GENESEO DOWNS SAINTS IN OVERTIME, 8-7 April 22: Goaltender Becky Timbers turned in an outstanding performance and Amanda Forbes scored four goals, but St. Lawrence University’s women’s lacrosse team came up a goal short in an exciting overtime game at Geneseo on Sunday.
The Saints, 4-8, and Blue Knights, 9-2, played dead even on the scoreboard through most of the game as Timbers had a 15-save afternoon. Maggie Benham scored one goal and set up another in the first overtime to give Geneseo a 8-6 lead and while Kathryn Durki scored for he Saints 11 seconds into the second three-minute overtime period, SLU could not come up with the equalizer. Kat Knickerbocker was fouled with two seconds to play in the second overtime and her free position shot went into the net, but not before time had expired.
The two teams traded goals through the first half as Forbes, Julie Wooters and Mary Jane Sweetland scored for the Saints to make it 3-3 at the break. The Saints had a 6-5 lead on Forbes’ fourth of the game with 4:47 to go, but Maggie Morris scored with 55 seconds left to force overtime as the teams were deadlocked at 6-6 after 60 minutes.
Shauna Leonard and Benham scored in the first overtime to give Geneseo a 8-6 lead and while Durki cut it to a goal, the Saints could not tie it again.
SLU had a 13-6 lead in draw controls while Geneseo had a slim 27-25 edge in overall shots. Hannah McKee had six saves for Geneseo.
The Saints will play at St. John Fisher at 5 p.m. Wednesday and conclude their season at Wells on Saturday.
