on the season and five assists on the season. Jenny Heffler added three goals and an assist for the Saints, and Katie Gauthier scored two goals and had two assists for the Saints. Cherry, Heffler and Gauthier all recorded all their points in the first half. Meghan Clement scored a goal and added two assists for St. Lawrence, Leah Yandow had a goal and an assist, Jessie Davie scored her first goal of the season, and rookie Meg Getsinger scored her first collegiate goal in the second half. Jessie Judge led Clarkson with three goals, and Lindsey Ellsworth scored two goals for Clarkson. Collen Flynn and Mary Rice also scored goals for the Golden Knights, who fell to 2-4 overall, 0-3 UCAA. St. Lawrence, now 5-3, 1-2 UCAA, will continue the conference schedule against Rochester on Saturday at 3 p.m. on North Country Field. SAINTS TO HOST CLARKSON WITH MODIFIED SCHEDULE April 7 - The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team will host Clarkson on North Country Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for April 26th in Potsdam, but both teams will now face Skidmore and Union that weekend after none of the teams could play in the weekend series. SKIDMORE, UNION GAMES POSTPONED DUE TO WINTER April 4 - The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team's weekend series with Skidmore and Union has been postponed due to the late arrival of spring weather in Canton, NY. The forecast in the North Country for Friday and Saturday calls for snow, sleet, and temperatures in the low 30's, so the two teams will not be travelling for the weekend series with St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The games will be made up, but no date has been determined for those makeup games. The men's lacrosse game with Hamilton is still tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m., but could be postponed as well. MICHAEL'S April 1 - Carolyn Cherry continued her strong sophomore season, scoring five goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 12-4 win over Division II St. Michael's on North Country Field on Tuesday evening. Cherry is the Saints leading scorer with 23 goals and four assists in the Saints first seven games. Jenny Heffler, the Saints second leading scorer, added three goals for the Saints, who improve to 4-3 on the year. Heffler got the Saints out to a quick start, scoring less than two minutes into the game to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Cherry scored her first of the day just under ten minutes into the game, and after Amaris Pawlowski got the Purple Knights back within one goal, Cherry took over. Cherry scored three of the next four goals to give the Saints a 6-1 lead. Heffler added two more with less than four minutes to play in the first half to give St. Lawrence a commanding 8-1 halftime lead. Rookie Leah Yandow had a great all-around game for the Saints, scoring a goal, an assist and adding three draw controls, three caused turnovers and one ground ball. Desiree McKoan had a solid performance in goal for the Saints, making nine saves while allowing just four goals. Pawlowski, Kate Hallisey, Lauren Piekarski and Amanda Lohin scored goals for the Purple Knights, who fall to 1-2 on the season. The Saints will return to Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association action this weekend as Skidmore and Union will travel to the North Country. EIGHT-GOAL RUN PROPELS HAMILTON OVER SAINTS March 29 - Eight different players scored goals, led by Meghan Blair with three, to lead the Hamilton women's lacrosse team to a 12-5 win over St. Lawrence in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game in Clinton, NY, on Saturday afternoon. The Continentals took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Liz Purchia, and after Jenny Heffler tied the game at the with 17:40 to play in the first half, Hamilton went on an 8-0 run spanning over 32 minutes of playing time to take control of the game. Hefffler scored three unanswered goals to bring the Saints back within striking distance and 9-4, but the Continentals scored the next three goals to put the game away. Heffler's four goals bring her season total to 16 goals and 21 points, second behind sophomore attack Carolyn Cherry. Cherry scored the other goal for St. Lawrence, giving her 18 goals and 22 points on the season. The shots were almost even, with Hamilton holding a slim 24-23 edge, but the Saints had a 14-6 lead in draw controls over the Continentals, now 3-2 overall, 2-0 UCAA. The Saints 3-3, 0-2 UCAA, will open a five-game homestand against Division II St. Michael's on Tuesday in a non-league contest on North Country Field. FIFTH-RANKED HERONS TOO MUCH FOR VISITING SAINTS March 28 - Amanda Wynn scored four goals to lead the fifth-ranked William Smith women's lacrosse team to a 15-3 win over St. Lawrence in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams on Friday afternoon. Carolyn Cherry scored her 17th goal of the season to cut the Herons lead to 5-2 with four minutes left in the first half, but William Smith scored the next five goals over the next 14 minutes to take a 10-2 lead. Wynn scored three goals during the run. Megan Shea added two goals and three assists for the Herons, and Gretchen Lasda added two goals and an assist. Jackie Toner and Tracy Genovese each scored two goals for the Herons, now 3-1 overall, 0-1 UCAA. Jenny Heffler led the Saints with two goals. William Smith outshot St. Lawrence 42-16, had a 41-19 edge in ground balls and a 12-7 lead in draw controls. St. Lawrence, now 3-2, 0-1 UCAA, will try to even their conference record against Hamilton on Saturday. SAINTS REBOUND WITH 10-9 WIN OVER WOOSTER March 21 - The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 10-9 