RPI HOLDS OFF SAINT RALLY IN 10-9 WIN April 14: Rensselaer built a 9-3 first half lead and held off a second half rally by St. Lawrence for a 10-9 Liberty League win in Troy on Saturday.
The Saints, 4-7 overall and 3-5 in the Liberty League, outscored RPI 6-1 in the second half, but couldn’t quite catch up as Carly Mahony’s goal with 3:59 to play in the game put the Red Hawks up 10-8 and while Brittany Misercola scored from Kathryn Durki for the Saints with 2:03 to play, SLU couldn’t find the equalizer as a blocked shot and a turnover in the last two minutes enabled RPI, 4-6, 2-3 to hang on for the win.
RPI jumped out to a 6-1 lead as Sam Fennessey scored four goals in the first half to ignite the fast start. The Saints, down by six at the intermission, scored four goals within the first seven minutes of the second half to make it a 9-7 game, but couldn’t sustain the scoring pace as RPI goalie Emilie Perkins came up with some big saves.
The Saints cut the lead to 9-8 on Amanda Forbes’ goal with 8:29 to go, but could get no closer.
Forbes led the Saints with four goals while Misercola had two with Durki and Julie Wooters adding a goal and an assist each. Mary Jane Sweetland also had a goal for the Saints and Patty Ball added an assist.
Saint goalie Becky Timbers finished with eight saves while Perkins had nine for RPI. The Saints had a 27-25 edge in total shots while RPI had a 12-9 edge in draws.
The Saints will return to action with a makeup game at Geneseo on April 22.
