SAINTS UPEND FISHER IN OVERTIME
April 25: Mary Jane Sweetland scored the game winning goal with 33 seconds to play in the second of two three minute overtime periods to lift the St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team to a 13-12 win at St. John Fisher Wednesday afternoon.
The Saints, now 5-8, upset the Cardinals, 10-4, with a 15-save game from goalie Becky Timbers and a five-goal night from first year midfielder Lexi Wisnowski.
“Becky was obviously a big factor for us, and Lexi was outstanding at both ends of the field,” said Saint coach Jodi Axtell. “ This was a great win for us on the road, and it is something our team can build on for the future. St. John Fisher is a good team and we played them pretty even throughout.”
Fisher led 7-6 at the half with a 16-10 edge in shots, and had 21 shots to 11 for the Saints in the second half, but Timbers had nine of her 15 saves and the Saints outscored the Cardinals 6-5 to force overtime.
Wisnowski tied the game with her fifth of the game on a free position goal with 4:27 to go and Sweetland scored the game winner, her second of the night, with 33 seconds to go in the second three minute overtime period to give the Saints the win.
Fisher jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the game, but the Saints battled back and pulled within 7-6 at the half when Kathryn Durki set up Sweetland with 17 seconds to go in the half.
SLU took a 9-7 lead as Lis Reade and Wisnowski scored three straight to open the second half, but Fisher had a 12-11 lead when Lauren Glavin scored with 7:29 to go in regulation. Wisnowski’s fifth of the game tied it with 4:27 to go in the game on a free position and Sweetland then came up with the game-winner.
