VASSAR PULLS AWAY IN 2ND HALF FOR WIN April 13: Senior Ali Fantl scored five goals and had three assists to lead Vassar to its sixth straight win, a 16-9 decision over St. Lawrence in a Liberty League women’s lacrosse game in Poughkeepsie Friday afternoon.
Vassar, now 7-2 overall and 3-1 in league play, raced out to a quick 4-1 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game, but the Saints came back with four straight for a 5-4 lead with 10:48 to play in the half. Vassar then scored two goals within 25 seconds to take a 6-5 lead and never trailed again.
While the Saints kept the pressure on Vassar in the first half, the second half was a different story as the Brewer defense denied the Saints in close and goaltender Ariel Nelson shut down the Saint offense after SLU had moved to within three with two goals early in the half. Vassar scored the game’s next four goals for a 14-7 lead and coasted home for the win.
Mary Jane Sweetland led the Saint attack with three goals while Kathryn Durki and Amanda Forbes each had two goals and an assist. Lexi Wisnowski had a goal and two assists and Patty Ball had a goal and an assist for the Saints.
Goaltender Becky Timbers had nine saves for the Saints, now 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League. Nelson finished with 10 for Vassar, which outshot the Saints 35-23.
SLU will play at RPI on Saturday to complete its weekend road trip.