win over The College of Wooster on Friday afternoon in Panama City, Fla. Carolyn Cherry led the Saints with three goals, and rookie Leah Yandow added two goals for St. Lawrence, which improves to 3-1 on the season. Jenny Heffler and Meghan Clement each scored a goal and added two assists for the Saints. Mary Risley and Helena Iaquinta each scored three goals to lead Wooster, now 1-1 on the season. Desiree McKoan made 10 saves for St. Lawrence, while a pair of goaltenders split time in the Wooster net, combining for eight saves. The Saints will return to campus this weekend, then go back on the road to open the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association schedule with games against William Smith and Hamilton next weekend. SAINTS BESTED BY SECOND-RANKED AMHERST March 20 - The Amherst women's lacrosse team proved to be too much for St. Lawrence on Wednesday in Panama City as the second ranked Lord Jeffs beat the Saints 19-7. Abby Ouimet led Amherst with four goals and four assists, and Liz Martin and Mary Kate Allen also scored four goals apiece for the Lord Jeffs. Amherst dominated the draw controls, getting 14 to just seven for St. Lawrence. The Lord Jeffs caused 13 St. Lawrence turnovers, while the Saints caused only one turnover. Amherst improved to 2-0 with the win. Carolyn Cherry continued her strong start to the beginning of her sophomore season, scoring five goals and adding one assist. Jenny Heffler had two goals and two assists for the Saints, who fall to 2-1 on the season. Desiree McKoan made 10 saves for St. Lawrence, while a pair of Amherst goaltenders combined for five saves. The Saints will wrap up the Spring Break trip with a game against the College of Wooster on Friday at 11 a.m. CLEMENT SCORES TIMELY GOALS TO STOP HARTWICK COMEBACK, SAINTS GO TO FLORIDA 2-0 March 14 - Carolyn Cherry and Meghan Clement responded to a four goal run by Hartwick by scoring four of the next five goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 10-5 win over Hartwick in Oneonta on Friday afternoon. The Saints held a 5-0 lead after less than eight minutes, but the Hawks chipped away at the lead, cutting the margin to just one goal at halftime. Cherry scored the first goal of the second half, and after Hartwick's Chelsea Block scored her second of the game to again cut the lead to one goal, Clement scored two goals in the next three minutes, and Cherry added an insurance goal with ten minutes to play. Cherry finished with four goals and two assists to bring her season total to eight goals and three assists. Jenny Heffler added three goals and an assist, while Clement added an assist to her two-goal afternoon. The Saints, now 2-0 on the season, will travel to Florida to face Amherst and College of Wooster during Spring Break. CHERRY, HEFFLER LEAD SAINTS TO WIN IN SEASON OPENER March 8 - Carolyn Cherry picked up right where she left off, and Jenny Heffler joined her as a four-goal scorer to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 15-10 win over Oswego on North Country Field on Saturday afternoon. Cherry, who was second on the team in scoring last season, set a record for goals and points as a rookie. She started the 2003 season with as the Saints leading scorer with four goals and an assist in the first game of the season. Jenny Heffler, the Saints third leading scorer in the 2002 season, also scored four goals. St. Lawrence trailed 2-0 in the first two minutes of the game, but Cherry scored two goals and Heffler and Katie Gauthier each scored once to give the Saints a 4-2 lead just over ten minutes into the game. After Katie Carbonaro closed the lead to one goal for Oswego, the Saints scored five unanswered goals to take a 9-3 lead. The Lakers, however, closed to just two goals less than five minutes into the second half. Heffler put Oswego away, however, scoring at the start and end of a 4-0 run to give the Saints a 15-9 lead with less than 17 minutes to play. Gauthier finished with two goals and an assist, while Kat Smithson and Leah Yandow each scored a goal and an assist. Smithson added five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Carbonaro led Oswego with four goals and two assists, and Kathryn Stead added three goals for the Lakers, who start the season 0-1. Maura Meehan scored twice for Oswego. St. Lawrence, now 1-0, will face Hartwick in Oneonta on Friday afternoon. SAINTS WILL OPEN 2003 SEASON AT HOME March 3 - The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team will open their season on Saturday afternoon against Oswego at 1 p.m. on North Country Field. The game, originally scheduled to be played at Oswego, was moved to Canton today because Oswego's field is not ready. The Saints finished the 2002 season with a 14-5 record, doubling their win total from the previous season. The Saints went 5-3 in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association, one of the strongest women's lacrosse conferences in the nation. While the 2003 team will have to learn to adjust without Stacy Turner '02, several players showed a scoring touch last year that might help the Saints continue to move into the national spotlight. Sophomore Carolyn Cherry set the rookie records for goals and points in a season last year, scoring 58 goals and 72 points, and senior Jenny Heffler was third on the team with 30 goals and 39 points. Junior Katie Gauthier was second on the team with 22 assists. Defensively, the Saints return starters Jesse Davie and Emi Seibert, and Anne Hawley, who missed the soccer season with a knee injury, may be able to come back for the spring lacrosse season. After facing Oswego on Saturday, the Saints will travel to Oneonta for another non-league game, facing Hartwick at 1 p.m. next Friday. |
